Gruff Rhys is insane. He does all that stuff with electronics as well, playing notes or chords or making sounds with any of a number of instruments, as well as his voice, looping them into some electronic thingamajig and then adding more layers on top so that, at some points he was singing as a backup choir to himself and at others was playing a multitude of instruments at once.<< The first time I saw an example of this type of looping was many years ago on the Late Show in the UK. Eberhard Weber, a great German bass player, was performing alone (I think) and he looped and looped until he was producing some wonderful sounds. Recently one of Barcelona's finest young alto sax players (Llibert Fortuny, anyone wanna hear him?) has had a laptop guy in his band doing electronics, and Llibert now does his own backing tracks and solos over them. The danger in this is it needs to be musically interesting and not just technologically possible. Don't know about Gruff, but the other two were wonderful. Cat continued >>Mike P. in Barcelona, you may be interested to know that most of his songs are sung in Welsh and he has an accent you could cut with a knife.<< the superfurries are from a little, little town called Bethesda which is 5 miles outside my little town, which is called Bangor. The main industry in Bethesda was slate mining and they had a thriving quarry for many years. Now they have little industry and an enormous ugly hole in the mountain. The people from this town are HARD, and almost totally Welsh-speaking, except for students who went to study at Bangor University, fell in love with the scenery and stayed. There is a big rivalry between Bethesda and Bangor, because Bethesda is Welsh- and Bangor is primarily English-speaking, and our soccer and rugby matches with them were always full of 'contact', shall we say. Great guys though, and they loved to sing, especially Sloop John B, in the bars after the games. I used to play soccer for a team called Beaumaris but one summer the circus came to town and when they left our field had been destroyed and the league refused to allow games on it. The players signed for different teams and I went to play for Bethesda for a season or two. The village green in Beaumaris is now ok again but there is no team in Beaumaris now, although there is a 12th century castle which my brother used to work on when he was a stonemason's apprentice. I bought a superfurries CD last summer but don't like it very much (it's in English) but maybe I'll check out the stuff Catherine recommends. Yeah, the Bethesda accent is something else. There is a local chant when the rugby team is playing. 'Pesda boys, Pesda boys, scidiau chwarel a corduroys' (Bethesda boys, Bethesda boys, quarry boots and corduroy trousers). Cheers, or 'hwyl', as we say in Bethesda. meic o fangor ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jun 2006 07:03:01 -0400 (EDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: RE: Imogen Heap njc, Dave Gilmour too and add a layer of Gruff Rhys - --- mike pritchard wrote: > I bought a > superfurries CD last summer but don't like it very > much (it's in English) but maybe I'll check out the > stuff Catherine recommends. I'd suggest you listen to a song or two, or some samples first, because there is a bit of sameness to the songs. It was interesting to be there and watch the guy doing this stuff and listen to his stories, but the music was a bit monotonous after a while (I think). I had been looking for alternate ALL INCLUSIVE places with a performance space to use for the train idea but it proved to be too expensive and exhausting in trying to figure out the logistics to do a Fest sort of gathering on the train with a stop or two. Now that Ashara is planning another Jonifest in the great Northeast the pressure is off for me to find somewhere for us to gather any time soon. I do feel like this would be a great place for us to have a fest/gathering sometime after the 2007 NE Jonifest. I was thinking maybe fall of 2007 or 2008. $100 a day double occupancy is a great deal with premium liquor included. They have a performance space and sound system and we could use at times privately as well as allow other guests to participate in our performances etc. Anyways I thought it would be a nice warm place to go and those damn Brits and Europeans will love the place cause of the great weather and beaches. Les put it in the guitar tabs section (a little confusingly-perhaps a piano music site section could be started...) Now me: I can attest that Dave's transcription of "Down To You" is more than spongeworthy. It can turn you into a full orchestra. Truth be known about transcriptions of Joni's piano work: the best and most faithful of them won't reproduce the melody lines, so they might not qualify as true "PIANO/VOCAL" charts. Her voice is the lead instrument on most of them with the left hand providing bass and rhythm and the right adding color, harmony and contrapuntal textures. Her vocal usually occupies the middle ground between the two, but often flies out to swoop around them and returns. The magic comes when you experience the vocal in your mind's ear while you play. It's just heavenly. I've always wished that the "Ladies Of The Canyon" songbook be revisited for the piano pieces to be recharted. I've spent the equivalent of months trying to get close on "Rainy Night House", "Blue Boy" and "The Arrangement" and I always find myself going major when I should be somewhere else. I don't think the classical influence on her piano was stronger on any other album (although some would argue that FTR was just that...I think the jazz was already filtering through), but it tended to be blissfully, intentionally naive and simple. Simple enough that is to chasten me and remind me of my limitations.
