Call me crazy, but I find myself most frequently running to Ladies of the Canyon and Court and Spark. Song to a Seagull as well, although I admit this is a bit odder choice. The first two are a bit more upbeat but the third had that dreamy, ethereal quality that probably leads many people to work out to DJRD. Oh yea, I run to many of Joni's albums and particularly like the whole DJRD, C&S, Ladies, FTR, DED and especially Hejira. Mingus throws me off. There are just some times that I want a certain consistent rhythm to run to ... to help me get from a crawl to a jog. For my running mix I have DJRD wedged between an Eminem and 50 Cent. The running play list has all genres on it and the themes don't really jive. But the music does. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Jun 2006 10:45:33 -0400 From: Patti Witten Subject: ISO "Just Like Me" mp3/audio file Anyone know where I can hear and download the un-released song, "Just Like Me?" The whole thing is available as an .asx file, I don't know if that's downloadable or anything) I can send an mp3 of "Just Like Me" later today, I'm at work right now adding much value to my client's project. Pity that Joni didn't include this song on her 1st album (and left Pirate of Penance off). It was a ready-made hit and would probably have a hundred-plus covers by now. Bob M, I bet you know :) Thanks, Patti -- http://pattiwitten.com http://myspace.com/pattiwitten Oh, Patti! So... I guess you need a copy of the Let's Sing Out! program (in audio or video) that Doug unearthened a couple of years ago... or the Off The Record compilation that Bob kindly compiled shortly after... Un millo'n de gracias, amigos! I'm sure that someone in the USA will be glad to send you a copy of this :-) Meanwhile, there goes one of my Joni faves (so simple, so dear) Name: 13 - Just Like Me.mp3 Size: 3MB Description: Joni's Just Like Me ("Let's Sing Out" Sudbury, Ontario CBC-TV Broadcast, 10/24/66) The download link is: http://www.sendspace.com/file/52h8tb Many thanks to Moni, too, for providing the link to SendSpace (I did have problems trying to connect to yousendit, me too) Have a Wonderful summer! (njc) I went to see Phil and Friends w/Joan Osbourne on vocals, John Scofield on guitar among others. They sounded awesome as usual but the best part was the third set when Dickey Betts and his son Duane came out and joined them and played Blue Sky, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, and Ramblin' Man. Tremendous energy and just phenomenal playing...I appreciate this music even more now that I'm studying classical music. I actually have my music history class this afternoon. Quite a contrast...Beethoven, Hadyn, Mozart to Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead, Phil Lesh...hmmmm Also notable were Scarlet/ Fire and Franklin's Tower. (njc) glad to hear Dickey Betts is doing well. Was concerned when I heard he was "kicked out" of the Allman Bros Band awhile back. Cool too that his son is named Duane. I didn't know. I've been listening and I have a few comments. This is a live recording and once again I'm so impressed with Joni's delivery and singing. The quality of her voice is so good, so sexy. The song is so breezy, though, I almost wish it were darker and a better fit with the strength of her lower register. (Thank goodness we get a lot more of this effect in later recordings/songs!) Unfortunately the bass player accompanying her sounds like he didn't get enough rehearsal, perhaps totally unfamiliar with her music before a quick run-through prior to the show being broadcast, or he was very nervous? But I'm only going on what I hear so I'm assuming a lot. Including assuming he was a "he." As for the quality of the song, eh, I'm not all that impressed. But I hear a distinct similarity to Cactus Tree in this song, both in chord progression and lyric, and I wonder if that is why it was not included on the first LP. Still, a fun listen. If she was down to a choice between Cactus Tree & Just Like Me, I'm glad she went with CT. Still, I love this use of the phrase to bring it to closure: "There are no strings to hold him I guess you could call him so free Yes, he's free to be lonely and empty And lost just like me" I think it's a great song, and I love the contrast between the upbeat "Chelsea Morning" sound of it with the darker lyric.
