Tenth World, although one of my least fave Joni tracks, is the best one to run to." Personally, I find a lot of Joni's music good to run to. Call me crazy, but I find myself most frequently running to Ladies of the Canyon and Court and Spark. Song to a Seagull as well, although I admit this is a bit odder choice. The first two are a bit more upbeat but the third had that dreamy, ethereal quality that probably leads many people to work out to DJRD. PS - Brian, I got a computer but now it won't read the CD's! I'll keep trying . . . . . . I'm so anxious to become a truly well-versed joni fan. - - Kira ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Jun 2006 10:41:28 EDT From: StDoherty@aol.com Subject: Re: onlyJMDL Digest V2006 #181 In a message dated 06/25/2006 3:10:03 A.M. Also, I've also found that DJRD is the best Joni song to listen to when in an altered state of consciousness. At least that was the case back in the mists of time, when I still had occasion to alter my consciousness. Treadmill mix - I like that. I guess that's what I have. In France They Kiss on Main Street and Shiny Toys are also on mine. I'm not crazy about Shiny Toys - but it is good for running. As far as the altered consciousness - I think it's hearing the split tongue spirit that moves one! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Jun 2006 12:04:36 EDT From: Allmanfan54@aol.com Subject: RE: Trying to get a hold of Les. Speaking of brilliant, and just to keep the JMDL "fair & balanced" just like Fox 'news', here's a hilarious offer for "Folk Songs of the Far Right": http://folksongsofthefarrightwing.cf.huffingtonpost.com/ Enjoy - I did. I love the way Otis and Marlena starts to fade out with Joni singing those dream like, eerie, high vocalizations in the background, like we're all drifting off into Marlena's 'dream she has awake'. Then the drums and chanting come up, taking us out of Miami out of the US and into points beyond. The cut ends abruptly with that final drum phrase, there is a miniscule pause and then Joni's vocal starts into the samba-infused lead vocal of Dreamland. We have arrived in the tropical paradise of Dreamland (but of course, as is typical with Joni, Paradise has another side to it.) I think of DJRD as 3 mini-suites and one mini-concerto (Paprika Plains). The vinyl had 4 sides and each was a self-contained song cycle with common themes running through the lyrics of each song in each cycle. The Tenth World fits into side 3 and serves a purpose in the flow of the 3 cuts on that side. The album as a whole seemed disparate to me for a long time, but in recent years I have begun to see how it might all fit together into a nicely integrated whole. My appreciation of DJRD has definitely grown over time.
