(NJC) Hi JMDLers, I thought I would forward this to you, in case any of you are in NYC soon, or know people who may be interested in the events detailed below... :-) Kay - ---------------------------- Original Message ---------------------------- Happy Midsummer, Everyone -- school's out for the summer! (I'm afraid this time of year will always evoke painful memories of Alice Cooper and acid-wash jeans for me...) SO ANYWAY, I have a bunch of music news for you. Firstly, I have a show at CB's GALLERY next Wednesday night: Kay Ashley (opening for Sharon Goldman) Wednesday, June 28th, 2006 7:00 pm CB's Gallery 313 Bowery, NYC $5 cover charge This show will be an Elizabeth Records extravaganza, as the evening's main attraction will be Sharon's CD release party, beginning at 8:00 pm. As a fellow Elizabeth Records artist, it will be my job to play the honorary role of opening act scapegoat and make a real fool of myself! How could I avoid that with a bag full of yellow plastic kaYzoos, anyway, I hear a very small number of you ask? No, seriously, folks, this will be a really great evening of music with much harmonizing, gesticulation and Bacchic revelry. ALSO, Sharon and I are members of a brand new women's performing songwriter collective called MAGGIE'S MUSIC SALON. Check out our new MySpace site: www.myspace.com/maggiesmusicsalon I hope to see you at CB's on the 28th! :-) Kay ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ www.kayashley.com www.myspace.com/kayashley ~ ALSO IN THE NEWS ~ My Hindustani classical voice teacher Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan is in town, hot off the plane from Kolkata, and he will be giving 2 concerts in the very near future ~ one this Sunday morning at 11 am, and the second one 2 weeks from now. You should really make every attempt to hear at least one of these concerts. He is a world-class master vocalist of the Hindustani Kirana Gharana (or, Kirana lineage) tradition, and it's a rare opportunity to hear pure, undiluted raga music from a rarified musical culture. If you had the chance to hear Ravi Shankar in a room that only holds about 50 people, you would go, right? OK, so get yourselves down to ARCH at 66 West 39th Street (3rd floor)! Just do it!! Here is a summary of all upcoming Indian Classical events being presented by The American Academy of Indian Classical Music (AAICM) and The ARCH Worldwide. ALL EVENTS WILL TAKE PLACE AT ARCH: 66 West 39th Street, 3rd Floor New York, NY ~ Sunday, June 25, 11:00 AM ~ Vocal Concert by Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan ~ Friday, June 30, 7:00 PM ~ Lecture by Pandit Vijay Kichlu, with demonstrations by Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan and Vidushi Subhra Guha ~ Saturday, July 8, 9:00 PM ~ Vocal Concert by Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan ~ Sunday, July 9, 7:00 PM ~ Sitar Concert by Pandit Nayan Ghosh Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan will honor us with two concerts in the coming fortnight. The first concert will be Sunday, June 25 at 11:00 AM and will feature Morning and Early Afternoon Ragas. Nitin Mitta will provide tabla accompaniment. The second concert will be Saturday, July 8, at 9:00 PM, and will feature Night Ragas. Samir Chaterjee will play tabla. Admission to the concerts is $20 apiece. On Friday, June 30th, 7:00 PM, Pandit Vijay Kichlu (former director of the prestigious ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata) will present a lecture/demonstration entitled "Unfolding the Mysteries of Raga." Musical illustrations will be provided by master vocalists Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan and Vidushi Subhra Guha. Pandit Kichlu will choose a group of ragas that are based on similar or even identical scales and will show how a performer is nonetheless able to use them to create very different moods. As we will see, a raga is far more than a mere collection of notes; each one gives us a view onto an emotional landscape which would otherwise remain an undiscovered territory. Panditji's lectures are always lively and inspiring, and help us to more fully enjoy and appreciate this magical art form. The musical illustrations are sure to be a treat as well. Admission will be free for Academy members, $10 for students of Academy instructors (Mashkoor Ali Khan, Subhra Guha, Sabina Islam and Michael Harrison), and $20 for the general public. THIS IS A RARE AND WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY TO GAIN A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC. On Sunday, July 9th at 7:00 PM, we will present Pandit Nayan Ghosh on Sitar, accompanied by Nitin Mitta on tabla. Pandit Ghosh is an oustanding sitar player who is also one of India's finest tabla players. Admission will be $20, free for AAICM members. Though y'all might get a kick out of this "forward" I received. "Bring us round a bottle (of Molson or Labatt Blue) and we'll have some laughs..." ********************** News From the "Other" Border (Author unknown) The flood of American liberals sneaking across the border into Canada has intensified in the past week, sparking calls for increased patrols to stop the illegal immigration. The unflinching arrogance of the Bush Administration is prompting the exodus among liberal citizens who fear they'll soon be required to hunt, pray, and agree with Bill O'Reilly. Canadian border farmers say it's not uncommon to see dozens of sociology professors, animal-rights activists and Unitarians crossing their fields at night. "I went out to milk the cows the other day, and there was a Hollywood producer huddled in the barn," said Manitoba farmer Red Greenfield, whose acreage borders North Dakota. The producer was cold, exhausted and hungry. "He asked me if I could spare a latte and some free-range chicken. When I said I didn't have any, he left. Didn't even get a chance to show him my screenplay." In an effort to stop the illegal aliens, Greenfield erected higher fences, but the liberals scaled them. So he tried installing speakers that blare Rush Limbaugh across the fields. "Not real effective," he said. "The liberals still got through, and Rush annoyed the cows so much they wouldn't give milk" Officials are particularly concerned about smugglers who meet liberals near the Canadian border, pack them into Volvo station wagons, drive them across the border and leave them to fend for themselves. "A lot of these people are not prepared for rugged conditions," an Ontario border patrolman said. "I found one carload without a drop of drinking water. They did have a pleasant little Napa Valley cabernet, though." When liberals are caught, they're sent back across the border, often wailing loudly that they fear retribution from conservatives. Rumors have been circulating about the Bush administration establishing re-education camps in which liberals will be forced to drink domestic beer and watch NASCAR. Liberals have turned to sometimes-ingenious ways of crossing the border. Some have taken to posing as senior citizens on bus trips to buy cheap Canadian prescription drugs. After catching a half-dozen young vegans disguised in powdered wigs, Canadian immigration authorities began stopping buses and quizzing the supposed senior-citizen passengers. "If they can't identify the accordion player on The Lawrence Welk Show, we get suspicious about their age," an official said. Canadian citizens have complained that the illegal immigrants are creating an organic-broccoli shortage and renting all the good Susan Sarandon movies. "I feel sorry for American liberals, but the Canadian economy just can't support them," an Ottawa resident said. "How many art-history majors does one country need?" In an effort to ease tensions between the United States and Canada, Vice President Dick Cheney met with the Canadian ambassador and pledged that the administration would take steps to reassure liberals, a source close to Cheney said. "We're going to have some Peter, Paul & Mary concerts. And we might put some endangered species on postage stamps. The president is determined to reach out." ************************ O Canada! Rufus at Carnegie Hall was utterly amazing. The two evenings were surreal and fabulous, the gayest event ever. Night #1 It was beyond amazing. We were seated front row center just exactly in front of, and below him. When he sang "San Francisco", he got on his knees right in front of us, ala Al Jolson, and I was pretty sure I had died and gone to heaven. Bowie, as in David, was seated 2 rows and directly behind us. I shook John Waters hand before we went inside. They're BIG. Jimmy Fallon from Saturday Night Live who is Rufus' friend, walked up to me before the show (thinking he knew me?) and kissed me on the cheeks! and told me 'you look fabulous!'. I nearly wet myself. David Byrne of Talking Heads, Krystie Johnson, and Queer Eye's Carson Kressley sitting just behind us. Then we lost track of the myriad celebs, and the show was pandemonium. Intermission was pandemonium. I can't begin to describe it. Did you see the NYTimes review too? Stephen Holden was less than thrilled with Rufus' voice, but he's not Judy, nor was he trying to be. Stephen Holden didn't attend night #2, which was better to the point of HE NEVER SOUNDED BETTER! And let's face it, Martha. his sister blew us away with "Stormy Weather". We were sort of in shock, like 'did all that really happen?" We went again night #2, sat 3rd row, on the right Rufus did the entire Judy set with a 40 piece orchestra. Stephen Oremus (Music Director for "Avenue Q" and "Wicked") conducted, and those two were so cute to see interact! They kissed each other on the lips the 2nd night at the end/bows: adorable. Sam Mendes (Tony for "Cabaret", Oscar for "American Beauty", multiple Oliviers) directed the show and the DVD, which, yes, will be forthcoming, along with a CD produced by Phil Ramone. Lorna Luft came out for the 2nd to last song, and did with Rufus, 'After You've Gone' and brought "Judy" into the house. Kate McGarrigle played piano for Rufus during "Over The Rainbow". Their banter both nights was hilarious, as usual. Martha was nothing short of stunning. There are really good photos and multiple reviews on the MessageBoard of Rufus' official site from both nights ( night #1 hereand night #2 here) and even . . . . there were little videos that had surfaced, of "Come Rain of Come Shine" and "San Francisco" but they were removed because of copyright issues, too bad I guess... The 2nd night Rufus brought Martha on for an encore, and he sat on a stool and watched, while Kate played piano for her and she sang Gerswhin's "Someone To Watch Over Me": gorgeous. It was all so epic and amazing and emotional: Rufus as Rufus, paying tribute to, and accomplishing the olympian feat of singing that concert of songs and arrangements. The 2nd night, after Martha's encore, and his 'Get Happy" (which wasn't in the original concert, but he felt like he should sing it), he reprised "San Francisco" AGAIN! as the closer. Mind-boggling performance, and he slid across the stage on his knees at one point during it. After the audience screamed him off the stage, he waved 'goodbye', and wished us all "Happy Gay Pride!". There are numerous mostly raves and all positive reviews around. Get serious? This Last Waltzlike doc is almost funereal, full of reverent banalities spliced between overly folksy takes on melancholic Leonard Cohen bombshells. At the film's core is the "Came So Far for Beauty" Cohen tribute concert held last year in Sydney, for which producer Hal Willner organized a lineup of musicians to interpret Cohen's songs. Always loving but at times soporific, these renditions range from a dull Beth Orton version of "Sisters of Mercy" to an unironically anthemic "Anthem" by Julie Christensen and Perla Batalla.
