I can't answer your Eagles question but do know that he got hooked up with all these guys because he was living on Joni's street in Laurel Canyon when he first came out to L.A. All these guys (or most of them) were in the neighborhood at the time. I recall reading something (I think from Henry Diltz or someone who lived nearby) about the sounds of his gorgeous singing and playing wafting up the canyon and everyone within earshot immediately wanted to know where the music was coming from. He went from unknown to everyone wanting to jam with him almost overnight. He also was "discovered" when he was an unknown by Irving Azoff who also produced the Eagles in the beginning. In sad news, have you heard that Dan has been suffering from advanced stages of cancer the past few years? :-( Kakki Lama wrote about one of Dan Fogelberg's finest: I remembered that SOUVENIERS was produced by Joe Walsh. Joe Lala, Russ Kunkel, and Graham Nash. Irv Azoff is credited with "direction". The copyright says 1974 so it surprised me that Walsh (who didn't join the Eagles for a while yet) already knew Randy Meisner, Don Henley, and Glenn Frey well enough to get them on backing vocals. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Jun 2006 05:26:46 -0400 From: Gary Z Subject: Re: Fogelberg (njc) Yes, Kakki, this is very sad news about Dan. I'm hopeful that he will beat this disease. He has a very nice site at danfogelberg.com that is worth checking out. And as many of us know, Dan cites Joni as one of his favorites, and she appears on his recording "The Innocent Age." . I remember when I travelled by car cross country to Los Angeles in 2002 and as I crossed the border into California, I had one of my compilation cassettes playing, and on came "Run For the Roses." I remember the tears welling up in my eyes as the song played and I drew closer to what I had hoped would be my own "run for the roses." It's one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard and to this day, I still can't listen to the song without being emotionally moved to tears. Let's send good thoughts Dan's way that he makes it through his tough times. Best regards, Gary Z. Detroit kbhla@sbcglobal.net wrote: > Ah, another who takes my breath away.... This is not the 'Living With War' material, but largely 'Prairie Wind' and some older writing. I confess to not having kept up with Neil all that well (except having read 'Shakey') and so a good deal of this material fell on virgin ears. I like it. It's really nicely melodic rock. EmmyLou (on backups) has to be the grandest lady in all of music. Neil really blew my mind when he ended the film with a solo rendition of 'The Old Laughing Lady' under the credits. Dear Patricia, On Friday, June 16, 256 Representatives approved House Resolution 861, "Declaring that the United States will prevail in the Global War on Terror, the struggle to protect freedom from the terrorist adversary." What does this mean to us? The Resolution misleads Americans by suggesting a link between the war in Iraq and the war on terror. In the Resolution, the House of Representatives "declares that it is not in the national security interest of the United States to set an arbitrary date for the withdrawal or redeployment of U.S. Armed Forces from Iraq", and that "the U.S. is committed to the completion of the mission to create a sovereign, free, secure and united Iraq." This Resolution is at odds with everything Another Mother for Peace stands for. We are an association dedicated to eliminating the use of war as a means of solving disputes among nations, people, and ideologies. Let's tell our elected Representatives what we think about their Resolution! Did anyone read Molly Ivins this week? She wrote: I realize [Bush's five-hour Iraq] trip was arranged to try to take advantage of the killing of Zarqawi, for Bush to "get a bounce out of it," as they say back in Washington politics. But I'm just not sure there's much bounce left in Iraq. It's not good enough anymore to turn a corner or see a light at the end of the tunnel -- too many corners, too many lights later. [...] The trouble with Iraq is what keeps happening there. We haven't rebuilt the place---in fact, it keeps getting worse in terms of basic services. You have to admit, leaving a place worse off than Saddam Hussein kept it is not a bragging point. Number of people killed keeps going up, signs of militias out of control, sectarian violence, spreading anarchy...not good. Years ago, Mrs. T. Cullen Davis, of tacky Texas murder trial fame, said as her husband tried to grab a fabulous necklace he gave her, "This ain't no takesie-backsie." (You may now take a deep breath while considering the depth of that comment.) I feel that Iraq is also a "no takesie-backsie." It is a putrid human, social and political disaster, and getting worse, not better. The people who got us into this should not be forgiven---they should not even get a "bounce" from it. There is only one thing I want from them---to get us and our Army out of there, instead of cavalierly announcing that will be left to "future presidents." - ------------ It must end. I haven't been up in Topsfield since the lovely JoniFest of 2001 that Ashara hosted and I'm looking forward to singing a slew of my new tunes for y'all (plus a healthy smattering of Joni's for sure...) Ashara tells me it's filling up and only 8 or so slots are left, so if you're up for it shoot her an email quick at AsharaJM @ aol.com for a reservation and directions. Hope to see ya! But before that I haven't anything since Harvest, so that's what I was kind of apologizing about. I saw him only with CSNY (Four Way Street Tour) in Boston 1970 (I think. It was a debut of 'Ohio' and 'Cost of Freedom' so 1970 sounds right.) Anyway that was an electric then acoustic show, and when they took a break to change, Neil stayed onstage and did and absolutely killer solo set (his idea of a 'break'.) This material did not make the LP, it's on the CD. It's REALLY good. As is 'Shakey'. What's got into me? I don't know. But I have a jones to tab a song but didn't want to reinvent the wheel: Does anybody have basic chords or a tab for Marvin's "Trouble Man" which Joni so exquisitely covered on her last tours? If I don't hear from anyone I'm going to have to try it myself (maybe with my brother Jimmy's help). I'm also thinking (i'm always thinking -- unfortunately that's as far as I get), but anyway, I've been thinking about the idea of a guitar site podcast. Excluding any hairy copyright issues, I think it might be fun. I first have to learn how to podcast. Stay tuned ... I might get there in a decade or so. A friend of mine asked me to describe our favorite musician for a book she is writing so I wrote this: Joni Mitchell walks on to the stage like it's her living room. When she picks up the acoustic guitar and starts to play it almost sounds like someone has just thrown a basket of bells down a carpeted flight of stairs. Her lyrics command you to listen. As the story plays out it is perfectly balanced, in meter, rhyme and action, and as she finishes the opus her left hand floats off the strings and into the air like a dove flying after the last notes. As you can tell, I really like her. Then my friend wrote me back and said, that's great Sue, but I meant Patti Witten!!!!!!! :-) sorry Patti, you are certainly a very very close second!!! To my Father's Day post. I was reminiscing and dwelling on my Detroit-Dallas via Nashville trip with my dad - had to be around 1980/81 or so, he was on his way to California for the NAAM Show (He was a rep for Roland back then) and decided to drive with me to Dallas and fly the rest of the way to L.A. from there. As I wrote in my earlier post we stopped to visit with one of Dad's friends, Bucky Barrett and spent a lovely evening having dinner and drinks. I began to wonder what might have become of Bucky so I looked him up on the internet (as you do) and discovered some things. He was a guitar player with Neil Young in the early 1990's for a time and played on "Comes A Time" (http://music.barnesandnoble.com/search/product.asp?z=y&EAN=75992723527&ITM=2) Russ Kunkel and Nicolette Larson were also both credited on that release. Subsequently he is on Neil's "Greatest Hits" (http://music.barnesandnoble.com/search/product.asp?z=y&EAN=93624893523&ITM=1) because of the time he spent with him. I found this particularly interesting because of the recent Nicolette Larson discussions. Wow... an almost brush with fame! Speaking of Russ Kunkel, I just wanted to mention briefly that Kunkel, Doerge, Sklar and Kortchmar were probably the most sought-after studio musicians of their day. They were also doing their own thing and went by the name of "The Section". In 1972 they put out an self-titled L.P. that I bought because I'd seen them tour as Jackson Browne's stage band and I loved them, I had also heard Kunkel drumming on Joni's Ladies of the Canyon, Blue and For the Roses (there may be more but those are the releases that come readily to mind). The Section would occasionally announce impromptu performances of their own and played with a ton of artists such as James Taylor, CSN&Y. Russ produced Jimmy Buffet's 2003 release "Meet Me in Margeritaville" while Lee Sklar shared bass credits with Meshell Ndegeocello on Santana's 2002 release "Shaman". It goes to show that being a "session" musician can bring longevity to one's career, certainly more than being a one-hit-wonder. It's a hell of a spider-web when we put all these musicians together. (I'd love to see it done as an art piece with pins and different coloured string for each artist connecting to each other.) Most of them were in Crosby/Nash's touring band, too. Odd aside- I worked for Doerge's brother (rhymes with 'derby') briefly, who wholesaled motorcycle oil. ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2006 #233 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe -------
