Well, what I'm about to write probably isn't news to you, either, but here goes. Those of us on the Warren Zevon Bulletin Board (at warrenzevon.com, for those who are interested) have long asked the question, "Which version of PPPM came first: Linda Rondstadt's, or the one on _Warren Zevon_?" I think the consensus we've come to, with some evidence backing us up, is that the version Ronstadt sang may well have been the original, and that the few lines that Warren sang on his self-titled release that differed from that version were ad-libbed in the studio. But you're right, if you're implying that, however those lines came about, they would have been a stretch for Linda! Warren himself usually sang the "Ronstadt" version over the years in live shows, although he occasionally tinkered with those lines to include the location of the show and other details, much as he did with the lines about Van Owen's demise in "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner," or with the city name in "Werewolves." However, the one set of tours in which he consistently sang the _Warren Zevon_ version of "PPPM" were those preceding and during the release of _Life'll Kill Ya_ (circa 1999-2000). In those shows, he'd sing "PPPM" with the lines in question restored, and then introduce a new song from LKY called "Hostage-O," which was about---ahem---bondage, physical and otherwise, among other things. In a few shows, he did so by saying, "I recently decided to write a sequel to "Poor, Poor Pitiful Me." (beat.) It shows that I haven't evolved, musically or morally, in 30 years." Of course, that was patently untrue, as all his appreciative fans well knew, RIP, Warren. You are still very much missed. Mary, who is happy to bring Zevon trivia to the Joni list, and Joni trivia--IS there such a thing??--to the Zevon board! I guess that makes me. . . bi-listual. ;-) ----- Original Message ----- From: Bob.Muller@fluor.com To: blckcrow@chorus.net Cc: anima_rising@yahoo.ca ; blckcrow@chorus.net ; joni@smoe.org Sent: Thursday, June 15, 2006 9:16 AM Subject: Re: NJC RE: The "Joni Standard" now Ronstadt Well hey there Mary - great to hear from you again. I liked Linda's version of PPPM OK, like I said, but hers was the first one I heard, and when I did get into Warren and bought the self-titled LP that his version was on, the most obvious thing was the verse that he sang (to hilarious effect) that Linda omitted. I know this is not news to you but it's a significant item to those who haven't heard it. The verse: "I met a girl at the Rainbow Bar She asked me if I'd beat her She took me back to the Hyatt House I don't want to talk about it"(spoken) I howled the first time I heard it, and never quite enjoyed Linda's as much for the ommission. I'm sure that Warren was delighted with the "royalty pennies" that Linda's covers provided him, just as Joni has been for hers. Not sure if the family celebrates the holiday, but if they do (and even if they don't), I hope Mr. Anderson had a lovely day. As for me, Father's Day has been a rather odd holiday for many years, since my own father has been gone now for nearly 25, and my last grandfather, for about 15 (yep: my dad died far too young, and one of my grandfathers lived to the ripe old age of 92!). But one of the nice things about the intervening years is that I've gotten to celebrate the fatherhood of family members in my own generation. To them, to all the fathers on the JMDL, and to all men who have acted in the role of a father or trusted role model for a child, or young adult: thank you. And, one day late, in the words of one of Joni's associates from back in the day, "long may you run." According to the Guiness Book of Worl Records: Most Recorded Song The most recorded song is "Yesterday" written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon. From 1965 to January 1, 1986 some 1,600 versions of the song were made. The song was first recorded in June 1965 and released that August on the Help! album. It has been covered by artists such Elvis Presley, Boyz II Men, Frank Sinatra, James Brown, and Gladys Knight. The song reportedly came to McCartney in a dream. He woke up, went to the piano, turned on the tape recorder, and played the song. He then spent the next few weeks trying to figure out whether he'd heard the song before or just made it up in his sleep! bluejr@adelphia.net wrote: > I thought I'd heard that Never My Love, written by Don and Dick Addrisi > and > made most famous by The Association, was THE most recorded song, but I may > be mistaken. > JR in NH > > > Original Message: > ----------------- > From: Michael Paz michael@thepazgroup.com > Date: Sun, 18 Jun 2006 15:54:02 -0500 > To: guitarzan@hughes.net, loveuconn@hotmail.com, joni@smoe.org > Subject: Re: Most covered songwriters > > > I am sure Yesterday has to be WAY up there. When he hooked up with the band Tool, he played some of his stuff for their singer Maynard James Keenan who said he'd sing if a band ever materialized. It did and he sang even though Billy had originally wanted a female to sing lead. The results are spectacular, in my opinion. If you like harder edged rock (with a twist) you may enjoy it too. Once on the page, there is a chat feature too so we could schedule regular chats for those interested. Click on the link in the upper left to join Frappr then add yourself to the map and enter the chatroom. If no one is interested, let me know that too so I can just delete it. There's always something for the adults. My kids are already out of school, since they're in high school. Matthew wrote his last exam today. Sarah is lazing about the house when she's supposed to be looking for a job. They are already at one another's throats. I've already had a phone call from Matthew complaining that Sarah is being a be-atch. She will be nice to him if she decides that she wants him to go out and get some junk food, because god forbid she should venture out on the street for that. It's days like these, I thank the powers-that-be that I've got a full-time job, and it looks like maybe a little overtime is in order, lasting until, oh, the day after Labour Day! As for accessing your personal mail from your workplace, you may just carry a program with you on an external disk/drive (if you can get a chance to plug it in). A very useful website for finding stuff that fits on a USB stick is http://portableapps.com There you can find portable versions of Thunderbird and Firefox as well as other goodies (that won't need to be installed on the computer but run anyway from the USB drive). If you still have a computer with a floppy drive, you may like this: http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/downloads321/popcorn.zip It's a very small mail client that can handle POP3 accounts. Of course, that will fit on a stick, too. It's very handy because it's really small and fast. moni ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Jun 2006 13:40:47 -0400 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: NJC Re: Frappr JMDL Map I think it's a great idea, Cassy - thanks for doing it. The old JMDL site used to have a chatroom, and it was lots of fun. It fell into disuse because it's tricky unless you have a pre-planned chat time. You are so right that remembering funny stories like this one keeps their memories alive in our hearts! This was so touching and cute! It made me smile and remember...thank you Cassy! Love, Sherelle Cassy wrote: Father's Day! To those who are father's I wish you a day filled with the love of your families and no burns while you tend the grill. (Why is it that the fathers tend to grill on their special day?) To those who have fathers they can reach out and touch in some way... don't forget to phone and thank the man who helped raise you. Tell him how much you love him and appreciate the sacrifices he made to give you a "better" life. The hard part is to those who have lost their fathers. Some will be experiencing their first father's day without the man they have loved all their lives. I feel a special bond with those JMDLers. I lost my own father a few years ago and though I miss him every day, there are some days I miss him more than others; today being one of those days. I'd like to share a little story if you'll bear with me. For father's day one year, my siblings and I pitched our money together to buy daddy an electric garage door opener, he was fastidious with his Lincoln Town Car and he really wanted one so we decided that though we didn't usually spend that kind of money on a gift he deserved, for once, to get something he really wanted. We presented him with his gift and he was delighted. He decided that he would have someone come and install it for him rather than screw it up so that week, along came the installers. Oops... the garage door he had was too old-fashioned to work with electric openers so he elected to spring for a new door to go along with the opener. Took a couple of days to get the door installed with opener and he was delighted to pull his car into the garage and click the button. Down came the door... only to land on the bumper of his car and go right back up again! He got back into his car and nosed it right up against the back wall of the garage and came out to close the door again. Oops... his car was too long to allow the garage door to close, it came down on the bumper again and went right back up. Dad paced the driveway a few times muttering something we couldn't quite get but something to do with "bloody presents...". He ended up having to knock the back of the garage out and extend it several feet to accommodate his Lincoln AND be able to close the door too. He said "That's the single most bloody expensive gift anyone ever gave me... thanks a lot!" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Jun 2006 15:15:50 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: Re: Frappr JMDL Map Cassy - that link's not working for me...is it me, maybe I ain't "holding my mouth right" as we say down south? As time goes on, I realize what an influence my father had on me, and so many of the things I love, he was a big part of introducing me to. (ack bad sentence, sorry!)...anyway, i guess i'm moved by your words, because after so many years, there's still an ache, a longing for him, especially with all that i need to say to him, in my life, today. i am so happy & i hope he knows. it is said that he does indeed know. as for my brother dave, who passed almost three years ago, (daunting that), i miss him a lot , every day really. his bday was not so long ago, as well as father's day..i know how his daughter is doing, as well as other family members...and it's an alteration of the soul that is life long. i try to accept, but there it is. i'm glad for his presence in my life, too. the dad thing, it's a tricky one, and sometimes takes years to realize the treasure . adding on to something here...I think it's nice when someone lets us know that they need to take a little break or leave the list. connections made are a wondrous thing here...and i know my precious friends remain, just so. a bit of a rambling off course, however, one more thing... if you havent done so, do go and see The Sea Inside...a gorgeous film.....no words to express in this moment, just that it helped me to reconcile some things that are going on in my mind with respect to death. i am looking forward to my work at the wpg folk festival..again, if anyone is interested, pls check out the website. not online so much these days, but wanted to share a few bits ... mags. let us go then you and i ~t.s.eliot~ I'll keep on moving Things are bound to be improving these days These days- These days I sit on corner stones And count the time in quarter tones to ten, my friend Don't confront me with my failures I had not forgotten them ~jackson browne~ Next-gen email? He's 74 and I'd love to have him around for another 20. We have lunch every other Thursday and talk about music, our lives, and badass liberal politics. (He was a Government employee/ Navy Veteran) and is madder about our country's current direction than me. Some people never get to meet their heroes; I had the privilege of growing up with mine. I did see The Sea Inside this year (thanks to Netflix) and thought it was wonderful. It always strikes me as funny that those who believe in a life beyond the one we know seem to be the ones that cling to life the hardest. If you truly believe in heaven, why all the fear? I don't understand. My Mom believed in an afterlife and didn't fight her death, she welcomed it and spoke happily of finally having her spirit re-united with her loved ones that died before her.
