I think Bonnie also beat the original with Randy Newman's "Guilty." Getting back to Joni, I cannot think of any other artist whose cover beats Joni's effort. Bonnie's "TSatM" is always mentioned in this context, and I agree -- but that's it, as far as I can see. On the other hand, I can think of many people who do songs that Joni has covered -- such as "Summertime," "Why Do Fools Fall in Love," "You've Changed," and others -- much better. That said, and putting my love and admiration for Bonnie aside to try to get to the heart of this -- for me, anyway -- I think Bonnie's voice, or her *character*, just sounds more "real" and honest in her delivery. When Bonnie sings "I feel like I've been working overtime," I believe it on a deeper level than when Joni sings the same words. Well, again, it's all very subjective, but I agree with you. For these older jazz standards Joni is far from my favorite singer; I generally think she has a voice that is primarily suited to her own compositions. That said, Marvin Gaye works for her, I think. The live versions of "Trouble Man" in '98 and "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" in '83 are both, if not as good as Gaye's, at least very good. Anyway, my point is that I DID NOT INCLUDE "I Will Always Love You" on the tape...back then I was more in tune with the uptempo vibe of "Heat Wave", "Love Is A Rose", "That'll Be The Day", etc. I bought Prisoner in Disguise on CD a couple of years back, and re-discovered how awesome Linda's cover of Dolly's song was. It literally stopped me in my tracks, luckily I was in a parking lot and not on the interstate. Funny. I ran into JD Souther at an eyeglasses store on Sunset once. It was around the late 80s and I gushed about his on-camera work on "thirtysomething." I also told him how much I admired his song "Prisoner In Disguise" and we co-miserated about the damage done to "I Will Always Love You" by the then current Houston hit version. He, knowing a bit more than me about the economics of songwriting didn't seem to think that Dolly was as upset as we were. Friendly chap, studly too. Before all this discussion of JD started I'd pulled out my vinyl PID to make a mix disc of female rock 'n roll belt vocals for my daughter who is preparing for a teen company production of "Grease." Ronstadt sure applies there...see "Tell Him" on "Get Closer" or "I Knew You When" and the title track on "Living in the USA."
