Anyway, my point is that I DID NOT INCLUDE "I Will Always Love You" on the tape...back then I was more in tune with the uptempo vibe of "Heat Wave", "Love Is A Rose", "That'll Be The Day", etc. I bought Prisoner in Disguise on CD a couple of years back, and re-discovered how awesome Linda's cover of Dolly's song was. It literally stopped me in my tracks, luckily I was in a parking lot and not on the interstate. A footnote - I would have picked up Hasten Down The Wind for the album jacket alone. Footnote #2 - Not only did Whitney kill it, but because of the success of the single and soundtrack, she spawned a hundred imitators who parlayed that annoying melisma vocal technique. Yuck. I liked Linda's version of PPPM OK, like I said, but hers was the first one I heard, and when I did get into Warren and bought the self-titled LP that his version was on, the most obvious thing was the verse that he sang (to hilarious effect) that Linda omitted. I know this is not news to you but it's a significant item to those who haven't heard it. The verse: "I met a girl at the Rainbow Bar She asked me if I'd beat her She took me back to the Hyatt House I don't want to talk about it"(spoken) I howled the first time I heard it, and never quite enjoyed Linda's as much for the ommission. I'm sure that Warren was delighted with the "royalty pennies" that Linda's covers provided him, just as Joni has been for hers. Well, there you go. I heard Linda's version first and didn't hear WZ's for quite a while. Although I knew the song was his, I wasn't that familiar with his stuff until a few years ago when I bought one of those dreaded "Greatest hits" CDs. And I had forgotten about that verse so, reading it here, got me laughing. That is a tough act to follow! I think it's at www.kennedycenter.org Let me know if you get to check it out! Randall has a killer voice and plays a mean guitar. He speaks to the state of the world in his songs and is not afraid to. They ended with a song in memory of Eva Cassidy. Eva's parents were actually going to be there but they had a schedule conflict. When Randall and Claudia go to Iceland very soon, I believe they will be playing with Eva's brother who plays the violin or fiddle. I'm sorry, my memory lapses quicker than it used to! It was definitely a Joni mini-fest! I accomplished my feat with Gary Wright and it went very well! I'm still kind of numb about it. The XM Radio headquarters in DC is mind-boggling! That's the only word I can use to describe it! I definitely would like to subscribe to the service after meeting such wonderful people. They are truly a class act! I got the entire Green Room experience with a make up artist to boot!!! Gary Wright's stories were absolutely stunning! I don't want to give away any broadcast secrets but the stories behind the songs are amazing! That alone is worth tuning in for! We did the entire Dream Weaver album and Gary never sounded better. His wife Rose is so real and down to earth! I really enjoyed meeting and talking to her as well! The band was so funny telling me their stage mishap stories int he Green Room and egging me on to try pistachios for the first time (they are good!) I was amazed at the number of artists they've played with and particularly curious about the keyboardist's gig with the Crusaders! (Love them!) They were just regular people trying to make a living in music. They had a near miss with another plane taking off from the airport in Long Beach coming to DC (Private jets don't have to file flight plans????) I'm just thankful that they arrived safely. I think someone might have suggested Karla's voice was "flat", but I think they meant that it doesn't have a lot of punch in delivery, as opposed to singing flat notes. To be sure, she doesn't have a big voice and there's not a lot of tonal variation. As far as Bonnie and Joni singing "Midway", I can't say I prefer one over the other. I think they're both great. I love Joni's alt tunings, but whatever Bonnie is doing with the guitar on her version is wonderful as well. One thing about Bonnie, she never imitates another singer's style - she always makes songs her own. She is right on pitch with every note in the song, what I intended to convey was along the lines of what Catherine is saying. Linda's version has such a stronger emotional punch to it; not just louder, but warmer. By the same token, Karla's version has a better sense of fragility to it (intentionally or not), I just feel that Ronstadt communicates the sense of desperation. At the end of the day, it's just a song and hey both versions are purdy. A nice article came out in the LA Times yesterday about it. An excerpt: For Tomlinson and many others, those dreams started with Joni Mitchell. Like a mushroom that generates rings overnight, Mitchellbs breakout success in 1970 with her third album, Ladies of the Canyon, helped to inspire a widespread underground of female singer-songwriters. While some struck out for coffee shops and open-mike nights, others played for their high school friends or congregations. These girls emerged as flower children, their flowing tresses hanging over their acoustic guitars as they sang poems previously hidden in journals. Not everyone could be signed to Reprise or Elektra, though, so with the help of family, school faculty or a church bake sale, the music of these young women was recorded, privately pressed up, sold to friends and kindly parishioners, then forgotten as dreams faded against the harsh reality of the record biz or the call of family. Holy Taylor Ham, one dulcimer, one guitar. It doesn't even matter that JT couldn't play his part correctly. "Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire" becuase of the way she does that loose string at the beginning. "Dry Cleaner from Des Moines", for that blistering ending, even better on video. "Amelia / Pat's Solo". Okay, there's no studio version of Pat's Solo so this is in a special category. But, this is one of my favorite guitar solos of my lifetime. "Real Good, For Free" on the VHS video "Refuge of the Roads", because of the surprise. If you don't have it, I won't spoil it. Buy it on ebay with much patience. Off topic: There's a song that JT did on "By Request" where Arnold McCuller just lifted the roof off the place. I remember buying the S&L album the day it came out and never having heard of this Pat Metheny dude before. The solo in question simply blew me away as I'd never heard a guitar played that way ever. That amazing signature tone Pat gets became instantly recognizable. I've been a Metheny-head ever since. Thanks Joni! There are plenty of others I like as much as the original, but this one really stands out for me as being significantly better. The studio version is good, but this live version is gorgeous, both in the sparse but moody instrumentation and Joni's voice. I also heard some of Laura's songs covered by others first and fell in totally in love with them. I also love Linda's songs, had the songbook and sang it over and over and over. But as much as I loved their covers, when I heard Laura or Karla Bonoff sing them I somehow fell more in love with them. Love Bonnie's songs, too, and never knew until a few years ago that some of her greatest were written by Michael Ruff. When I heard Michael sing them it took them to another dimension. Same with Dolly's version of I Will Always Love You - it's the definitive version for me. I have a local songwriter friend who has written for Bobby Womack for years but Bobby's covers are a pale shadow of what my songwriter friend conveys when he sings the songs. I don't know - I guess when I hear the songwriter sing their original songs it means so much more to me. Now, I will concede that Bonnie's cover of Song About the Midway is the rare exception where she does, hands down, beat the original.
