I remembered watching Mandy Moore in "A Walk To Remember" and I thought the film was decent compared to the two other films that came out that same year that showcased the acting debuts of Mariah Carey (Glitter) and Britney Spears (Crossroads) -- yeah I used to watch those fluffy Hollywood films when I was in Manila where movie tickets cost much much less than the ones here in Chapel Hill/Durham. "A Walk to remember" was at least based on Nicholas Sparks' novel even if the film struggled with the storytelling aspect. But Mandy Moore was affecting as girl with a terminal disease. Then she appeared in "The Princess Diaries" where she played a mean girl to Anne Hathaway's Cinderella character and I thought, hmmm maybe Mandy Moore is less concerned about the roles she play onscreen and go for the meatier ones. Although she was not the main star in "Try Seventeen" with Elijah Wood, Franka Potente and Debbie Harry, she was appropriately in character. The last film I saw her in was "How To Deal" in Chapel Hill because it was shown much longer in theatres apparently because the author of the book the film is based hails from Chapel Hill. "How To Deal" is okay and Mandy Moore never embarrassed herself. But I am excited to see "Southland Tales" despite the savage criticism it garnered at this year's Cannes filmfest. After all, this is the second film of the director of "Donnie Darko". I didnt get the chance to see "American Dreamz" but maybe it will be shown in my favorite dollar-a-movie theatre in Raleigh soon. Finally, Mandy impressed me because the blog where I took that Joni reference says that she collaborated with the musicians of Hem for an album. Hope that album will have the vibe of a Hem album too. Man, Mandy Moore has got taste in music. Joseph in Chapel Hill np: Kay Starr "It Had To Be You" (via Pandora.com) Bryan a icrit : I consider myself a Mandy fan now (to my surprise actually). Somebody said "I'll pit John Mayer and Jack White against the 70's guitar gods any day." The point you missed is that Hendrix Clapton, J Page, Zappa, Santana and P Metheny were doing this in the late 60's and early 70's, 40 years ago!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and in my opinion these people came up with everything new and different you could do with a Guitar, there is nothing new left to do, can you argue with me on this ????????, so as good as John Mayer is, he is only copying what was done 40 years ago, can you see my point, where is the Originality in Music these days????. Its just not good enough to say "Oh my music is as good as the Beatles" back then all these artists were coming out with diverse Original Ideas, I mean like King Crimson ( In the Court of the Crimson King) was back then a totally new concept. that amazed me when i heard it for the first time, and that song is still fresh today. If you just take P Metheny and Jimmy Hendrix can you say there is anything new and different that can be played on a guitar that those two havent covered, really???. And Im sorry there isnt many new Melodic Songs being written by artists of this Century, apart from Tori Amos that stay in the memory, or you can sing or hum yourself, Returning to the Original thread, Joni Mitchells songs TOWER over all but a handfull of other artists songs in terms of Execution, Production, Feeling of the rendition of the Lyrics and Melody, and the partnership of her and Jaco was made in Heaven. American Idol was mentioned, the one thing about this show is the singers CAN sing well live, there is no bucking the art, like a lot of singers do today on Albums, with Digital Voice enhancers in the Studio, and when they sing live there horrible. I think to a certain extent we live in a post Prince and G Micheal world, where the Big labels are wary of signing Artists that can Sing well, Write there own songs, Produce themselfs in the Studio, and really dont need the label to survive. No they want Artists they can use for 3 years then toss aside like Creed where are they now???? Prince and G Micheal dared to say to the label, " The art in my Music is 100 percent ME, I can write new songs for any label and be just as good," and in Princes case he is right isnt he after hearing his new CD last month. Time will be the adudicater, but I dont see many new artists and Bands around today being around in 2010 Originality is the Key. you know stylize your music like no other artist has done before. its not good enough just to Copy. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Jun 2006 22:12:39 EDT From: JRMCo1@aol.com Subject: Re: Originality in Music!! andeemac2005@comcast.net writes: > Somebody said "I'll pit John Mayer and Jack White against the 70's guitar > gods any day." > > The point you missed is that Hendrix Clapton, J Page, Zappa, Santana and P > Metheny were doing this in the late 60's and early 70's, 40 years > ago!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and in my opinion these people came up with everything new and > different you could do with a Guitar, there is nothing new left to do, can you argue > with me on this ???????? > I can argue with you on it. Just as it's not about the bike for Lance Armstrong, for music gods, it ain't about no stinkin' guitar! Look at Joan: ukulele, dulcimer, piano, percussion, voice...and oh yeah, that six-stringed thing. Se could play the rain! Does one not consider the music of Ravi Shankar, just because he doesn't play the conventional instrument of the day? Guitar didn't come into vogue in the U.S. until around 1900. Before that, in the U.S., it was all about mandolins! Gibson started as a mandolin company and they had a great marketing scheme where they formed mandolin orchestras in towns across the country and used the conductors they hired as salespeople who sold different styles of their mandolins to townspeople on credit! It wasn't until after that saturation that they did the same thing with guitar, to an extent, with great success. Hence the prevalence of the instrument today. It was all clever marketing, as usual. - -Julius ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Jun 2006 23:11:38 -0700 From: "Lori Fye" Subject: Re: Exciting News!! > I'm sorry, Lori, believe me i am, and i even thought i shouldn't write this > at all because i honestly didn't want to ruin it for you, but i just had to > express my feelings towards this shameful album. You're not ruining anything for me, Nuri. Each person is entitled to her/his own opinion, and we all have different tastes. I had never heard "The Way It Is" before today, and I enjoyed the 2 minute clip. I would like to hear the entire song. I didn't listen to every song on the cd, but I listened to a few of them and I liked what I heard. I'm not the type who sits enthralled by every performance at Jonifest, but I also experienced Henning's and Christina's performance at Full Moon a few years ago, and I enjoyed them very much then and I like what I've heard of this cd now. I don't find it "shameful" in the slightest. I think it's an excellent effort, and besides, anyone who wants to try to tackle an entire cd of Joni's material gets my applause just for attempting it. It's difficult stuff, and imo, Henning and Christina have done some nice covers. Then again, I'm also not one of the "there isn't and will never be another Joni" crowd. Joni is my favorite, yes, but there are other incredible singer/songwriters in the world (Joan Armatrading comes to mind at the moment). Joni is not a goddess and sometimes people do a darned good job of covering her songs or experimenting with completely different arrangements of them. Occasionally some people even do an original song BETTER than Joni did it in the first place. Bonnie Raitt's cover of "That Song About The Midway" is a prime example. And, to my ears, I still think Claudia SanSoucie does the best "Conversation" I've ever heard -- yes, surpassing even Joni. Just my nickel's worth.
