'Angela , allow me to introduce you to the most awesome guitar tab site in the world;. _http://jonimitchell.com/guitar/_ (http://jonimitchell.com/guitar/) 5 years ago it changed my life. A fair amateur guitarist, for 30 years I had abandoned all hope of finding out (much less figuring out) how Joni did it - perhaps if I had devoted my life to it ........... Anyway, those more dedicated and talented than I actually did it (Sue McNamara - the site's founder -, Howard Wright and Marian Russell - with several other occasional contributors) - investigated, sleuthed, figured and reconstructed Joni's profound insight of yesteryear - to wit, "there must be 50 ways to tune your gittar". And shared it with us! Thank you so much, Sue, Howard and Marian (every year or so, I feel the urge to say 'thanks' publicly). Until then, I only knew Circle Game and Little Green (open G, real obvious). Now, I've got the whole world in my hands. As of now, I can do a decent or at least passable job on about 100 of Joni's songs. All that pleasure, because of this site.' Bobsart PS - Hey, here's a Joni song reference to Colorado for you. PS - my intro to Joni was in 1970 - Ladies of the Canyon. A few months later Blue came out - I was blown away. It took me 20 years to "get" Hejira and The Hissing of Summer Lawns and Don Juan's Reckless Daughter" and Shadows and Light, which probably represent the pinnacle of Joni's career. But I thought she was the greatest just on the basis of her first 6 studio records and Miles of Aisles. Little did I know. Of the new material Joni recorded in the 1980's and 1990's, there is much of merit - my favorites from this period are Turbulent Indigo, Night Ride Home, Wild Things Run Fast (yes, Bob Muller, you win) and - when you get to be over 50, you will really appreciate Travelogue. :-) Bob Sartorius _http://jonimitchell.com/lyrics/song.cfm?id=MySecretPlace_ (http://jonimitchell.com/lyrics/song.cfm?id=MySecretPlace) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 May 2006 06:49:23 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: Re: Joni Tabs Glad I won you over regarding WTRF, Bob. It's soooo good to be able to read the Digest and LEARN (ohmygoodness Laura!!!!!!). I'm primarily writing to welcome Angela. WELCOME to the family, Angela! You'll find that reading (and responding, if you're so inclined) the Digest creates a sense of connection with people who may not (always) agree with each other, but the JMDL members share their opinions openly (because we learn of the safe environment of not being 'judged' and, instead, feeling the UNconditional acceptance from other members. And so I welcome you with open arms!!!! I've been reading the lyrics of many of Joni's magnificently creative work since 1969. Joni is, I believe, intensely private, regardless of any interpretation that would lead the listener or reader to think otherwise. Of course, this is only my thought. I have consistently admired Joni because she is one human being who is so committed to her art, her many talents and gifts, that she will not, as far as I can see, offer a single compromise to the "machine" of the music business or the anticipation of the response or lack of response from her listeners. Of course I have often felt that Joni is expressing in her lyrics bits and pieces of her life, her reaction to the culture we are all experiencing, and the joys and heartaches that make us human. I respond to Joni with initial awe (and continual awe) and gratitude to Joni for creating even one song or one painting (and now DVDs so that we can share in some of her performances etc.). I also know I feel connected to Joni because the lyrics of the majority of her words and music resonate with something I have experienced, or an emotion I've struggled with, a joy of an awareness I think may coincide with how Joni may feel. In "Dog Eat Dog", there is one song that I have come to adore..."Good Friends". Here I find one essence of Joni. "Synchronized-like magic- Good friends you and me". Joni's lyrics are a continual inspiration for me, a true comfort during difficult times and a way of celebrating with her through the inventory of joy I have experienced. Joni is a constant part of my life. Of course, she most certainly has had and always will have influence as I grow from reading and listening to her songs filled with her emotions, reactions and sage wisdom. There is simply no other artist that so completely invites me to engage myself in my responses to the magical gift of the ability to share through the magnificence of writing, of painting, of the creation of a truly unique experience of human to human exchange. "No hearts of gold No nerves of steel No blame for what we can and cannot feel". I feel that Joni offers all of us to challenge ourselves with our personal feelings in response to what she shares with us in her music, her lyrics and her painting. Hi Angela and welcome! I'm fairly new to the list myself but concur that it is a fine and friendly place. I am a guitar teacher (amongst other music related work) and perform a two hour show of Joni music with my wife Robin Adler plus band. So I have learned a good batch of Joni guitar parts. As the others said. the guitar tabs archive is your best resource; that saved me months of reverse engineering. I too usually prefer standard notation to tabs, but with alt tunings tabs are better as the notes are not where you are used to finding them. My recommendation is to use several guitars which you leave tuned and acclimated to their drop tunings. The necks and truss rods hate it when the tension keeps changing. Also buy the heaviest strings you can lay your hands on such as baritone guitar strings (Black Crow drops the bottom string to Bb, Hejira to B). Or create mixed sets of strings so each string is as close to it's ideal tension as possible. Speaking of baritone guitar I'm thinking of getting one as they are designed to be tuned a min 3rd/fourth lower than standard. Lastly, when in a severely dropped tuning like many of Joni's do NOT tune by digital tuner alone. Use the tuner to get you where it recommends: that gets the open strings in okay, but as soon as you fret the strings your bass strings will be horribly sharp especially if you have tall frets and squeeze hard. Try and compensate by flattening the bottom string until it is tolerably in tune to the ear whether open of fretted, often 6-10 cents or so down. If you can plug in add some chorus; that helps smear the pitch problems. Play with a light touch to keep the tuning together and prevent the strings from slapping the neck (unless you want the "Wolf that lives in Lindsay" effect!) You'll discover that once you are in the right tuning for Joni's songs the hand positions are pretty consistent from song to song and often very easy...one or two fingers. You left off Jonatha Brooke from your list of singer-songwriters adept at alt tunings. If you're not familiar with her, a beautiful experience awaits you. And JB's song "Paris" from the "Plumb" CD is about the most evocative song about the place I've ever heard, since the discussion about the city is ongoing. cheers Dave Blackburn ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 May 2006 11:15:09 -0400 (EDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: new to the list... - --- Dave Blackburn wrote: > Also buy the heaviest strings you can lay your hands > on such as > baritone guitar strings (Black Crow drops the bottom > string to Bb, > Hejira to B). Any album(s)/song(s) you'd particularly recommend? (I've noted that "Paris" is one I should hear) I'm curious, have you all heard of Justin Roth or Willy Porter? Willy puts on an amazing live show (words cannot describe - just go see him!) and is incredibly fast on an acoustic guitar (plays with a looping machine sometimes too), and I saw Justin a few months ago at a small folk music venue - he does a bit of Michael Hedges-style work, as well as some David Wilcox-style work (he even wrote a song where he uses 3 different capos at one time), and has a very pleasant presence. I don't think he's so well-known yet, but if you like harmonies, I recommend his song "Shine" (not hard to pick out, I believe it's actually in standard tuning!). Dave, thanks also for the advice on strings - wish I owned more than one playable guitar so I could just put them all in a variety of tunings (my original guitar needs some work to render it playable again, and I just have one other one for now, so it gets the lovely neck-breaking treatment of alternate tunings from time to time, as did my old one when it was playable).
