I'm sure she would, but I do have to admit, the "Big Yellow Taxi" download I got was listed as by the Counting Crowes, not Joni, and although there were "her" versions available, they did sound really cheesy! I'm typically always shaking my head over what gets promoted and what gets ignored. But, just as an FYI - Coyote WAS released as a single, in the US it was Asylum Catalog # 45377 and in the UK it was Asylum Catalog # 13072. Blue Motel Room was the B-side. (I never heard it on the radio, though, except for AOR (album-oriented radio) FM stations that were playing the LP and not the 'hits'. As for who it's about, like you said it really is inconsequential. I tend to put my own characters from my own experiences into these roles, and that's one of the reasons Hejira (and so much of Joni's work for that matter) works so well for me. For what it's worth, I have long suspected that one 'ringtone' Joni loves is the sound the cash register makes. - --Smurf Tired of spam? Yahoo! Quite appropriate. "AAJ: What about when you moved on and started working with Joni Mitchell? DA: Oh yeah, and then there was the time that I took Joni by Miles' house. Oh! [laughs] That's another story. With Joni, I'm in California. Miles at this time had gone to live in this villa with Juliette Greco; famous French actress. So anyway, I've got two kids and I can't afford to do this shit, so I went and I got a call from Lou Rawls. And Lou Rawls was big time in that field, Las Vegas, MGM Grand, that circuit. And I got to make some money. AAJ: Was Jaco in that band? DA: Oh no. I got Jaco in that band. All this happened at the same time I was getting a divorce, so I moved out to California. Joni and I had a beautiful four year relationship together. AAJ: No kidding. I wasn't aware of that. [Note: Due to length and the fact that further material was subsequently discussed but became personal, it was decided to end here]. Thank you, Don. All the best to you. DA: Thank you. take care. However, Joni had several people sitting next to her from time to time at that event. The darker haired man was a friend (I think Kris Johnson is his name) who appeared with her other pals Paul Starr and Charles Valentino in the PWWAM concert. It is possible that Stewart is asking about this other person. Depends on which "flash" to which they are referring. Donald Freed was there more or less throughout. I was playing this song for myself on my electric guitar the other day, and really feeling good about playing and singing it (glad nobody was around to listen to the singing). Then, I watched it on both Last Waltz and the S&L DVD, cause I was in the mood to hear a really good and then a really great great great version of it. That Joni chose it as one of her songs for The Last Waltz (and Scorcese picked it as the one to include in the movie) speaks to that, too. A co-worker who watched the Last Waltz recently confessed that he really liked the Joni song :-) Maybe the world really would be ready for it now. Perhaps they could play her performance from the S&L DVD at the American Idol finale ;-) Bobsart ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 May 2006 09:12:35 -0400 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Thankfully there's no Joni covers on this one... http://www.soundgenerator.com/news/showarticle.cfm?articleid=7729&CFID=13011358&CFTOKEN=98025568 Bob NP: John Eaton, "You Took Advantage Of Me" - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The information transmitted is intended only for the person or entity to which it is addressed and may contain proprietary, business-confidential and/or privileged material. You made a good point with John Guerin! I agree with you that Coyote could have been a commercial success. The powers that be are such sticklers for time and I'm not sure how long the song is. I wouldn't care though, it tells such a great story and keeps me riveted. It's so full of imagery. I know of other artists re-releasing material from the past so it could happen. When time and good fortune allow, I'll write about meeting Donna B in Houston (wonderful wonderful wonderful!!!!), but right now I'm a busy bee just briefly buzzin' by to share a workplace email I just wrote. (Ha! *Real* professional, with the Joni thrown in....LOL). (Background information: Ross is our Study Abroad Director who, I recently learned, likes Joni. His favorite song is "Carey." No wonder, eh? It is such a "study abroad" kind of song!) Love, Patti P., racing away.... - ---------------- Dear Ross: I'm just back from Texas ("porous with travel fever") and playing catch-up, but I had to write to you first thing to thank you for the wonderful Study Abroad appreciation luncheon last Thursday. It was great to meet some of the faces ("tethered to a ringing telephone") I have talked to "for so many years". And the food, served on "that fine white linen", was delicious. As a matter of fact, it was *so* nice that I think we should do this once a month. Was denken Sie? ; ) And you can "rent me a grand piano and put some flowers 'round my room" and give out "fancy French cologne" as party favors. Ah, the Joni ideas are endless, n'est-ce pas? My only disappointment was that you don't know "Hejira" (both the album and the song). This is the song I chose to christen my new vehicle. Out of all of her great stuff, this one is close to the top, imo. I've pasted the lyrics below to get you up to Joni-snuff. Thanks again for the great time. You're a mean old daddy, but I like you. Peace, Patti Hejira by Joni Mitchell I'm traveling in some vehicle I'm sitting in some cafe A defector from the petty wars That shell shock love away There's comfort in melancholy When there's no need to explain It's just as natural as the weather In this moody sky today In our possessive coupling So much could not be expressed So now I'm returning to myself These things that you and I suppressed I see something of myself in everyone Just at this moment of the world As snow gathers like bolts of lace Waltzing on a ballroom girl You know it never has been easy Whether you do or you do not resign Whether you travel the breadth of extremities Or stick to some straighter line Now here's a man and a woman sitting on a rock They're either going to thaw out or freeze Listen Strains of Benny Goodman Coming through the snow and the pinewood trees I'm porous with travel fever But you know I'm so glad to be on my own Still somehow the slightest touch of a stranger Can set up trembling in my bones I know no one's going to show me everything We all come and go unknown Each so deep and superficial Between the forceps and the stone Well I looked at the granite markers Those tribute to finality to eternity And then I looked at myself here Chicken scratching for my immortality In the church they light the candles And the wax rolls down like tears There's the hope and the hopelessness I've witnessed thirty years We're only particles of change I know I know Orbiting around the sun But how can I have that point of view When I'm always bound and tied to someone White flags of winter chimneys Waving truce against the moon In the mirrors of a modern bank From the window of a hotel room I'm traveling in some vehicle I'm sitting in some cafe A defector from the petty wars Until love sucks me back that way Copyright ) 1976; Crazy Crow Music ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 May 2006 17:24:50 -0400 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Re: back to Joni work, porous with travel fever Yay Patti - glad you made it back and that you had a good trip.
