God, if I'm the only one who's been paying attention lo, these long years -- we're all in trouble. Many years ago Wally from Mexico or wherever revealed that Sam Sheppard's birthday is November 5, 1943 -- two days before Joni's. I had forgotten I had a memory . . . - --Smurf . Tired of spam? Here, in a bit of a jumble, are excerpts from several posts: Joni was touring with Rolling Thunder (and Sam) in 1975. The copyright for Coyote is 1976. From the song: HE'S TOO FAR FROM THE BAY OF FUNDY Sam Shepard said, "I've been upside down under falling horses at full gallop and I almost blew myself up once with a plastic milk bottle full of white gas on the Bay of Fundy, where they have the highest tides in the world." http://www.randomhouse.com/vintage/storylines/bios/shepard.html And Sam also had a home in Canada. http://www.lopezbooks.com/articles/norman.html FROM APPALOOSAS AND EAGLES AND TIDES Appaloosas are horses of course, and Sam is a horseman. And tides probably refer again to the Bay of Fundy, where (as Sam says correctly) they have the highest tides in the world. AND THE CARBON RIBBON RIDES Sam is a playwright and says he's never owned a word processor, so he says. He types all his work on an old typewriter -- probably with a carbon ribbon. And Sam is a prisoner of the white lines of the freeway as well. He says, "I've learned to love to drive. I love long-distance driving. The farther the better. I love covering immense stretches in one leap: Memphis to New York City; Gallup to L.A.; Saint Paul to Richmond; Lexington to Baton Rouge; Bismarck to Cody. Leaps like these. Without a partner. Completely alone. Relentless driving. Driving until the body disappears, the legs fall off, the eyes bleed, the hands go numb, the mind shuts down, and then, suddenly, something new begins to appear." The line "Privately probing the public rooms, peeking through key holes and numbered doors, where the players lick their wounds and take their temporary lovers and their pills and powders to get them through this passion play, This explicitly refers to Sam Shepard (Coyote) as he documents the "Rolling Thunder" tour. He was specifically dispatched by Dylan to follow everyone around so he could write the screenplay for "Renaldo and Clara". The "players" are of course Dylan, Baez, Mitchell herself. There are plenty of other lines in the song that point to Shepard and the experience of the Rolling Thunder Tour. "We saw a farm house burning down, in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the night, we ROLLED right past that tragedy." I don't feel like explaining every line but, if you want more proof, check out Shepard's "Rolling Thunder Log" (has lovely pics of Joni too.) ''i'm don juan's reckless daughter, i came out two days on your tail...''. joni was born on november 7, 1943 and sam shepard on november 5, 1943. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 May 2006 23:10:29 -0400 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu, Lama" Subject: Subject: Re: catholic school, njc This reminds me of the Delbert McClinton song, "One of the Fortunate Few". Remember that one? It starts out with a "second line" shuffle, and soon he goes, >Still the pleasure was worth the pain >of everything she put me through >an' I consider ma-self >one of the fortunate few. >Yeah, an' another thing- >she wasn't just good-lookin' >her imagination just wouldn't quit. >She'd make ya do things ya never thought about, >an' things ya wouldn't wanna admit. >There must be somebody else out there >who feels about her like I do >an' I consider ma-self >one of the fortunate few. Or maybe Van Halen's "Hot For Teacher"? She sounds like my 6th grade English teacher, who must have been about 22 years old at the time. I'll always remember Miss (Priscilla) Richlein. I loved to write for Miss Richlein... fer sure. Jim Bob.Muller recalled, >I did have to copy a page out of the dictionary once. That was uber-tedious and you had to stay focused on it. Phil Coley sat behind me and was jabbing my neck with a pencil - I finally turned around and yelled for him to stop it, and that's when Mrs. Galvin called us both up to the front and doled out aforementioned punishment. I don't hold a grudge against her though; after all, she was my first exposure to Joni Mitchell as she passed out BSN lyrics in class and we used to all have to sing it. Plus she was pretty hot with her brunette beehive. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 May 2006 20:15:45 -0700 From: Rick Subject: Re: Coyote -> DJRD Here's the quote from the Lopez Books website. This pretty much clinches it, as far as I'm concerned. In 1978 (or thereabouts), another small and interesting volume of Norman's writings was published in a tiny edition. Norman........ had been in touch with writer Sam Shepard, whose house in Canada he was then going to visit. A small Canadian publisher assembled a volume of Norman's Nova Scotia journal, including both a letter from Sam Shepard and some pages from the radio play Shepard was working on at the time. Also included in the publication was a photograph of Shepard and Norman together. The "book," if it can be properly called that, was titled Bay of Fundy Journal . Maybe "Coyote" is a composite of all 3. Was Peter Coyote the actual guy quoted when she wrote: >>>>he says: "Snakes along the railroad tracks" He says, "Eagles in jet trails" He says, "Coils around feathers and talons on scales Gravel under the belly plates" He says, "Wind in the Wings" He says, "Big bird dragging its tail in the dust Snake kite flying on a string">>>> Jim From: Catherine McKay DJRD is like Coyote, part 2. In some live concerts, Joni sings them one right after the other. The chords used are similar - from the same tuning and chord family (so are other songs, but these two really do fit together, thematically, musically & so on.) And DJRD the album is kind of a continuation of Hejira, where Joni is finishing up her road trip and coming back home. "I'm Don Juan's reckless daughter I came out two days on your tail Those two bald-headed days in November Before the first snowflakes sail" Some say it means "he" was born two days before Joni. That would make him a Scorpio like Joan. I always thought it meant she followed him a couple of days after he left (for wherever), one in a train, one in a plane. There has been discussion here that Coyote and the guy in DJRD are one and the same. John Guerin was born October 31, 1939 (Hallowe'en). Joni was born November 7, 1943. Peter Coyote was born October 10, 1941. Close but no cigar for the dates if it means Joni was born two days after whoever-it-was. Sam Shepard was born NOVEMBER 5, 1943 (two days before Joni) and some think that Sam Shepard is the "he" in DJRD.
