It was great for him in terms of the academics and class size. (South Carolina & Mississippi are always in competition for 49th & 50th in education). Anyway, I never had to write lines ala Bart Simpson but I did have to copy a page out of the dictionary once. That was real torture, because when you're writing lines you can hit a stride and just write on and on with a pattern, but copying a page out of the dictionary was uber-tedious and you had to stay focused on it. What made this particular punishment double-sucky was that I wasn't even guilty of anything. Phil Coley sat behind me and was jabbing my neck with a pencil - I finally turned around and yelled for him to stop it, and that's when Mrs. Galvin called us both up to the front and doled out aforementioned punishment. I don't hold a grudge against her though; after all, she was my first exposure to Joni Mitchell as she passed out BSN lyrics in class and we used to all have to sing it. Plus she was pretty hot with her brunette beehive. Catholic schools in the US are private schools, aren't they? Here in Ontar-ari-ario, they're publicly funded, the same as the public schools. So class sizes are the same as for the regular publics. When I was in high school, the province only funded up until Grade 10, so, once you hit Grade 11, it was private. In fact, when I was about to go into high school, they were only funded at the elementary level, so going into Grade 9, I was going in as if it were a private school. We had to write an entrance exam. After having written the exam, the province extended funding to Grades 9 and 10 and all of a sudden, instead of two Grade 9 classes, there were six, and all the riff-raff were let in. They probably had a reputation for academic excellence, whether that was based in reality or not, back in the days when they were "private" (but still much cheaper than the establishment schools like Upper Canada College). I think these days, the public and catholic schools here are more or less the same. There are a lot of schools, both public and catholic, that specialize in certain areas these days - schools for the arts, schools for jocks, schools for kids that are excellent at science, technology or whatever. It's a lot different from back in my day, when the choices were academics, technical or vocational, and where they pushed you into academics if you had high marks, even if you were interested in the arts or doing something tech-y. > > Anyway, I never had to write lines ala Bart Simpson > but I did have to copy > a page out of the dictionary once. My kid got suspended for smacking another kid over the head with a book a couple of years ago. The other kid had apparently started it, but Matthew got caught and either didn't want to rat out the other kid, or didn't know how to explain it. They have one of those zero-tolerance things for violence and he was suspended for three days. The vice-principal sort of apologized to me for having to do it, but she had no choice, since that's the law here. Apparently if Matthew had ratted out the other kid, or the other kid had 'fessed up that he started it, they would just have been called to the office, asked to explain, have to apologize to one another and that would have been it - back to class, no suspensions (unless there was major violence or a weapon involved). Matthew didn't mind though. He had a good excuse to not be at school. So much for punishment! > I don't hold a grudge against her though; after all, > she was my first > exposure to Joni Mitchell as she passed out BSN > lyrics in class and we > used to all have to sing it. Back when I believed all that religion stuff and was a Sunday School teacher, I used to compare a spiritual journey to the card game "I Doubt It" (if you're familiar with it, it's also called "Bull$hit" sometimes) and encouraged my students to study and research and look for their own truths - you never learn the truth until you say "I doubt it". Of course, in the process of doing that very thing for myself I became an atheist, so there you go - I don't know if that means I was a good teacher or not. At least I learned the teachings attributed to Jesus Christ, find truth in them and try to apply them to my own life which is more than I can say for most of his so-called followers. I wasn't all that impressed by the book. It's a bit of a romp - the kind of thing you'd read at the beach or on a plane, but I don't think the writing is that great, and I found the story very predictable. I'm not interested enough in seeing the film to rush to the theatre, but probably will rent it when it comes out on DVD. I'm mystified by the fact that some people are so outraged by the premise that Jesus might have married and had kids. To me, the message is what's important. Catholic dogma, for example, says you have to believe that Jesus LITERALLY transformed bread and wine into his body and blood. That would make people receiving communion cannibals, wouldn't it? And that he literally rose from the dead and that he is literally the son of God. Ever since I was at least ten years old, that never made sense to me. But, if you believe these things literally, then I guess your faith would be shattered to discover that maybe Jesus (if indeed he existed and isn't a mythological archetype of some kind) was human after all. Still, when things shatter, you either repair them or adjust and find something else! I'm inclined to think that most divine words truly are really the words of men, sometimes meant to provide some kind of explanation for why we're here and others, to keep us in line. I think it's right to question things, religious or whatever else, because it's only by questioning that we ever really move forward. I'd still like to know what people think after they've seen the film. Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tired of spam? Yahoo! In some live concerts, Joni sings them one right after the other. The chords used are similar - from the same tuning and chord family (so are other songs, but these two really do fit together, thematically, musically & so on.) And DJRD the album is kind of a continuation of Hejira, where Joni is finishing up her road trip and coming back home. "I'm Don Juan's reckless daughter I came out two days on your tail Those two bald-headed days in November Before the first snowflakes sail" Some say it means "he" was born two days before Joni. That would make him a Scorpio like Joan. I always thought it meant she followed him a couple of days after he left (for wherever), one in a train, one in a plane. There has been discussion here that Coyote and the guy in DJRD are one and the same. John Guerin was born October 31, 1939 (Hallowe'en). Joni was born November 7, 1943. Peter Coyote was born October 10, 1941. Close but no cigar for the dates if it means Joni was born two days after whoever-it-was. Sam Shepard was born NOVEMBER 5, 1943 (two days before Joni) and some think that Sam Shepard is the "he" in DJRD. Did they ever meet? I don't know and I don't much care - but I do love both songs. The SAT test measures *comprehension*, that is, what one has learned, presumably in school. Or perhaps, more accurately, the SAT score wants to reflect what one's *demonstrable* learning ability is, not one's *potential* learning ability, which is more precisely reflected by a measure of raw intelligence. Hence, the SAT score most accurately reflects the relative quality of the instruction one has received as a more weighted factor than one's basic intelligence variable. The SAT test is not designed to measure *intellectual ability, or aptitude* really. The most accepted empirical measure of raw intellectual ability has been the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Test for decades. If you had your scores to compare to W's on the Stanford-Binet, you could more accurately measure how dumb you are not, relative to the U.S. President. That is, unless you went to the same schools as him preceding your taking the same SAT test. In that event, you could compare your SAT numbers to his for an accurate *smarts* match-up, I theorize. - -Julius ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 May 2006 14:18:23 -0500 From: "mack watson-bush" Subject: Re: NJC: Patti P. goes to Texas Bob wrote: > > For what it's worth, his SAT score was higher > than mine, so I guess I have to say that I'm > dumber than Dubya - oh the pain!! As for standardized tests they don't test intelligence. Would surmise they test some things well but for the most part they test memory. All hogwash. My dad could build anything. We were not biologically related. He would make poor grades on any kind of test whereas I will almost always make an A. Give him some pieces of wood and give him a project and it never ceased to amaze me what he could do. Any project around the house or farm was childs play to him. Give me the same materials and I would stand there dumbfounded and what I created was nothing more than rickety crap. And who was the smart one? Who had the brilliance? The man never had anything but a smile for everyone. Guests, no matter who they were, he greeted like they were the most important person(s) in the world. I scowl at most and as a general rule don't find the human race very endearing. People at the door are not likely to return after meeting me. And I simply don't care. (I do have my good points but these are not them.) My point is: It's all relative. My dad would be considered by some as a country hick. He was the kindest, smartest man I will ever know. He is why I am proud to wear the Bush name. Buck Bush his name. A genuine Bush.
