I have just uploaded a new wallpaper. This one is for the song, Good Friends. It has always been my favourite song from Dog Eat Dog. Sometimes I think it almost redeems the album for me. The inclusion of Michael McDonald seals it for me too. I would have loved Joni to work more with him. Even, possibly with Steely Dan too. I hope you all like it. Notaro" Subject: Ronee Just got Ronee Blakley's two cd's that were resissued for Collector's Choice. Much better albums than I would have thought. And my most recent FolkWax e-zine had an interesting review with some Joni content: "Bluebird" features a backing vocal by, the then about to become famous, Linda Ronstadt (Ronstadt's Peter Asher-produced, breakthrough album, Heart Like A Wheel, appeared in 1974), while thematically the lyric can be summed up as a hobo's road song. The spectre of Joni Mitchell and the approach to acoustic music that pervaded the Canadian's 1968 debut album, Song To A Seagull aka I Came To the City/Out Of The City And Down To The Seaside, comes to mind during the album's closing song "Graduation Tune." Once more accompanying herself on piano and supported by string players, at the close of each verse Blakley relates that she is "Orbiting my own space," while the main theme is that of the "crossroads" we have to negotiate during our time on Earth. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 May 2006 23:14:36 +1000 From: Mark-Leon Thorne Subject: The Remix Project Finally Sees The Light of Day Hi Folks. Where did you go to school where they were still caning people? They were much more humane in Canada - they used the strap instead! LOL. They didn't do it often, and it always seemed to be boys that got it. Even if girls were bad, there was some reluctance to give them the strap. Even so, my older sister got it in Grade ONE!!! from her sadistic little witch/bitch of a wizened-up nun teacher - for putting holes in her eraser with her pencil. My sister was a bit of a brat sometimes, but you don't do that to a six-year old. The old biddy should never have been allowed near children. My Dad said they got the cane when he was a kid. They're not allowed to touch kids anymore. Not sure when they stopped with the strap and doubt it did any good anyway. I'm not sure if going to Catholic schools necessarily warped kids any more than going to public ones. It really depends on the teacher, the school, the location and the times. The teachers that were nuns in the schools I went to were St Joseph sisters. Their thing is hospitals and schools and most of them are either nurses or teachers. From what I know, they tend to be more moderate and as up-to-date as it's possible to be and still be a nun. Some were very liberal, some very old-fashioned. A few were bitter, like the old witch that strapped my sister. There may be things to be said for going to all-girls or all-boys schools, but I think I might have been less socially inept if I had gone to a co-ed school (or maybe not!) I think it's best if kids can meet and mix with all kinds and don't think religious schools are the best thing for encouraging multiculturalism and so on. And yet, one of the best teachers I had for talking about and making us think about social justice issues was a nun I had in Grade 12 or 13. Boys were corporaly punished more frequently than girls but at Saint Edmunds, the headmaster had a bent to punish either. We would occasionally have to "write lines" and I remember my older sister turning me in for some infraction because she was mad at me for walking to school with a boy she liked; I was given 1,000 lines to write and when my mother found out it was because of my sister she made her write half of them for me. If the teacher noticed, she said nothing. Personally I felt it was karma (now that I understand what karma is :) ) at that time I just felt a sense of "fairness". I don't think corporal punishment is utilized in English schools any longer, my stint would have been from 1959 - 1969. Will the family members at the wedding she is attending all look down on her when they see the Joni, and Peace sign buttons she wears? I do sincerely hope that while she is there, she is able to get to, perhaps with a resident JMDLer, to Camp Casey. She needs to go there, and they equally need to have her there. Anyway, I just wanted to mention that WFUV (member-supported radio from Fordham University in the Bronx) recently held their spring fund drive and, as part of it, asked listeners to send in their five "essential songs"; obviously, songs you consider extra special (can't live without, etc.) along with your reasons for the choices. They then compiled the results and listed the top 90 "Essential Songs", according to the votes. I sent in five (from five different artists) and, although my favorite Joni tune (Down To You), didn't make the list, four other Joni songs DID: number 16. A Case Of You; 21. All I Want; 35. River; 62. Carey. Not a bad showing, eh? Incidently, two of my other choices also made the list: 25. Jungleland (Bruce) and 46. For A Dancer (Jackson Browne). If you're interested in seeing the entire list, just go to their website at WFUV.org. BTW, the entire 90 songs were mixed into regular airplay during the week-long fund-drive. They also had selected listeners speak on air about their choices, to introduce each song, and I was contacted (by email) to do a blurb about For A Dancer. Unfortunately, I was away at the time and by the time I returned and responded, it was too late.
