I will go on a tangent here: I recently went to a conference with Dr. Byron Rourke giving a talk on "NLD" - non-verbal learning disabilities. He has certain interesting views about these things that make for interesting thinking, in terms of challenging one's understanding of conditions like ADD (or, for that matter, Asperger's Syndrome or William's Syndrome). One of hte very interesting things that he said (still not sure if i accept his claims, but i do respect them) was that many children diagnosed with ADD actually have NLD. People with NLD have very poorly developed visual and spatial skills and always perform poorly in these settings. Certain aspects of their lingustic skills, however, are well developed. Looking at the "natural history" of NLD, he claims, is critical in cases of suspected ADD. Professionals come in and assess young children and diagnose ADD and thus a presciption of methylphenidate is given. Over the next couple of years things settle down and the school performance improves. Professionals smile. Another job well done. Another case of ADD dealt with effectively. The problem, from his point of view, is this: As teh early years of school pass, the emphasis moves from visuospatial to verbal, which feeds into the strengths of those with NLD (he comes from a right hemisphere/left hemisphere perspective emphasising the functioning of white matter - the "white matter model"). They will go from very poor to better performance in the first few years of school without medication. Thus, we may have a widespread case of false attribution of therapeutic efficacy (big words for a sunday morning, lol). While it looks like effective therapeutic intervention has dealt wiht ADD the improvements and increased focus may just be a cohort of people growing up and getting the opportunity to utilise their strengths. Of course, it gets complicated because then you can ask "do all children with ADD have NLD? do all children with NLD have ADD? Do some children with NLD have ADD?" As i said, i have not fully accepted his claims but they are interesting and i intend to give some thought to his claims. I do think it is important to point out that a lot of children with ADD do not get into trouble, ever, and they do not all exhibit the restless symptoms. The problem is that ADD and ADHD are blanket terms referring to a number of "subtypes" that i think should be conceptualised as distinct, if related, conditions. We tend to use the label ADHD more than ADD in Europe and there are (supposedly) three distinct subtypes: primarily inattentive (which in my mind could be called ADD); primarily hyperactive (in my mind this should requires a new label that is descriptive) and a combined type (this to me should be called ADHD). The children with primarily hyperactive and combined type are those that exhibit the typical "challenging" behaviours that are very obvious. I strongly feel that a lot more research (medical/biological, psychological, social, and educational) is necessary to explicate these issues for us. Using blanket terms like ADD and ADHD can be misleading. ON the plus side, it does lead to much needed treatments for families in crisis. What Dr. Rourke does not account for is that there are many many very able professionals who are working in tough settings trying to do their best for people in need, and to tarnish them all with the false attribution brush really does not show a lot of respect for years of training and experience, and for the current received view of these issues. It is important to challenge these things, but give credit where credit is due. Just a few random thoughts that are not very organised but maybe of interest to you. Sorry for prattlin' on.... Have a good Sunday, GARRET Date: Thu, 11 May 2006 08:28:23 -0700 From: "Lori Fye" Subject: Re: (NJC) Bring On The $6 Gallon Of Gas > I don't consider ADD as something 'screwed up'... in fact everyone I know > with ADD is rather brilliant... Kate, I hope you will accept my apology for my off-the-cuff remark about ADD. I wouldn't say that people who have ADD aren't brilliant. I'm sure many -- perhaps most, perhaps all -- are. I think it's over diagnosed, anyway. What I do see is a lot of kids whose behavior is completely out of control. I'm not talking about kids who are in trouble -- yet. I'm talking about kids who can't hold still; they are literally jumping and bouncing everywhere. And they won't -- or can't -- calm down. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 May 2006 12:25:33 +0000 From: "Michael O'Malley" Subject: Re: Places of Joni To that list we could add: Hawaii (Night Ride Home) Bethel, NY (Woodstock) Malibu (Trouble Child) Rome (Only Joy in Town) Saskatoon (Cherokee Louise) Miami (Otis and Marlena) Paris (California) Speaking of place, in which three songs does Joni sing the word ``Canada ?`` : ) Michael in Quebec Mark-Leon Thorne wrote: Hi folks. I can sit back in blessed contentment and reflect on where they are right now. Physically, Christopher (27) is in Chicago, with a great job and a wonderful fiancee (a social worker). Michael (22), the new graduate, is on his way to a much-deserved vacation in VA with his girlfriend. They will both start graduate school in the fall. Michael's picture was in the paper yesterday for organizing a food drive as all the kids moved off campus, dropping their surplus non-perishables into the soup kitchen bins instead of the dumpsters. Phew! I am Mary Tyler Moore throwing her Joni beret into the air. We made it, after all. Allelluia!!!! The mothers protesting peacefully today in DC and Santa Barbara, like our Kate. (You go, girl!! Raise the candles high!) And the mothers whose children are struggling with addictions or mental or physical illnesses. And finally, to Laura Bush. I hope all the letters she gets from the codepink mothers speak to her. It's already here: part 1: Joni Covers 3.zip (32 MB) http://download.yousendit.com/82EF3C213EE12016 part 2: Joni Covers 3I.zip (37 MB) http://download.yousendit.com/2422781966A9EA78 (I'm not sure why they aren't bigger files: they're compressed at a bitrate of 160 kBs/s: if you want them in better bitrate, just let me know it; I parted the file in two for easier downloading) What's in there? Well, you can go to http://www.jonimitchell.com/undercover/byvolume.cfm , as usual for knowing it, but they're... 1. Tom Rush Tin Angel 2. Tom Rush Urge For Going 3. Tom Rush The Circle Game (all of them from "The Circle Game", 1968) 4. Natalie Cole Both Sides Now (from "For Our Children Too!", 1996) 5. David Crosby Yvette in English (from "Thousand Roads", 1993) 6. The Staton Brothers Band Night In the City (from "The Stanton Brothers Band", 1972) 7. Neil Diamond Both Sides Now (from "Love Songs", 1989) 8. Richard Dworski Woodstock 9. Richard Dworski The Circle Game (both from "Back To The Garden", 1992) 10. Phil Mattson & The P.M. Singers Night In The City (from "Setting Standards", 1985) 11. Kate Wolf Both Sides Now (from "Carry It On", 1996) 12. Amy Grant Big Yellow Taxi (from "House of Love", 1994) 13. Mary Black Urge For Going (from "Babes in the Wood", 1991) 14. Frank Sinatra Both Sides Now (from "Cycles", 1968) Well, as you can see, a couple of favourites (Mary Black and Kate Wolf), the best male singer to cover Joni (Tom Rush), a couple of very delightful instrumentals by Richard Dworski, the Crosby rendition of Yvette, a couple of versions that leave me indifferent (Amy Grant and The Stanton Bros.), one version that, for me, is painful to listen to because of its "modern" treatment (the one by Phil Mattson and...) and a couple of famous names that I can't help but diss profoundly: Natalie Cole (yes her dad was a perfect performer, but she's boring to my ears), Neil Diamond (hey, his free man in Paris is even worst: I can't stand him when he puts himself so dramatic)... and Frank Sinatra: sorry. Anyway, a very enjoyable compilation (please, don't take any care to my judgements!), put together by King Bob around 28 April 2000. In a couple of days, the 4th volume: "The Power of Cheese"... have a Wonderful time! Emiliano PS: I almost forget!!! A Gazillion (European, that's bigger, he he) thanks! to Eric (musicisspecial) for starting that " Perpetual Joni Covers Train" just two years ago... apart from my eternal gratitude to Bob.. for being Bob. You're right about Neil Diamond - Free Man in Paris is the worst, then Both Sides Now, then Chelsea Morning...stinkers all. It's a fairly recent phenomenon speechwise up here in the great white north, I think, and a lot of people object. They write "shocked and appalled" letters to editors about it. I don't understand how someone can *go* missing and yet, apparently, they do, on a regular basis. Since no one owns it, there's a strong case that no one has a legititmate claim of privacy. (Like the use of wireless phones) anyone who uses it is freely giving up their privacy. In short, I'm pretty sure they've been monitoring email since ALOHANET. What unnverves me is that NSA is buying counts on everyone's domestic calls now. If anyone using a landline phone speaks a "red word" like 'jih*d', I guess they'll forever be listed as a suspected supporter. I read (a few years back) that voice recognition sofware is so powerful now that they (we, our NSA) can monitor thousands of calls all the time. When the alogrithmn recognizes a "red word", it may not know the parties but it latches on for content. I think the technology has outpaced our government's ability to be accountable for wire tapping. On my good days, I think this explanation is getting garbled because this President is not the most skillful communicator we've ever had. He could "sound" arrogant just reading a weather forecast. It's hard for me to put much faith into the intellegence community because they were so easily "played" by the Executive Branch already in this decade. Jim L'Hommedieu ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 May 2006 02:11:46 +0000 From: "Patti Parlette" Subject: njc, Good luck to Kate, and lots of SB memories Bon soir, Joniamigos! I wrote this post last night, and then decided not to send it until after Kate sang today. I did not want to addle or burden her mind with anything extraneous to the cause before her important performance today. So now I'll just let it rip. Warning: it's long! Dear Kate: I just sent you the picture of me and Cindy to wish you good luck. I hope it came through. I hope you can feel our hands on your shoulders as you sing tomorrow. I can already hear your beautiful voice, resilient and strong. You go, girl! Strike every chord that you feel! Please tell us what time this all takes place. I need to know so I can totally focus on being there with you in spirit. If you will indulge me in sharing some personal memories....Santa Barbara holds a special place in my heart and mind. My family and I (Mom, Dad, and my three younger brothers) moved out there in November 1966. I was 12 years old, leaving all my 7th-grade friends from CT, which was hard, but I was soooo psyched to be moving to California, the land of the Beach Boys "Good Vibrations." We lived in a hotel on Cabrillo Blvd for three weeks while our house in Goleta was being built. The hotel is directly across from where you will be tomorrow. I gazed upon that beach everyday, feeling so blessed to be there. There were flowers everywhere, and palm trees. To me, it was a magical site. And now, of course, it is even more hallowed ground, home of Arlington West. We lived in California for one year, one month, and three days...but who was counting? I went to St. Raphael's school in Goleta for 7th grade. My teacher was a very cool nun named Sister Mary Anselm. One day she had us all write nice things about each other, and she took the comments and made cards for every student with their picture at the top, with all the nice comments underneath (the opposite of a "slam book"). Unfortunately I don't still have mine, but I remember that one comment was: "really shy at first but pretty cool when you get to know her." LOL! She took our whole class to a beautiful retreat house in Montecito, where we had a folk mass and then were free to roam the grounds all day and write in our journals. I experienced the "Summer of Love" in SB, and it formed my character like nothing else. It was my coming of age. How many JMDLers remember 1967? I hope my personal recollections will bring back good memories for you, too. My friends and I went to the beach at Isla Vista near UCSB almost every day that summer....wearing our hot pink and orange and yellow jamms, listening to Sgt. Pepper ("All You Need is Love", "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", "Penny Lane", etc.), the Turtles "Happy Together", Jefferson Airplane's "Go Ask Alice, I think she'll know...", "and you know...." on our transistor radios...and there were no sandflies to kick off at all! It was paradise. We would go to the "Psychedelic Shop" (yes, there really was one!) to buy political pins and paper daisies and incense and hang out with the *real* older hippies. I still have a poster I took down from a strip mall on Hollister Ave. advertising a concert at the Avalon ballroom w/ Quicksilver Messenger Service and the Steve Miller Band. Refugio Beach, El Capitan....you must know all these places, Kate, non? We rode our bikes on Calle Reale past the lemon groves and avocado orchards to the record shop where we could play the 45's before we bought them -- or didn't buy them. We bought slurpees at 7-11 which was a pretty new and cool thing. I had lost touch with my Catholic friends and started hanging out with the kids in my neighborhood. I "fell in love" with Danny Baker. Joe's mom offered to take us Disneyland if we earned money doing chores, so I ironed all summer (10 items for one dollar, and it was mostly men's shirts!) and babysat (50 cents an hour, 75 after midnight) and cleaned houses. The trip was fun at first (there were 7 or 8 of us, I think), until Danny dumped me for stoopid Judy by that big castle (is that Sleeping Beauty's?) and my girlfriends and I took off to see Tommy James and the Shondelles (?) on some stage, and we kept singing "Judy's Turn to Cry" when ever we saw stoopid Judy (that slut! LOL!). I'm also hearing Lesley Gore's "California Nights" as I write..... When the summer ended ("I want to thank you for giving me the most wonderful summer, of my life....." who sang that? Is that Lesley Gore, too?), I begged my parents to let me go to Goleta Valley Junior High (having become way too hip for Catholic school...lol!), and they finally caved. A school with no inside hallways....how cool is THAT? And foreign languages! Oh, and I saw "Endless Summer" and the Sonny and Cher movie in downtown SB (we sat in the balcony, my brother and I), and "To Sir With Love" in a Goleta theater -- w/ some girlfriends and this time, with BOYS! Rolling, rolling, rock and rolling...lol...that's when it all began. In 1968 we moved back to CT, and I *always* longed to go back to California. It was just a dream that I had, and it was never-ending. It was in CT, in 9th grade, that my friend Olana gave me STAS. Her sister had been to Woodstock and turned us on to Joni. The years spin by, and now the girl is twenty. In 1974 I went to study abroad in Paris, France (where they kiss on Main Street, but of course that came later) with this song playing constantly in my head: Sitting in a park in Paris France Reading the news and it sure looks bad They won't give peace a chance That was just a dream some of us had Still a lot of lands to see But I wouldn't want to stay here It's too old and cold and settled in its ways here Oh but California California I'm coming home I'm going to see the folks I dig I'll even kiss a Sunset pig California I'm coming home So the years spin by and now the girl is....forty something. After the hope and the hopelessness I'd witnessed thirty years, we FINALLY get back to California. (Oh, California!) My dad wanted to see it one more time before he died. It was more beautiftul than I remembered. We drove through the town (as the children let out from the schools) and my mom and dad and I were oohing and ahhing at everything. I remember thinking: "1967 was the best year of my life", when my dad said, from the back seat, "I think 1967 was the best year of our lives." Sigh. I miss my Dad. I am so glad we got back to SB together. It is now a very cherished memory for me. While I was there, Kate, I looked you up in the phonebook. I was going to call you but then my parents were so tired (porous with travel fever), and we had so little time (we were only there one night, at the Holiday Inn on Calle Reale), that I never did. Plus Obak Obama was giving his speech that night and I wanted to watch it. But it's the thought that counts, right? Darn right! To make a long story short (oh, I wish I could be as succint as Catherine and Smurf!), I guess what I'm trying to say is that I am TOTALLY with you tomorrow, Kate. On the beach, across from my old hotel room, with our shared Joniness here, with having met my hero, Cindy Sheehan who was there herself to mourn the senseless loss of her beautiful son in 2004, with you singing your heart out on the beach with all those crosses.... I wish we could all see you on our TV sets! I will feel you, and be with you, in my heart and mind this Mothers' Day. Love, and peace, Patti P. >Thanks for your sweet thoughts patti...
