They don't seem to think about the cost of human lives. He said: "We don't do body counts." Hmmmm....over 2,300 Americans and 36,000 Iraqis? And those are just the ones who died. It doesn't account for the thousands who have been maimed for life, nor for those traumatized for life by the horrors they have witnessed and the loved ones they have lost. The math is too complicated for me. Look at this: I paste, from http://iraqbodycount.org/ "From Iraq Body Count Press Release 13, 9th March 2006. En Espaqol In Italiano For current totals including the update below, see our database page. IRAQ DEATH TOLL IN THIRD YEAR OF OCCUPATION IS HIGHEST YET The civilian death toll has risen inexorably for the entire duration of the US-led military presence in Iraq following the initial invasion. That is the grim reality uncovered by ongoing tracking of media reports by the Iraq Body Count project (IBC). Figures released by IBC today, updated by statistics for the year 2005 from the main Baghdad morgue, show that the total number of civilians reported killed has risen year-on-year since May 1st 2003 (the date that President Bush announced major combat operations have ended): 6,331 from 1st May 2003 to the first anniversary of the invasion, 19th March 2004 (324 days: Year 1) 11,312 from 20th March 2004 to 19th March 2005 (365 days: Year 2) 12,617 from 20th March 2005 to 1st March 2006 (346 days: Year 3). In terms of average violent deaths per day this represents: 20 per day in Year 1 31 per day in Year 2 and 36 per day in Year 3." This is the course we stay? Hell no! (Big demonstration in DC today) Back to being with like-hearted and like-minded people, I think I forgot to share with you my experience at a candlelight peace vigil held to mark the 2000th American death in Iraq. (There's some joni content here!) It was not that big, in tiny little Willimantic CT, but it was inspiring nonetheless. I had invited some UConn folks, but drove there alone. I was sitting in the parking lot (Subterranean by my own design? oops! Joni TIC!) playing Court and Spark in my new vehicle when I spotted Chris L., our new young Spanish professor who "gets it". I yelled out: "Chris! Over here!" He came bounding over with an undergraduate student in tow (gotta teach the children well!) and said: "Jason, this is Patti. Patti LOVES Joni Mitchell." Jason shook my hand and said he "didn't really know Joni Mitchell". Ha! I am armed and dangerous -- I went back to the car and turned up the CD player full-blast and Chris and I belted out "Free Man in Paris." We got some looks, and I'd like to say that all the people in the parking lot came over and joined us, but that would be a lie. And Joni people don't lie. But it was great Joni fun nonetheless. And back to Jason, the young undergrad who didn't really know Joni? By golly, he knows of her now! I'm sure he'll never forget the sight of his Spanish professor belting out Joni Mitchell with some weird lady in a theater parking lot! Sorry, I went off there. But as you all know and understand, it all comes down to Joni! Back to you Deb, congratulations on your awesome experience, and thanks so much for sharing it. I'd like to hear more. I went to the exhibit last Sunday, took pictures, and copied down a few things -- a poem Joni wrote to her dad, a bit of an essay about painting -- but I haven't had time to sit down and write up a report. Let me just say that it was very nicely done, that when Joni was two or three she drew the same sorts of pictures that we all have in our baby books from when we were that age, but after that her talents really start to show in her drawings. Les, the pictures I got will take some time to send via dialup so will have to be emailed one at a time I think. Because so many of the photographs and drawings were framed and glass-covered, I thought there'd be a huge glare from my camera flash and so did not try to take a photo of everything. It turned out I got some that were pretty decent, glare or no glare. But you have to enlarge them once in order to read the words. I do like her -- as with anyone, I don't like everything about her, but I would like to see her have a go as president of the U.S. However, I stand by original comment that, at this time, her candidacy would not be a good thing. And everyone looks so happy! I know from being at earlier demonstrations how positive and hopeful the atmosphere can be, even though the reasons for the gathering are deadly serious. This demonstration got much more news coverage than earlier ones did so that's a positive sign there's some change happening. I remember being surprised and dismayed that the NYC demonstration held a couple weeks before the start of the Iraq invasion got no media attention at all (and it was bitter cold that day! frozen toes and all, thousands of people, including me, were there! and barely a word about it in the media), so this reporting shows that finally attitudes are changing. Mike, I don't know whether you had a chance to see any of the recent BBC series "Folk Britannia" but it included a great recording of Al Stewart singing "Pretty Golden Hair" in the 60's in the Troubadour Club, London. (Interestingly, The Troubadour was the venue for the first ever meeting of the UK JMDL.) I'm also pleased to be reminded of Love Chronicles. I remember as well a fantastic instrumental Al used to play called Ivitch which was spellbinding to watch and, I think, was in an open tuning. Bedsitter Images is the album I remember best. There was lots of good stuff in the Folk Britannia series, including some footage of Sandy Denny I had never seen before. CSNY tickets go on sale in Winnipeg tomorrow 10 AM NJC Mags, There is a small group of people, of a certain age, who think CSNY is their generation's Elvis. I've only met a couple of them but they are as rabid as they come. They're the kind who say, "I have *ALL* of their albums!!" But it turns out they have three: "Crosby, Stills and Nash", "Deja Vu", & "4 Way Street." There is also a small group who think the Eagles are their generation's Beatles. A friend of mine is a Beatle fanatic. He bought the fricken cartoons, okay? At retail. Their alliance is based on unshakable faith. It's also marked by zero curiosity about anything new and a low tolerance for anything different. I think of them all as musical Fundamentalists. Jim L'Hommedieu np on the radio: "Smoke on the Water". They pull out the 70s stuff on Sunday morning when only old folks are awake. 's all right with me. >I'm more than disappointed to learn of the prohibitive, high cost of freedom to go to the CSNY concert. Can anyone tell me why they are so expensive??? Nearly $200; or the next level is $126.00. PS, I'm not knocking CSNY, Elvis, the Beatles, fundamentalists, Ticketron, or Deep Purple. Thank you. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Apr 2006 21:13:51 -0400 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu, Lama" Subject: Nawlins Podcast right now. njc MSN is releasing webcast highlights (podcasts?) of today's Jazz & Heritage Festival in Nawlins. Then there're Joni's contributions to that subject matter, such as "Harry's House," "Hissing of Summer Lawns," and "In France They Kiss on Main Street," with its incomparable lines, "They've been broken in churches and schools, And molded to middle class circumstance." Exactly, that's why I don't want to go on and on restating the same opinion on the issues over and over. It makes me feel boorish and boring. > Why must I be harrassed until I submit to your opinions? > > Oh, poor Kakki. In the legal world when witnesses are being questioned there are two major rules of engagement and bases for objection. You cannot badger the witness and you can't ask them the same questions over and over once the witness has answered them to the best of their ability. I've written here ad nauseum on these issues (except for the Joe Wilson issue) so I'm objecting on the basis of badgering and "asked and answered." Maybe someone thought my opinions or perspective has changed. It hasn't so it becomes obnoxious of me to keep stating the same thing over and over at some point. > Dismissing facts as mere opinions so you don't > have to consider any of it tells me a lot about you. I have considered it over and over. We all have our own set of facts. But none of us has the whole, definitive truth. Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Apr 2006 23:15:26 -0700 From: Subject: Neil Young New Young album (njc) Karen, Thanks for sending the easy links to the new Neil album. Although I am not crazy about some of his lyrics from a political viewpoint, the music really is some of the best he has ever put together. I was struck by two songs in particular - Flags of Freedom - which sounds so much like a derivation of Dylan's Chimes of Freedom as covered by the Byrds. Since he pays homage to Dylan in this song, I think his appropriation is obvious approbation ;-) It's one of my favorite songs and I've posted the lyrics below. Also, Restless Consumer sounds like pure 80s L.A. punk. And the Herb Alpert-type trumpets throughout a few of the songs was cool, too. Thanks also for making me spit convulsively with laughter at the redstates parody. Those guys are kind of unknown, I think, but they are funny as hell and yes, very gross, too! Kakki Chimes of Freedom (Bob Dylan) Far between sundown's finish an' midnight's broken toll We ducked inside the doorway, thunder crashing As majestic bells of bolts struck shadows in the sounds Seeming to be the chimes of freedom flashing Flashing for the warriors whose strength is not to fight Flashing for the refugees on the unarmed road of flight An' for each an' ev'ry underdog soldier in the night An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing. Even though a cloud's white curtain in a far-off corner flashed An' the hypnotic splatter of mist was slowly lifting Electric light still struck like arrows, fired but for the ones Condemned to drift or else be kept from drifting Tolling for the searching ones, on their speechless, seeking trail For the lonesome-hearted lovers with too personal a tale An' for each unharmful, gentle soul misplaced inside a jail An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing. Starry-eyed an' laughing as I recall when we were caught Trapped by no track of hours for they hanged suspended As we listened one last time an' we watched with one last look Spellbound an' swallowed 'til the tolling ended Tolling for the aching ones whose wounds cannot be nursed For the countless confused, accused, misused, strung-out ones an' worse An' for every hung-up person in the whole wide universe An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing. ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2006 #168 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe -------
