(and mike in barcelona chopped it up) >>I had all but forgotten Al Stewart; ...Thanks to some compilation CD's from Mike in Barcelona, I was reminded how much I liked his sound; his unique tenor, his clear and fluid acoustic guitar playing, and his unique lyrical pattern. He writes mid-tempo folk rock and commonly injects themes of European history, sometimes using historical events as a metaphor for personal relationships. ...So when I read that he was coming to The Handlebar on April 26, I thought 'why not', and it was in fact the first time he had played Greenville. ..His show was totally spontaneous, playing mostly off audience requests. The atmosphere was very intimate and even conversational at times. His one-of-a-kind voice still sounds exactly the same as it did when I first heard it 30 years ago, though he has lost a note or two on the top end. "On The Border" was melodically reworked so that he didn't have to tackle the bridge's high notes, but this isn't a complaint - he sounded great, and the only acoustic player I've seen with more mastery is Richard Thompson (who he talked about working with back in the 60's). Roads To Moscow, Time Passages, Life In Dark Water, Palace of Versailles were some of the highlights - he reinvented Year of the Cat, giving it a Heard It Through the Grapevine intro and closing and shifting the rhythm a bit. What made each song even more enjoyable was the introduction/explanation he gave with intelligence and humor.<< Al Stewart, of course, played at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970, although I can't now recall if it was the same day as Joni. For logistic reasons the festival was run on an alternating 'electric band, acoustic band' model; allowing time to move the amps etc for the electric sets while the acoustic sets took place. Given the chaos which took place for various reasons, Al was delayed, rescheduled, almost cancelled, then was finally given a reduced set, reduced to one song, in fact. He explained this to the audience to wide booing, then introduced the name of the song he was going to do. It was 'Love Chronicles' and if anyone out there in Joniland knows nothing of this song, it is a magnificent song which lasts about 15 minutes and is almost, as the title suggests, an epic song describing his love affairs from his first, 'Stephanie' and subsequent lovers. Wonderful. There are many re-issues of Al Stewart CDs but most of them are post 'Cat' period. I would like to hear his earlier songs again, such as 'In Brooklyn', 'Richard Foster', and more. Thanks for the memory Bob. mike in the mud near the big red balloon.... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Apr 2006 07:04:48 EDT From: StDoherty@aol.com Subject: Re: onlyJMDL Digest V2006 #125 Glad to see For the Roses get it's props. This album has always been a favorite. I thought that You Turn Me On I'm a Radio was a perfect single - especially for the times, but not a good sample from this masterpiece. By the time I got this album I was a committed Joni fan. I got Blue in 71 as a Christmas gift and as funds allowed (but pretty quickly)added Clouds and Ladies of the Canyon to my collection. For the Roses came at a perfect time - and since I had no money at the time - a girlfriend gave it to me as a very early Christmas present. I'm surprised that this album doesn't get the recognition that Blue and Court and Spark get. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Apr 2006 07:42:18 -0400 (EDT) From: "Gerald A. From a Hartford Courant interview "Monkee Business Revisited" with MaryEllen Fillo (01/15/06, no longer on-line, DRAT!): "Will there be a 40th year reunion for the Monkees? Rght now it's looking very poor. Micky (Dolenz) was a DJ in NY for a number of months -- a hundred shows -- and on his first day, I drove down to within range of his show and called in to celebrate, to congratulate him, and he was very cordial on the radio. It was good to talk to him. And since then we've had a few email exchanges. I sent a message to Davy (Jones) asking about a 40th anniversary and he seemed to be very reluctant. So we've talked. Not (Michael) Nesmith. Nesmith's out of the picture. He's persona non grata in my world. Really, he's been crummy." (I'm hearing Joni in "Furry Sings the Blues" growling: "I don't like you.") (Yes, I hear Joni voices, all the time...LOL!) Peter Tork is from my town! His father was an Economics (I think) professor at UConn. My 12 year- old neighbor Matt takes drum lessons from his drummer. Peter went to the same h.s. as my two sons. Intro to that piece: "Peter Halsten Thorkelson, 63, grew up in Mansfield, graduated from E.O. Smith High School and went on to fame as Peter Tork of the Monkees. Beginning in 1966, the rock group made 58 episodes of its wildly popular television show, released six record albums and made a feature film. Tork recently has moved from the West Coast back to his family homestead and has a new band." www.petertork.com www.shoesuedeblues.net www.monkees.net One of these sites quotes Jimi Hendrix as saying that Peter Tork was "the most talented Monkee." I remember loving that show at age 11 or 12. I think it was on Mondays, and I used to go to Susan LaGuardia's house to watch it. She was a whole year older and wiser than me so I thought I was pretty darn cool. We would jump off the couch with glee when it came on and would sing and dance along with the theme song. Micky was my favorite. More from that interview, Peter talking: "The Monkees brought to television the slightly anarchic air of a time when, in fact, as far as I'm concerned the moral authority -- those people in charge in the day -- were bent on some egotistical trip of their own. It was obvious to those of us in our 20s that there was nobdoy home upstairs in the corridors of power, that we were bereft of moral authority, and I don't know if we've gotten one since. The Monkees TV show had no adult authority figure. No senior adult. Up 'tll that time, TV show were "My Three Stupid Sons" (sic) and "Father Knows Best, You Idiot" (sic) and those kinds of shows. The Monkees was the first and only sit-com for years not to have a serious older adult authority figure." Have a pleasant (valley) Saturday, tout le Joni monde! David Hare has written a blend of piercing, in-depth observations and artfully integrated material from actual transcripts. Hare hits his targets with unerring accuracy. -Joel Hirschhorn, Variety, June 7, 2005 - ----------- And from my old newspaper (Hartford Courant, 4/14/06, this one's not on-line anymore either! argh!), by Malcolm Johnson: "The Bard Meets the Bush Enough Humor In This Import To Make You Forget What It's Based On David Hare has compared his contemporary history play "Stuff Happens" to the tales of William Shakespeare. And as vigorously staged by Daniel Sullivan, this "living newspaper" vision of George W. Bush's "war on terror" sometimes recalls the director's recent production "Julius Caesar." This time, Peter Francis James' torn, passionate Colin Powell becomes a new Brutus. The Roman tragedy and the chronicles of English monarchs center on the pursuit of power, and this quest drives the play, which takes its title from a comment by Donald Rumsfeld on the looting of Baghdad art treasures. As seen by Hare, the second-generation President Bush views his election not as merely dynastic but as divine right. Early on it in the English import that opened Thursday at the Public Theater, Jay O. Sanders' W. drawls, "I feel like God wants me to run for president." Perhaps > some people can't take the ballsyness but got used to it by Court & > Spark which is why take takes the award. I think 'For the Roses' is Joni's emergence from the emotional crisis she commemorated so beautifully on 'Blue'. Yes the vulnerability is still there but she also makes it clear that she's a survivor and she's not going to crumble. I don't think we have heard her emotions so raw and transparently on display since 'Blue'. She's grown up on FTR. Yes, the songs are beginning to acquire some muscle. 'Banquet' sets the tone with it's observations about some turning to heroin, some watching the paint peel off and then she goes right in to 'Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire', one of her most powerful songs ever, imo. 'Woman of Heart and Mind' is a declaration, stating her strength and intelligence, her perceptiveness and ability to detect falseness and self-centeredness in her lovers. But she also says 'I'll try to be there for you when your spirits start to sink'. The heart is still there. But don't you dare discount the mind and its formidable powers of observation and analysis. 'Lesson in Survival' - I think the word 'survival' in that title is very significant. The album's title - I am strong enough to compete in the 'cesspool' (word she uses in later references to the music business, not from FTR) and run for the roses. And she will go on to win many artistic victories as the mama lion springs from album to album, courageously following her own muse and leaving the fragile girl with the guitar far behind. Jamie, you mentioned you wish you could have heard the live performance of the orchestral version of 'Judgement of the Moon and Stars'. I was among the lucky ones who saw Joni with the orchestra on the 'Both Sides Now' tour at the Concord Pavillion. This was one of the encores they performed after doing 'BSN' in sequence in its entirety. It was stunning. One of the wonderful things about that concert was seeing Joni sing without a guitar in her hands or sitting at a piano. She was so expressive with her hands and body language. I have always been fascinated by her performances of 'Goodbye Porkpie Hat' and 'Dry Cleaner from Des Moines' on the Shadows and Light video for this very reason. I think singing without her hands being occupied with playing an instrument must have been new to her then. She seems a bit tentative but there is a natural born actress in her and it is beautiful to watch her express the song with her entire body. Marianne >Second, this will probably not be a popular opinion here, but I'll share it anyway: as much as I would like to see Hillary have a turn at the presidency, I think the worst thing that could happen right now would be for her to run. There are enough Democrats who so dislike her, it would absolutely split the party and we'd end up with another Repub for president. Not to mention the muckraking that would take place, which far exceed anything we've experienced to date.< _________________________________________________________________ FREE pop-up blocking with the new MSN Toolbar get it now! http://toolbar.msn.click-url.com/go/onm00200415ave/direct/01/ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Apr 2006 17:04:03 -0700 (PDT) From: mags h Subject: find the cost of freedom??? (sputter splatt whish)..... to the point.....Im more than disappointed to learn of the prohibitive, high cost of freedom to go to the CSNY concert. (July 14th 2006). There's no way I can geaux (sound of this heart wrenching boohoo)....all that said....can anyone tell me why they are so expensive??? Nearly $200; or the next level is $126.00. I dont get it. I never knew there were Joni DVDs and gold CDs and all this stuff. I've been shltered. I have a Joni bootleg that I haven't played in 30 years and probably never will until they re-invent the turntable. Anyway, I think For the Roses was my first Joni album, and then Blue and then Ladies and then Clouds and then Song to a Seagull (for a seagull?) which I bought only out of a sense of duty and obligation. But as I was looking through the tracks just now I recall a lot of the songs fondly, like Michael from Mountains. I think it was 1973, but I could be wrong. Then Court and Spark came out and she was discovered, but then the Hissing of Summer Lawns was released and people didn't seem to like it, even though it's one of my favorites. But I will always love For the Roses. I think of Woman of Heart and Mind a lot. Maybe I saw myself in it. But I think it's one of her best, along with Blue and Hejira. And The Hissing of Summer Lawns. Love The Boho Dance. I see people doing that dance every day and they can't break out. It can be a killer. Anyway, nice to know there are others out there. Steve BTW: On the issue of bootlegs, I heard a Joni bootleg from some cafe over the radio on Thanksgiving, probably 1979. It was done in the early 60s, and it had a song on it that I know was recorede by someone else (it was familiar) but that Joni wrote. But never recorded. (Obviously, because I would have bought it.) Not much to go on, but does anybody have the remotest clue of the what the heck I'm talking about? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Apr 2006 21:22:07 -0400 (EDT) From: "Gerald A. Most likely the song was Urge For Going, which she did record but was not released until Hits, in 2000. I just got off the phone with Mr. Joni Noodle himself, Walt Breen, and he asked me to let you know that he is doing fine and he's working on a little essay for the list. He has been very busy since Robert's final illness and passing, and says he hasn't been near the Internet in months, but he's well and in very good spirits. He was going out tonight to celebrate his 50th birthday a little bit after the fact with some friends. (His real birthday is Earth Day, which I guess is why he's such a nuturing lover of all things earthy!) So raise your glasses of whatever to Walt! - --Smurf Tired of spam? Yahoo! When you said you bought the first 2 albums 'out of duty' I kinda know what you mean, since her music got more interesting with every release. The bootleg you describe...I'm thinking it might be the 2nd Frets tapes-very early recording (Philly I think?), she did alot of songs that she never recorded, including Eastern Rain that I think was done by Fairport Convention. Others here know the whole scoop, but that's the only era I can think of where she performed songs that ended up being done by others. I think you can get it on bit torrent or something...dudes, help me out... Great post and I hope when they re-invent the turntable, it will read with a laser.
