There are some positive definitions for that word, but coming from you, I expect you mean a trouble-maker who enjoys and deliberately seeks to cause trouble among people. No, that's not me. Since you've made it all so personal (wow, you REALLY don't want to think about what the Bushies are doing!), here's the pattern I've seen over the years: you talk about politics and usually people ignore whatever you've said, and when being ignored goes on too long (for you) you write something outrageous and slyly insulting that a few people disagree with, and then you get all "poor me" about it and make lots of excuses for whatever you said, and in that weird swirl of confusion, people take sides and end up upset for unclear reasons, and then people say it's because the subject is politics. You're free to get that pattern started if it works for you (although I'm not sure exactly what you get from it; it's so destructive). Of course, I could be completely wrong about all this, but I've seen the pattern so many times (sometimes with people instantly ferociously angry toward you), I don't think I'm wrong about what I see happening. It's a weird dynamic. At least this time it was a short-lived low-temperature swirl of confusion. > You have > every free choice and right to be that way but you > are not entitled to > demanding responses from people who do not agree > with everything you say. Well, like I said you've got nothing to counter all those horrible things the Bushies are doing. I wish you did. Facts are facts are facts. Of course you do not have to answer. So, don't answer and leave it at that. Dismissing facts as mere opinions so you don't have to consider any of it tells me a lot about you. That's all. I'm not interested in fighting either. That protecting business interests is more important than protecting the environment and workers' rights and a livable minimum wage. That it is acceptable to discriminate against homosexuals because they are 'choosing' an unacceptable 'lifestyle', and that by denying that homosexuals are born that way enables you to maintain your ugly prejudice. That the anti-choice position is acceptable, knowing full-well that women who can afford to travel to more 'enlightened and freer' countries to have their 'problem' taken care of, while those without those means will suffer and die trying to do it themselves. That it is preferable to have a profit-based healthcare system that benefits only the HMOs, the insurance lobby and those who can afford it at the expense of those who cannot afford it. Not to mention the support of the pharmceutical industry's profit-based system (the most profitable industry in the history of the world), which leaves untold numbers of elderly Americans who, while living on fixed incomes, have to choose between food, medicine or other necessities to stay alive, all in an effort to maintain that healthcare is not a basic human right, but a privilege for only those who can afford it. Just a few reasons why I think that Republicans and those in the conservative movement are just a mean-spirited bunch of greedy cocksuckers, and unworthy of being considered 'my friends'. Given the fact that, to enable the whole world to live at our standard of living would require the resources of SIX earths, the words of Karl Marx never rang truer: "There is enough for everyone's need, not everyone's greed". What I have seen here is that Kakki gets a lot of flak for being a Republican in her thinking and much of what liberals here find bad about this administration are transferred onto her. Have read her called nasty, whiney, and insulting and more or less: simplistic, smug, self-serving, and annoying. Then she was accused of making things personal. I did read where she wrote that some were provocateurs which I wouldn't consider an insult but that is only my opinion. Others have written that this is all senseless bickering. I suppose it wouldn't be so senseless if it involved something they were interested in discussing. Some post endlessly and are often told how wonderful and insightful their posts were which is not always the case in this head. Kakki has always, in my opinion, posted well and been very informative and I have yet to see her be mean spirited in her intent which cannot be said for some of the responses to her which I found pointedly so. Her politics are hers and her opinions are as well. The Democratic party has been guilty of each and every dirty trick that the Republican party has committed. I loathe George Bush but I only get one vote. He admits he was more Democrat before he got a high paying job. See, that's what happens! Money enters the picture, and an increase in pay isn't enough: the moneymaker wants to keep MORE of it! ALL of it!! Greed begets more greed, etc. Not saying that's necessarily the case with your husband, but I've seen it happen time and time again. That's why we have all the jokes about what's become of old hippies. That's why something like a used bookstore starts out as a wonderful concept ... the idea of sharing with others who want to own books but can't afford to pay full price ... but then the store adds another location and another ... and pretty soon it's a corporation and the owners get greedy and switch political parties because they think doing so is going to save them money (line their pockets) ... and they lose their souls in the process because now they really don't care about the things they started out caring about. (As I write this, Half Price Books comes to mind. I know a bit about it, as several friends worked for a couple of the Texas stores, and they worked for the president and others who were close to the top in that company. There's not only greed but nepotism going on there; it's sad to see.) As for people voting differently than their heart would tell them to vote, I have the opposite problem: my brother (who was born and raised and lives in Ohio) votes Democrat because he belongs to the Sheet Metal Worker's International Union. But, other than the fact that his views on reproductive rights are pro-choice, he has admitted to me that if he weren't a "Union brother" he would probably be a Republican. This has to do with his various bigoted beliefs and opinions. Everytime I think of it, I thank the Union for keeping my brother on the right path. > We've been sleeping together now for over 20 years and have grown closer and > closer together over the years. Hopefully, Hillary will be doing her second term by then. Good luck on both of those counts, Laura. First, too many of the Harley owners I know (except for most LGBT riders) are pretty conservative, since they have to be able to afford $20,000 or more for the bike to begin with ('cause you know they ain't gonna ride an 883 or a 1200; they've gotta have a big-assed HOG). Factually, in my life, most of the Harley owners I know (except for my LGBT friends and my brother the Union man) are Republican. (It's part of the reason I'm having a helluva time getting signatures on my "Boycott Sturgis!" petition, http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/141388669) Second, this will probably not be a popular opinion here, but I'll share it anyway: as much as I would like to see Hillary have a turn at the presidency, I think the worst thing that could happen right now would be for her to run. There are enough Democrats who so dislike her, it would absolutely split the party and we'd end up with another Repub for president. Not to mention the muckraking that would take place, which far exceed anything we've experienced to date. I do think it would be interesting to see Hillary and Condi run against each other, because THAT would create some really interesting splits! (However, the budget for Secret Service protection for them would go through the roof!!) I hope Kakki keeps posting, too, although I'm going back to not reading her political opinions, and hope the next time she expresses her "I love my country and you don't" attitude (however it comes out), I'll just roll my eyes and think, oh that Kakki! If I didn't see the same attitude in the Repubs now running and hurting the country, it probably wouldn't bother me at all that Kakki appears to be open to ideas but isn't really, and when challenged, rather than talk about those issues, gets offensive toward anyone who brings them up. That ignore the message and attack the messenger tactic puts a halt to all honest, thought-provoking, problem-solving communication. It's minor when it happens on a discussion list. Listen to the Repubs in Congress for two seconds and the way they blame everything on the Democrats (even though the Repubs are now in charge of all three branches of government!), and you hear that same scenario played out. Meanwhile the not-talked-about-honestly problems get bigger and bigger. I agree with you that the list loses much when Kakki is away. Debra Shea, in NYC Tired of spam? Yahoo! Similarly, very liberal Dems are angry at Hillary at starting on and staying on the wrong side of the Iraq issue. While I think it's purely manipulative behavior on her part to avoid being painted as 'soft on security' come 2008, it's not a stance that is endearing her to Democrats. She's probably more of a 'divider' than Bush. Plus, history tells us that Senators don't win Preidential elections, Governors do. I'm hoping that Mark Warner is the nominee for 2008, and that Bob Shrum (O for 8 in campaigns, why do they keep using him?) has NOTHING to do with his campaign. Let's also hope that the electronic voting machines are at least investigated, I'm not a conspiracy guy but all the evidence points to the fact that paperless voting may lack some integrity (putting it pretty mildly). I'm sure they'd love it (for all the reasons you listed). Granted, some of my Republican lesbian friends back down when it comes to fighting for their civil rights, or they pooh-pooh the idea that any candidate from either party will have any real impact on their lives, but not all do. Some people who surprise me by voting Republican do so because they think the Repubs will do more for the ... common good. It's a weird conundrum. Anyway, it ain't all black and white.
