What specifically are referring to? Although that is probably a loaded question that would turn into an endless and probably fruitless debate. They are not goals in the future or memories of a golden past. Those principals are what the country was founded on. AND they are written a thousand different ways into our laws, Federal and state. They are the "law of the land." Sure people may break those laws but they are upheld everyday in our courts all around the country. It's not just "jargon" - it is our basic law. People still discriminate against races, religions, political beliefs, freedom of speech but they are usually called on it and either asked to desist or prosecuted. The people who do discrimate in this way are not the majority and are considered repulsive by most in the country. "I have selected, but I think fairly, only a piece of your response and do not dispute anything in that is included here or omitted. I do not, and did not, claim these four countries are superior; but they are countries where there is a high degree of social welfare, a social fabric, high immigration of both unskilled and skilled workers and I would say (while not an expert here either) that these countries could make a good case to be a 'freer' (or at least 'equally free') place to live, thinking only about the right to practice religious beliefs, freedom of the press, a more open immigration policy and other indices of 'freedom'." No one country is superior, all have flaws, but some are more admirable and humanistic in their democracies. I think you might be able to argue that the European concept of freedom is somewhat different than the American concept. Not by too much, but there are differences. Doesn't make one superior to the other. What works for one country may not work for the other. I have no need to change another democratic country's system - just would like their respect for ours. " I have no doubt you have immigrant friends of all types and I have no doubt they are happy (why would they come/stay if they were not?), but living where you do you only see these people; what I'm saying is that there are people like this in many other countries too, such as the countries I mention. In other words, I think you are possibly extrapolating the positive situation you see onto a wider framework and this is preventing you from seeing that other countries have 'positive situations' too and I feel it may also be preventing you from seeing the negative aspects of what I believe is happening to the USA, as mentioned in recent posts here, notably by Debra and others." I was just saying we are positive in many ways and not all horrible and bad as some would love to believe. I can't speak to Debra and the others' opinions. They are set in their opinions and it serves no purpose to try to persuade them otherwise. They believe they are 1000 percent correct. But again it is just their opinions, interpretations and perceptions and not the end all and be all summary assessment of "what is happening in the USA." It is likely that, since Baum's in-laws were staunch abolitionists, they would have more loyalty to the Republican party (remember the party of Lincoln?) than the Democratic Party. As for Hollywood and Baum's Ozcot it is true that he became a dedicated southern Californian. Several of the later Oz novels were written at the Hotel del Coronado. Baum's mother-in-law Matilda Joslyn Gage was a radical feminist who coedited with Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony the first three volumes of the six-volume The History of Woman Suffrage (1881-1887). Her radicalism is perhaps why she is not better known: http://www.nps.gov/wori/gagebio.htm She was also the person who insisted that Frank write his stories for children down: http://www.matildajoslyngage.org/motherofoz.htm Frank's politics, in so far as we know them were mostly liberal He was particularly supportive of women's rights, though not above poking fun at suffragists--in the second Oz novel, General Jinjur and her All Girl Army (who wield knitting needles) conquer the men and make them do domestic chores but are relieved when "order" is restored because the men are such incompetent housekeepers. In any event, I constantly have to debunk the parable on populism as it's reached the status of urban legend by now. In any event, the best essay on the parable on populism question is this one: "The Rise and Fall of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz as a 'Parable on Populism,'" by David B. Parker published in the JOURNAL OF THE GEORGIA ASSOCIATION OF HISTORIANS, vol. 15 (1994), pp. 49-63. The 'friend' killed Jerry Lynn Dean in his bed with a hammer. Karla then took a pickax and bludgeoned Deborah Thornton to death with it, later telling friends the experience caused her to have a triple orgasm. I shed no tears for her when they killed her and have none today. And yet, even after admitting what she had done, she was allowed to live another 15 years. Too bad she wasn't as lenient with the murdered victims as the state of Texas was with her. Where is the song for Thornton? Karla Tucker was a murderer, a killer. I don't believe in forcing someone into believing the way I do..you know..in-your-face-type stuff. It will take time for people to come around and some NEVER. I accept that. Have a good day all... I guess I'm not really sure why this inconsistency between the audio/LP/CD release and the film is such a problem. I've always been able to enjoy both the audio and the video on their own separate terms. Maybe you know that both the album and the film were the result of a 5-concert stint at the Greek theatre in LA and a show in Santa Barbara, and the resulting albums and film is a combination of more than one show. She also performed "Last Time I Saw Richard" as an encore at some of those '79 shows, and they did "Big Yellow Taxi" as well. Neither is included on the CD/DVD. All that being said, there was a definite pattern to the setlists for that tour. I'll look over a couple of complete '79 shows I have and let you know what those setlists are. I would never assume to be an expert or all knowledgeable about what is happening in Spain or France or any country, even my own sometimes! But I would believe I know more as a native than someone who is not and who has no real experience of my country. INformed entirely with my very own most humble opinion; oh this one touches a nerve in me, perhaps because I feel the need to defend my own countryman ;-) Meic. (hail to wails ;-) ... Alas and alack. Must we qualify our opinions of the US by living IN the US? Wow. Full stop on that one. despite the fact that I am not an American, I did live there for a time, and did gain a certain perspective that I did not have prior to. (again, my humble opinion is informed by this Canadian's life on the inside). No, I am not saying that I know everything about America and how and why it works (ack, does anyone???) , but I sure as hell know a lot more than I did, and I can speak to that, especially paranoia as a tactic of control. No kidding Kakki, that you wouldnt have any knowlege of other countries, because there is little evidence within the walls of the US media of the existence, for example....of the country north of your own border, Canada. No kidding. I felt like I had moved to an entirely different planet. There was NO sense of what it is to "be" a Canadian, (from the natives ***your word*** )and yet all too often, everyone I met seemed to *know* inherently, what it was to "Be" Canadian. Not only to I beg to differ, I realise full well, that I digress. And speaking of your word, native, does this mean that....oh no....I'd best leave that kettle of fish alone. (calling Pandora) to make an assumption that Mike or anyone, cannot speak to the issues raised about the US is a bit curious to me. Does this mean that one can only talk about one's own direct experience within the country that one resides? ??? and have no comment about countries on the outside? . Oh , rest assured, whatever is going on IN the US of eh IS a big concern for those of us beyond its faire borders. Mags, knowing full well that I had left Kansas a LONG time ago, once I hit NY. I accept that. I don't accept it. The way things are now, "they" (those who oppose me marrying my partner Mary) are forcing THEIR beliefs on me! "They" can't seem to understand that their idea of marriage is not based on secular rights -- and they just can't separate their church and the state. And THAT is wrong. If "their" idea of marriage IS based on secular rights and not based on religious beliefs, then how is is possibly okay to deny me the same CIVIL right to marry that heterosexuals have? Things have come a long way for the LGBT community in the last couple of decades (well, more for lesbians and gays than for bisexuals and the transgendered, but that's another discussion). But things haven't come far enough, and I am damn tired of waiting. It's now affecting my pocketbook, as my new job allows domestic partner benefits but my partner and I take a tax hit her portion of the benefits. Not the case for married couples, who get a tax break. It's not a lot of money, but it's the principle of the thing and it pisses me off. It's not fair. It all comes down to some superstitious yahoos who insist upon shoving their "religion" down my throat. And to have you excuse that, Bree ... that doesn't sit well with me.
