The word caught on and was used a lot by the beat/bohemian writers from then on." Wow, I never knew that is what it meant. I remember the beatniks a bit from my early years and used to see them hanging out at some place on Cannery Row in Monterey in the late 50s. I always thought "beat" meant more like, as Belinda Carlisle would say, "we got the beat." Like they were dancing to the beat of their own drummer and also their readings and poetry had a vocalese feel. I also associated the vocalese music with the beats. It's almost like early rap. When I hear early Annie Ross and Jon Hendricks recordings and then today's Kurt Elling, I always think of the cool cats and hipsters of the 50s. I loved the Dobie Gillis show, especially Maynard and once for Halloween dressed up as a beatnik, all in black with heavy make-up and a long cigarette holder (with a candy cig). I was only 8. Today they's probably call Child Services on my parents LOL. I haven't heard that much Beatles on CD, but I would venture that the White Album, if no other, is in great need of remastering, equalising and whatever else can be done. I borrowed it from a friend a few years ago, and remember finding the sound quality horrible, especially on the quieter songs. When taping a couple of songs, I had to crank the recording level way, way up for Julia (incidentally, I think this is Lennon's loveliest song of all), with resultant massive tape hiss. Given that the entire back-catalogue has always been at full price, with no doubling up on the shorter albums, and is a guaranteed cash cow, I don't think it's too much to ask that some time and effort be put in to get something that sounds good. Beatles CDs are never on sale. But I never got around to buying any on CD except for Abbey Road. They really do need to remaster them and I would likely pay full price for that. I've still got my LPs that I've been carting around for years, but I'm moving (in three months). Do you suppose it's worth lugging them any further, or is this the end of the road? I can't imagine I'd get a lot of money trying to sell them, since I never treated them as objects of veneration to begin with and they've sat in my basement for years. Can any of you LP freaks (freakniks) tell me if there's any good reason I should hang onto them? If the jackets are good, maybe I could save the ones I like and frame them as artwork or something? Would it be worth trying to convert/dub them from LP to CDR or something? What would it take to do this and would the cost of purchasing whatever it is be worth it? and if I have a really crappy record player, would the crappiness of the record player transfer to the electronic version? One of America's leading historians assesses George W. Bush (note from me: Sean Wilentz is a professor of History at Princeton University) George W. Bush's presidency appears headed for colossal historical disgrace. Barring a cataclysmic event on the order of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, after which the public might rally around the White House once again, there seems to be little the administration can do to avoid being ranked on the lowest tier of U.S. presidents. But it's not really so much about us having the oil, as having a strategic position in the Middle East, to control the spigot. The Chinese want that oil, to, as does Europe, Russia, ....they will have to go through us. That's why Bush Inc. wants to invade Iran, and will if they can. The industrialized world runs on oil, and the PNAC has made it clear that they want to be in the dominant position. Two albums have already been remixed: Let It Be (naked) and Yellow Submarine Songtrack.* Both of them are sonically better. Both of them are mixed wrong to my ears, excepting a couple of songs. (Eleanor Rigby sounds freakin' incredible). The balance of instruments and vocals are off, like in "Think For Yourself" you can hardly hear the fuzz bass that was so prominent in the original, and "It's All Too Much" which has the usual double tracked vocal but they brought the wrong (weaker) one forward. I think the present CDs sound pretty dang good. Tape hiss? I can live with it. If it's on the masters, I'd rather have it than an algorhythm that removes it. On Abbey Road (I Want You) you can hear the buzz of the guitar amps on the quieter parts. Fine. The original mixes were inspired, and I'd rather they didn't let some guy in L.A. who wasn't even alive in the 60's remix them like they did with Let It Be. The White Album sounds great. Check out "Long Long Long", "Happiness is a Warm Gun"....Give me dirty and real over digital polish. My vote would be: remaster but don't remix. They never listen to me anyway. I would spring for 5.1 mixes of the later albums, though. RR, who just finished the new book by Beatles engineer Geoff Emerick, "Here There and Everywhere", and couldn't put it down. *actually, George Martin remixed Rubber Soul and Help in '87 when the CDs finally came out. > I haven't heard that much Beatles on CD, but I would venture that the > White > Album, if no other, is in great need of remastering, equalising and > whatever > else can be done. Dear American West Coasters, hoping I catch you in time: David Crosby and Graham Nash were just on the end of the Jay Leno Show. Hopefully you guys can catch them. I was asleep w/ the TV on 'sleep timer' and heard the names "David Crosby and Graham Nash' and sat up bolt upright. " I feel like I'm sleeping...can you wake me?" Yeah, they woke me! They were playing with David Gilmour (sp?), and the lyrics I heard were "Let the night surround you...." As the night surrounds me, I'm sending up this little prayer, hoping that at least one JMDLer can hear them...I'm going to scan my address book quickly and click on as many west coast names as I can find... Enjoy it if you get it! Love, Patti P., yawning ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Apr 2006 00:12:43 -0500 From: Michael Paz Subject: Holy Shit! (NJC) Sorry folks. Way behind cause we under siege with festival madness. Just got home and was undressing in the room and Dave Gilmour came on Leno with Croz and Graham and I thought I was on acid there for a minute. Beautiful song classic Gilmour slur and and licks and beautiful harmonies. They announced that you could check out a video of Wish You Were Hear on the NBC website/tonightshow but I couldn't find it. Hope all are well even you chronically sad sacks. Life is tooooo short to miserable! Tomorrow we recive 40 pianos for Katrinas Piano Fund to replace ones drowned in the storm. We plan to have 40 piano players playing New Orleans style piano a 12 noon. Hopefully the media will catch it.
