Enhanced usually means not only extra tracks, but can be played on a computer with CD-ROM extras. Many times those extras are fillers, such as on a DVD, but sometimes they can be valuable, like the possibility of interviews or commentary (from Joni?) about the recordings. And if they are remastered from the original using 32 bit technology the difference could be remarkable. The few 32 bit remasterings I own are incredible. They leap from the speakers. I thought the following article was good: Hippies Though the dictionary defines a hippie as anyone who rejects the conventional customs of society, in America the hippies were the product of the countercultural movements of the 1960s and 1970s. The word "hippie" is derived from "hipster," which was once a synonym for "beatnik." The beatniks (see entry under 1950sbPrint Culture in volume 3) of the 1950s were the spiritual ancestors of the hippies, who bloomed as the flower children of the 1960s and 1970s. Both groups shared intellectual curiosity, disdain for conventional customs and morals, affinity for recreational drugs, and tastes in music, literature, and philosophy that put them outside the mainstream. Although the term was sometimes applied too broadly (especially by the "straights," whose world the hippies scorned), hippies tended to be gentle people who embraced colorful clothing, nonpossessive sexual relationships, the use of marijuana (see entry under 1960sbThe Way We Lived in volume 4) and LSD, communal living, and a "live for today" philosophy. They generally rejected materialism, the Vietnam War (1954b75), the success ethic, and authority of all types. Their musical tastes favored the Grateful Dead (see entry under 1960sb Music in volume 4), Santana, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin (1943b1970), and Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar (1920b). (A sitar is a complex, difficult-to-play classical Indian instrument.) They were the core of what became known as the "counterculture." The "straight" world was interested in the hippies from the beginning. There were bus tours of San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district, billed as "the only place you can visit a foreign country without leaving the United States." Hippie images and references permeated the popular culture of the United States from the mid-1960s until the early 1970s. The most popular band in the world, the Beatles (see entry under 1960sbMusic in volume 4), "went hippie" with their Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album in 1967. "Psychedelic" art and music supposedly allowed one to experience the "mind-blowing" qualities of LSD without taking the drug itself. On Broadway (see entry under 1900sb Film and Theater in volume 1), the musical Hair (see entry under 1960sbFilm and Theater in volume 4) opened in 1968 to celebrate the hippie lifestyle with music, dance, and a show-stopping scene in which the entire cast stood naked onstage. Hippies appeared in films ranging from The President's Analyst (1967) to I Love You, Alice B. Toklas (1968) to Easy Rider (1969). They also became a frequent subject for humor on the popular TV show, Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In (1968b73; see entry under 1960sbTV and Radio in volume 4). The hippie culture gradually faded, as did the era that inspired it. But hippie images and references continued to appear. The characters of Cheech and Chong (Tommy Chong, 1938b; Cheech Marin, 1946b) were pothead hippie throwbacks in films like Up in Smoke (1978) and Still Smokin' (1983). The Grateful Dead (1965b95) still had a dedicated following that included many aging hippies, until the band broke up following the death of Jerry Garcia (1942b1995). In the 1990s and 2000s, the TV sitcom Dharma and Greg could always get an easy laugh with a reference to Dharma's "hippie parents." As the Grateful Dead used to sing, "What a long, strange trip it's been." For More Information Bisbort, Alan, and Parke Puterbaugh. Groovy, Man: Tripping through the Psychedelic Years. So I'll start with the word beatnik. Beatnik evolved from "beat". Kerouac, Ginsberg, Burroughs, and the boys first heard the word beat used in a new way by an unlikely person in Times Square in the 1940's. It was Herbert Huncke who was a junkie, had been in and out of jail, and just sort of hung around. As is true with so many words, it was used in different ways by people. To Kerouac and Ginsberg it meant exhausted, beatific, poor, or generally "beat down" by life itself. For Burroughs, a raging heroin/morphine addict himself, it meant to con, or steal, as in "I just beat that guy out of 20 bucks". The word caught on and was used a lot by the beat/bohemian writers from then on. On the Road was finally published in 1957, and that same year a Frisco writer named Herb Caen first borrowed the nik from sputnik and formed the word beatnik. It wasn't used so much to brand the beats as commies as it was to just put a catchy word in the column he was writing. The word beatnik, obviously, also caught on. Within a couple years Kerouac was being touted as the king of the beats, and beatniks, a label he was very uncomfortable with. He was also far from being a commie, and was in fact very patriotic. The most famous "beatnik" of course was Bob Denver (Gilligan) as he portrayed Maynard G. Krebbs in The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. The beats hated the show, and most other attempts to portray them in film, etc. Anyway, that's just a little on the word Beatnik. The word Hippie also has its roots in the Beat Generation. The Beats borrowed a lot of their words from what they heard in the jazz clubs and scene, and a really cool person, or good musician was called a hipster, or hip cat, or just hip. Some also credit Herb Caen as being the first one to use the word hippie, but Wikipedia says he only popularized it, and says it was first used by New York police and reporters to describe anti war protesters at the opening of the 1964 Worlds Fair. For me, the best one word definition of hippie is nonconformist. So that makes me a hippie, and proud of it. Freak was soon attached to hippie as a negative description, but that backfired, and we embraced the term. When I hear the term freak, it reminds me of the movie Woodstock. There is a part in the movie where one of the residents near the show is talking to one of those freaks, and asks him about the label. The kid responds that he is indeed a freak, and proud of it. So am I. As for the line in Carey, lets have a round for these freaks, and these soldiers, a round for these friends of mine, I'd like to think Joni was saying lets embrace, and be cool with everyone. Was/is Joni a hippie ? I guess it depends on your own interpretation of the word. She is a nonconformist for sure, and a person of peace. For me she is simply one of the most gifted artists of our time. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Apr 2006 10:11:05 -0400 From: "Marianne Rizzo" Subject: honesty Sherelle wrote: "Help Me I Think I'm Fallin...in love again...when I get that crazy feeling I know I'm in trouble again...I'm in trouble...cause your a rambler and a gambler and a sweet talkin ladies man..." I agree with Randy about the release of the 70's Joni albums in 5.1. The record biz has been going hog wild on "remastered" versions of old albums with outtakes to get you to buy your album collection again. In many cases the remasters are horrible sounding, and outtakes, which CAN be interesting, were left off the original albums for a reason. BUT if the labels went to the expense of baking the original multi-tracks and remixing the whole albums in 5.1, now that would be incredible. You would most likely hear things that you never heard in the stereo versions (including flubs ;) ). It is my belief, vinyl purists notwithstanding, that we live in a golden age of audio fidelity; I'm not talking about iPods and CDs but DVD-A and SACD. Most people don't know they exist (which is the fault of warring formats -VHS vs Beta anyone?) because sales of titles I read are a mere 1000 per year in the US. That's obviously a money loser for the labels, but I say get your surround thing going in your favorite room and enjoy the greatest audio experience before these formats disappear entirely. As I posted before, the Both Sides Now DVD-A is G- O-R-G-E-O-U-S! And please, on the TATTOO type of subjects put njc in your header. For some time now I've been thinking that re-releasing the classics with bonus material is the way to go -- rather than a seemingly endless series of compilations. I see the releases mentioned are all in the UK, perhaps the US release will come later (unless the whole thing is bogus! which I doubt). Let's hope the extra materials on the CDs are very worthwhile. Interesting that Blue is not included, but this group appears to focus on the mid-70s heyday/jazzy period. I think Blue -- which for several years now seems to have been considered by critics and the general public as the quintessential Joni Mitchell album and also seems to be the best seller among the catalog -- should be re-released on its own. Jim, do you not realize that Bush never, ever expected the things that have happened in Iraq to happen? No, it's not going well, but that has taken him by surprise. It's very much about the oil. Unfortunately for BushCo, the Iraqis didn't just roll over and play dead like was expected. I'm happy as a pig in mud that the Bathists (sp? also) or whomever are punching holes in production. GOOD. Americans need to get a grip on our disgusting overuse of oil (and other resources, for that matter). Even at $3.00 a gallon, what we pay at the pump is far less than what most of the rest of the world pays. I'm sorry if Americans who are poor are suffering because of gas prices. That sucks, because meanwhile the assholes who drive Hummers continue to guzzle fuel and not much changes. Perhaps the poor will rise up in revolt. One can only hope. I bought "The Essential Herbie Hancock" today. It's a fine introduction to an important artist but the 2nd disc lacks Mingus' "Goodbye Porkpie Hat". The sticker on the front says, "21 tracks" but the track list (on the back) counts to 20. You'll recall that several sites predicted an previously unreleased track with Joni singing. Then the release date was pushed back. When it was released, it lacked that track. I don't know who had that track pulled but I have a suspicion. The M.O. is familiar, eh?
