I would love to go and visit those pockets of counter-culture, as you called them, someday. It has always been my fantasy. You said it was all an invention. I used to think that hippies invented themselves. Was free love also an invention? Again, very interesting to read your post. I wonder who started the whole thing. In Israel hippies were called freaks (freakim, in Hebrew). Most of the freaks i knew became religious while others have simply gone insane. I wonder what Joni has to say about once being a hippie...VERY unlike her Bel-Air status these days, don't you think? Yours, Nuriel Randy Remote wrote: Hippies were a media invention designed to marginalize young people who were interested in new social and political paradigms. What's a hippie? A long haired person who takes drugs? (Hell's Angels, obviously not). A long- haired peace activist back to the lander? (Amish, no). It's like when they added 'nik' to the Beats-to associate them with communists (Sputnik etc). It's a catch-all label that means nothing. imo. As to what happened to those in the so-called 'counter-culture', sure, some became lawyers, some became drunks, some pioneered free clinics, started gay and female liberation movements, some went back to the land, you name it. Some ex-cokeheads became President, but you can't really generalize. Certainly all ex-cokeheads didn't do that. There are still pockets of 'counter-culture' in many places- Vermont, N. Cal., etc Wavy Gravy is celebrating his 70th birthday soon with a benefit show at the Berkeley Community Theatre (where Joni has performed). There's an ex "hippie" who has devoted his life to philanthropy. I got my first one @ a year ago, and as some have told me, they are somewhat addictive. I wanted mine to be unique, and not the ones picked from the wall of a tattoo parlor. So the first one I had a friend draw what I pictured in my mind. It is a peace sign, intertwined with a heart. The peace sign is in blue, and has several tears falling from it. The heart is in red, and is laced with barbed wire. Its on my right, lower inner arm. Once I saw it, I thought I should have on on my left arm in approx. the same place. I chose the cover of the Allman Brothers album, "Eat A Peach". On the album, on the side of the truck carrying the giant peach, it says "Allman Brothers Band". On my tattoo, in that place, it reads "Jessica", my daughters name, after the Allman's song of course......also the name of Dicky Betts' daughter who is the little girl on the cover of "Brothers & Sisters". Having these 2 are nice, but made start thinking of what I would get for a 3rd. Then it hit me as I drove in my car listening to the James & Joni BBC CD. Carey has always been one of my favorite songs, and the image of the Mermaid Cafe stuck in my mind. So I did a Google image search, and printed out a bunch of mermaid pictures. I brought them to my tattoo guy and told him what I wanted. What he came up with is a mermaid on a rocky shore and in the background is a well weathered wooden sign that says "CAFE". Not as obvious maybe as an actual name, or picture, but I am sure when it is done, I can show it to anyone on the JMDL and they will "get it". My only problem now is to decide what the next one will be........and the one after that....and.......sigh......... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Apr 2006 11:54:29 -0700 From: Randy Remote Subject: Re: Hippies Now and Then Nuri, if you ever get to Northern California, I would be glad to give you a tour! The term freaks is/was sometimes used in the US, too, mostly, I think, as a jokey self-reference. Joni used the term in "Carey": "Let's have a round for these freaks and these soldiers" I don't know about Joan herself being a hippie-she missed her "clean white linen and fancy french cologne" and high-tailed it to more posh digs- and in Boho Dance she seems to be saying it was more of a flirtation and inspiration for her than a genuine lifestyle. And by the time of HOSL she was embracing her inner rich rock star. But her head was always there. Today in America there is a segment of young people that are analgous to the hippies. They wear dreadlocks and listen to Reggae music and smoke weed, some are unemployed wanderers. As John Lennon once said, people are still taking trips to the cosmos. I don't think that will ever really stop, human curiousity and spiritual questing and all that. Free love was not an invention, but a temporary result of birth control pills and easy control of STDs, but ended when AIDS came on the scene (conspiracy theories, anyone?). As to who started the hippie thing, it was the CIA. I'm only sorta joking. Ken Kesey and others had their first taste of LSD when they volunteered for experimental drug testing (because they needed the money). The gov't was hoping that these drugs could be used for warfare/interrogation*, but eventually abondoned the idea. Kesey went on to form the Merry Pranksters, throwing public "acid tests" with free LSD (acid was legal until 1966) which begat the Grateful Dead and the hippie scene in San Francisco. In a broader sense, the Beat Movement of the 50's in SF and Greenwich Village NYC were precursors, and the bohemians of Europe before that, and this guy Jesus, and.....well, the cave men wore animal skins and didn't have jobs, and sometimes ate mushrooms and howled at the moon.... The news that Neil Young has a complete album in the bag shocked all of us at JamBase. On the heels of his very successful 2005 release, Prairie Wind and with his award-winning documentary Neil Young: Heart of Gold in theatres now, no one saw this coming. Filmmaker Jonathan Demme (who filmed Neil Young: Heart of Gold) recently sent an email stating; "Neil just finished writing and recording - with no warning - a new album called Living With War. It all happened in three days." Young has long worked under the "strike while the iron is hot" mentality, often working in creative spurts and never forcing it. Well, it seems the iron must have been burning bright for him to create a complete album in three days! As Katherine Silkaitis at Harp reported, Demme went on to say, "It is a brilliant electric assault, accompanied by a 100-voice choir, on Bush and the war in Iraq... Truly mind blowing. Will be in stores soon." Details are sketchy at best, but the featured song, "Impeach the President" contains Bush's voice accompanied by a choir chanting "flip/flop." NJC Follow me on this. By all reasonable estimations, Iran has produced a barely detectable amount of enriched uranium. They have made this stuff by spinning gasses very rapidly in a centrifuge. It's quick and cheap but very, very inefficient. They only have a detectable speck. They aren't even going to make a dirty bomb any century soon with fuel made in centrifuges. (The big boys use breeder reactors.) So, Iran is crowing to the world that they're a nuclear state, like Israel, India, Pakistan, China, the UK and the US. Everyone who reaches this point is proud of it. We need to let their moment pass as quietly as possible. A while back, Dubya was making veiled threats about considering "every option" to dissuade Iran from producing fuel for nuke-U-lar bombs. Please! Didn't he learn anything in Iraq? If I recall correctly, Dubya believed Hussein's rhetoric about stockpiles and capabilities. They turned out to be posturing, and now we're occupying Iraq. Fast forward to today. Iran is justifiably proud of their scientific achievement but Dubya's all over it like a bull on a red flag. He needs to let Dr. Rice make measured responses to questions about this and stay away from the microphones for a few more years. This is vital because every time he makes a veiled threat, or someone reports that the Pentagon tried to "walk back" the nuke-U-lar option in Iran and Dubya said "no", the price of crude oil spikes! And spikes again! This week the analysts are saying that "fear" is going to drive the price above Katrina values this summer. It's already nearly as high as it was after Katrina. He doesn't even have to commit troups- he's killing us at the pumps! If Lyndon Baines Johnson, from the great state of Texas, was alive today, I think he'd say, "Mr. President, please shut the hell up!" Why do you think it's bogus, Bob? Both of these dealers are legitimate, so they musy have been told by someone it's happening. It may not, of course, but there's real hope here. Keep in in mind, that 12.99 is in pounds, so that's 20 dollars or so in the usa, which seems realistic.
