The production of Eh Joe was unexpectedly amazing. A single muscle in Gambon's lined face signifies huge emotional impact. The voice that torments him seems to come from nowhere. Gambon cries exactly on cue. A slight gesture chilling every person watching. I have never seen anything like it on stage. I had seen the BBC version and also read the text and was worried that the transition to stage was nothing more than cashing in during a festival. It was well conceived and well executed. Afterwards Michael Gambon was down to earth, gentlemanly, humble. As if i wasn't looking forward to the next few Harry Potter movies already; now we are faced with the propect of watching Gambon, eh i mean Dumbledore, take a greater role;-) I was at a selection of readings on Friday. half of the sixteen readings were in French and half in English. The musicality mentioned in that article was apparent in both languages. How wonderful that the artist could be his own translater. A number of selections were read first in French and then in English. My grasp of French is very poor. I could catch words but no overall meaning, but the wordplay was still apparent. Thus, you've got Fairport Convention doing Eastern Rain, Chelsea Morning, Both Sides Now, etc as well as The Foggy Dew-O doing, Born To Take The Highway, Ian Campbell doing Dr. Junk & Circle Game, and so on. They may not have known Joni at the time, but they certainly knew good songs when they heard them. I'm not sure if Joni and the members of Fairport Convention spent any amount of time together while she was over there, if they saw her performances or vice versa. She was only on that side of the pond for about a month. Ian Matthews would go from Fairport to form Matthews' Southern Comfort and have a big hit with their version of Woodstock. He knew the Bible backward and forward, but had little use for the (mostly ignored) Levitical codes selectively cited by opponents of homosexual, civil and religious rights. In his view, they contradicted the far more important biblical message: God's expansive and unconditional love for humanity. People also listened to him because he made Christianity witty, quotable (he created Christian epigrams) and, more than anything else, full of joy. Where is today's Bill Coffin? Although no comparable liberal leader exists now, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of Coffin heirs all over this country. Wherever ministers or rabbis visit the sick and preach against the war in Iraq; wherever they baptize a baby and go on the radio to criticize tax cuts for the rich; wherever they preside at a wedding and then bring congregants to march for the right of gays and lesbians to marry - Coffin's spirit and example remain alive and well." http://www.courant.com/hc-coffin0416.artapr16,0,2015272.story if you want more.
