My first thought when it seemed that Cindy herself would be there was that singing a hymn in honor of her son would be just the right gift. Casey, who expected to be a military chaplain, would be comfortable with a hymn, and everyone singing together seems like a good idea. How about the song "Peace is flowing like a river"? It's a simple tune so even people who've never heard it can join in. The lead singer just says whatever the starting word is, Love is flowing like a river... Joy is... Hope is... It can be performed loud and fast or soft and prayerlike, or any combination, and can go on for as long as is appropriate. I've heard it performed as both a centerpiece song and a final one that emotionally joins everyone. Here's a sample of one person's version: http://www.singingforpeace.org/mp3/PeaceFlowingLikeARiver.mp3 There are other songs on this site, including ones about mothers: http://www.singingforpeace.org/songs.html so something on the list may be helpful to you. It came to pass Like lightening striking from above Electric flash Just like lightening striking from above I just thought of another! How about this one? Could you play this one, Kate? Hi Ron! Trips me out that you mention Terry! Terry and John, the Talbot brothers... I know them both. I don't know Terry as well as John. They are precious together, bring out each other's personalities when they perform. They formed Mason Proffit together. John was only about 16 I think. There is a lot of history about the band in John's biography Signatures. Yes, Mason Proffit is back together and touring. John claims to be the "silent" partner since he is a monk now at an integrated, monastic hermitage he founded called Little Portion. It is on land he bought while Mason Proffit was at a folk festival in Eureka Springs, Arkansas in the 70's I think. Terry hangs out at the monastery pretty often too. Their mother is buried on the land. I've been a member of the same community since 1987. Mason Proffit recently had a concert here. My friend Betty (who came with me to the 2004 fest at Full Moon) and I brought them here. They were awesome! I love Two Hangmen!! It is on their album Come and Gone. When the CD is 14 tracks and over an hour, it's a major bonus. And finally, and most importantly, when the song selections are unpredictable, the arrangements original and the caliber of talent as high as they are on this collection, it is sublime, as good as it gets. I've been enjoying this Ian Shaw CD for a couple of weeks now, thanks to the good folks at Linn Records who sent me a promotional copy. I was already familiar with Ian's voice and original style as he's done several other Joni songs in his career. For those of you who do not know his work, the closest comparison is Al Jarreau, with some Seal thrown into the mix. But at the end of the day, Ian is Ian and you can just feel him pouring himself into these songs, accompanied by stellar musicians who approach Joni's compositions with a similar passion. The arrangements (by Shaw & Janette Mason, who also plays piano) are fresh and original, an important issue when you're including some of the old standbys like Both Sides Now, A Case Of You, River, and Chelsea Morning. All of these catch a fresh spark from the arrangements and the variety of musical colors that Ian and producer Richard Cottle bring to the project; lots of piano and guitar, with accents of strings, brass, percussion, and even guest vocals by Claire Martin (who duets on Night Ride Home) & Lea De Laria (Harlem in Havana). While Ian's vocals are rightfully in the spotlight, there are numerous instrumentalists who also get to strut their stuff and it helps make EVERY track a standout, trumpet on Talk To Me, acoustic bass on Night Ride Home, Shorter-like soprano sax flourishes in River, percussion and strings intro to Barangrill, and so on. Adding to the joy for me is hearing so many seldom and never-covered Joni songs; Barangrill, Harlem In Havana, Stay In Touch, Talk To Me, Love Or Money, Edith and the Kingpin and others. Just as he does with Joni's "standards" Ian and company bring a unique and magical touch to all of these tracks. All he needs is two more songs and he's got a "Sweet 16" all on his own...
