Veterans For Peace has erected the memorial every Sunday for the last 21/2 years. The wooden crosses are pushed tightly together to fit along the stretch of sand near Stearns Wharf. Stephen Sherrill, one of the organizers for Veterans For Peace, told the crowd that 770 family members and friends from across the nation have come to pay tribute to their loved ones. "This has stood as a potent antidote to political spin because of its unusual reality," he said. "This is what the war lords in Washington are doing to our young men and women. . . . We will do everything in our power to stop them." Ms. Sheehan first drove to Santa Barbara from her Vacaville home on Mother's Day in 2004, about a month after her son was killed in Baghdad's Sadr City." >Oh my God, Kate. You have my heart on this one. (I'm crying, sorry.)< I know. I've been crying on & off all day thinking of this. I know it is so I won't cry when I actually perform. Hopefully. >Where Have All the Flowers Gone? Is that easy? Joan Baez played that at Camp Casey.< BRILLIANT! This is one of the first songs I ever learned. It is one I keep thinking I should be playing again & since JB played it at Camp Casey it is a perfect choice. Blessed are the blood relations of the young ones who have died, who had not the time or patience to carry on this earthly ride. My favorite Joni item, I would have to say was the opportunity to photograph two concerts for Wally when he was to ill to make it. They have been my greatest accomplishments in this life because I loved Joni at 15 in 1968 and to get to do that and to meet her and find out what a great person she is. I will always hold dear the evening at the Mendal Art Exhibit opening when she and her friends hung around Ashara, David ,Jim, and me as she signed everyone's book She even signed one for Jimmy because it was his birthday that day. Also got Sonya Kitchell, sounds like a Josh Stone and Nora Jones cross. But defiantly not as good as Joni's first album. I don't think any one will come close to me as a Joni match. And he's fighting for Democracy, He's fighting for the Reds, He says it's for the peace of all. He's the one who must decide, Who's to live and who's to die, And he never sees the writing on the wall. But without him, How would Hitler have condemned him at Dachau? Without him Caesar would have stood alone, He's the one who gives his body As a weapon of the war, And without him all this killing can't go on. He's the Universal Soldier and he really is to blame, His orders come from far away no more, They come from here and there and you and me, And, brothers, can't you see, This is not the way we put the end to war. . He had engineered a number of their recording sessions. I had a rare opportunity to meet him, which I missed, and I will always regret that. I've always heard first-hand, only wonderful things about the man. He shares the same date of death as another of my musical loves, Laura Nyro (April 8, 1997). (be the peace ala Gandhi) Sherelle you nailed it when you wrote "Give them songs of love and hope as well as comfort." That is exactly what I am reaching for (perhaps some of my emotion over this is because my dear nephew who is in the airforce will soon be deployed to 'the desert' leaving his young wife & baby girl)... Thank you all for indulging me in this quest... it is always remarkable to me to be able to put out a request like this & get such incredible feedback ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Apr 2006 21:23:21 -0700 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: anti war songs njc >I guess the echos of southeast Asia are inevitable. Joni must be having a hard time right now. First Don Alias and then Henry. Two people who surely had significant places in her life and in her art. It's hard when good friends pass away and to lose two so close together has to be very sad for Joni. My thoughts are with her and all of those these two people touched.
