During our fall break late last year I went to NYC to visit my ex-girlfriend who helps manage a family business (we hang out still as much as we can -- long story). I was able to catch the Cabaret Convention at Lincoln Center one night where they featured around 12 or so singers. I did a mini review of that evening's show here in the List and in some obscure online journal. About a month ago I got a nice email from one of the singers who I said I like very much. Her name is Adi Braun and the Canadians in this List may know of her. She sang two songs that night -- I think a cover of one of Gordon Lightfoot's songs. She told me she was grateful for the nice words I said about her and we exchanged an email or two. One of my suggestions to her is to cover a Joni song and she said she will think about it in the future. It would be a delight to listen to her voice give a different spin to Joni's songs. So there, maybe in the near future we will be hearing a version from her. Can't wait! I got a chance to attend to a singer named Mishka Adams of Filipino-British parentage, last summer when I was in Manila. I asked her if she ever considered covering a Joni song and her beautiful face lit and told me she liked Joni's "Shadows and Light" album very much. She is now in the UK doing music studies. Last night I listened to an up and coming jazz singer named Sara Gazarek. As some of you know, Sara covered Joni's "The Circle Game" in her fabulous 2005 debut album called "Yours". And it may also be because middle children feel they have to "play both sides" and if you're writing instead of talking off the top of your head, it's easier to do that. Just a thought. Another thing that trips me up sometimes when talking versus writing is that I tend to get distracted by all sorts of visual clues so my thinking isn't as focused as it can be when writing. My brain is much better at processing visual information than aural, so I have to really concentrate when I'm listening. And that gets tiring. Things I see just flow in with no effort. So maybe those "brain wiring" things are part of you, too, Catherine. Since you mentioned birth order... that has a huge influence on people's behavior. Or so it seems to me lately when I find myself telling people way more than they ever wanted to know about something. Or getting into "teaching" mode, or speechifying mode, even if they're not interested in what I'm saying. It's me doing a "here's how you tie your shoes", "this is how you say that word", "sure, read me (or vice versa) that book again", "of course, I'll help you with that" ... to siblings much younger, and they adored me for that kind of thing! Now that we're all adults, they've helped me unlearn some of my "I know and you don't so I'll teach you" behavior because it really gets on their nerves. Hasn't been easy. And when the going gets rough, I'm still the oldest child and they still expect me to lead the way. So, for good or bad, all that old learning is part of me. All this became more obvious to me recently when a new co-worker was giving me a speech about something that I already knew all about since I'd been working at the place for much longer than she had. I said "I know" and "yes" a couple of times trying to get her to stop and she just kept on going. I finally interrupted her and asked if she is an oldest child. Turns out she is. And she got all red-faced about it, which I didn't understand because a person can't help what their birth order is, but maybe she was embarrassed because it showed so clearly. Anyway, her embarrassment passed, and she stopped giving a speech, that time. She still does it, but now I find it funny. And I'm more aware of when I might be doing the same thing. Doesn't keep me from doing it, though, if it's an emotional topic. But I can see why it might get on some people's nerves. People who are a "youngest child" probably wouldn't get nearly as annoyed listening to me as another "oldest child" would because their former willingness to follow and learn from someone who has (or seems to have) the knowledge kicks in. Funny, huh? There's no getting away, completely, from those early years. Debra Shea, in NYC _________________________________________________________________ Dont just search. Find. A few of the CD's credit the song to The Crows as opposed to Joni. If I'm not mistaken, it's their biggest hit thus far, pretty ironic as it was a hidden track on Hard Candy to start with. Bob< interesting. . I think I should play this in class. . a lot. . . and then play joni's version back to back a lot Bob, I know we have the counting crows version on one of your cover cd's. Do you remember which one? I hope I get my act together on this. Marianne _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! But we both agreed ..whether from the written page or in person..your warmth..down-to- earthiness comes through. _________________________________________________________________ On the road to retirement?
