VLJC Hi gang! In case your curious about some of the artists I listed in my top 20 singer/songwriters, I thought I'd give you all a taste. Here's a track from Katie Noonan. She is classically trained but, made her name in Australia with the band, george. The single, Special Ones was a huge hit here. This track is from her other project band, Elixir. The song is Before You Sleep. As far as I know, she has not yet recorded a Joni cover but I am hoping one day she will. Her style is a mix of folk/rock/jazz. Her voice would suit several Joni songs. I would prefer to keep it Joni-related only. For me, this means Joni and musicians who are CLOSELY related to her. For example, the sad news on Don Alias was something we all needed to hear. I know some will think "anyone who likes Joni will like this", but that's, I suspect, never true. I think the recent "singer" poll showed how wide ranging the likes on this list are, but probably the dislikes as well. There were a lot of singers on that list, some who scored pretty high, that I couldn't listen to for 2 minutes, but so what? We all have Joni Mitchell in common. I'll end by saying that the only reason I'm on "Joni only" has to do with time. If I find myself getting a lot more messages and many are on people I could care less about, I'll probably start deleting too freely and miss some of what I'm here for. I, too like this Scandinavian duo too. There is something about their singing that evokes a lullabye without vibrato or an unfinished thought. I got to know them via their "Quiet is the New Loud" album and has since collected their other albums. There is also an interesting solo effort from Erlend Oye (the gangly one with glasses) with a trance-like techno feel to it. One of their tracks from their QITNL album is called "Singing Softly to Me" which resurfaced in the later track "The Girl from Back Then". I like the way they use a musical motif again within the same album. It is very cinematic, no? As though the main theme gets fresh coats of paint in succeeding tracks. Highly recommended. Speaking of that type of music, have you all seen this Icelandic film "Noi Albinoi"? It was released in 2004 in the US but may have been going around festivals in Europe prior to that. It features a very typical life of a teenager wanting to leave his mountainous village and seek the ocean. Anyway, there are very very quiet moments in the film where the character is alone with himself and the music used sounded like Sigur Ros or The Kings of Convenience. Forgot if it is diegetic music for he did listen to them in the context of the film but I thought the music was also used to score his inner feelings (hi Mike P.). During our fall break late last year I went to NYC to visit my ex-girlfriend who helps manage a family business (we hang out still as much as we can -- long story). I was able to catch the Cabaret Convention at Lincoln Center one night where they featured around 12 or so singers. I did a mini review of that evening's show here in the List and in some obscure online journal. About a month ago I got a nice email from one of the singers who I said I like very much. Her name is Adi Braun and the Canadians in this List may know of her. She sang two songs that night -- I think a cover of one of Gordon Lightfoot's songs. She told me she was grateful for the nice words I said about her and we exchanged an email or two. One of my suggestions to her is to cover a Joni song and she said she will think about it in the future. It would be a delight to listen to her voice give a different spin to Joni's songs. So there, maybe in the near future we will be hearing a version from her. Can't wait! I got a chance to attend to a singer named Mishka Adams of Filipino-British parentage, last summer when I was in Manila. I asked her if she ever considered covering a Joni song and her beautiful face lit and told me she liked Joni's "Shadows and Light" album very much. She is now in the UK doing music studies. Last night I listened to an up and coming jazz singer named Sara Gazarek. As some of you know, Sara covered Joni's "The Circle Game" in her fabulous 2005 debut album called "Yours". Listening to her last night in the drkness of my room, I must say that she imbued TCG with a new insight. Either that or the fact that the absence of light made me pay more attention to her voice than when lights are on. For the most part she mainly stuck to the song's familiar melodic line but she also changed dynamics here and phrased it differently there. At times she reminds you of the huskiness of a Jane Monheit and the clear-toned beauty of Karrin Allyson -- excellent contemporary jazz singers who both covered Joni more than once. I have to say though that when Sara (like most singers singing TCG) sings the part "Yesterday a child came out to wonder". The way the word "wonder" is phrased ALWAYS reminds me of Joni's particular way of phrasing that word. Like "wond-derrrr" with a trembling vibrato in the end. It sounds very sexy to my ears. Yeah....I was in the very last row of the Berkeley Community Theater, and was sure I could see her nipple poking out of her dress as she played. For years I wondered about that, but it was confirmed by another lister who was there, RellieA, who sent me the following: "Joni accidentally exposed her breast when she put her guitar strap over her head and started playing. I can't remember which song she was playing but I'll never forget the moment David yanked the binoculars from my hands and couldn't believe his good fortune. As a female musician I can only imagine how embarrassing it must have been for Joni to have played an entire song 'exposed' onstage like that." This was in March of '74, if memory serves, and kind of amazing it wasn't caught on film (or maybe it was). Also, at the risk of sounding like a total perv, you can see the edge of her areola in some of the bikini photos from the HOSL sessions that yielded the shot on the inside of the gatefold. The songbook for HOSL has them. RR, who notices these things ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Apr 2006 11:50:48 -0700 From: "Lori Fye" Subject: Re: Joni only, or all posts about music? And it may also be because middle children feel they have to "play both sides" and if you're writing instead of talking off the top of your head, it's easier to do that. Just a thought. Another thing that trips me up sometimes when talking versus writing is that I tend to get distracted by all sorts of visual clues so my thinking isn't as focused as it can be when writing. My brain is much better at processing visual information than aural, so I have to really concentrate when I'm listening. And that gets tiring. Things I see just flow in with no effort. So maybe those "brain wiring" things are part of you, too, Catherine. Since you mentioned birth order... that has a huge influence on people's behavior. Or so it seems to me lately when I find myself telling people way more than they ever wanted to know about something. Or getting into "teaching" mode, or speechifying mode, even if they're not interested in what I'm saying. It's me doing a "here's how you tie your shoes", "this is how you say that word", "sure, read me (or vice versa) that book again", "of course, I'll help you with that" ... to siblings much younger, and they adored me for that kind of thing! Now that we're all adults, they've helped me unlearn some of my "I know and you don't so I'll teach you" behavior because it really gets on their nerves. Hasn't been easy. And when the going gets rough, I'm still the oldest child and they still expect me to lead the way. So, for good or bad, all that old learning is part of me. All this became more obvious to me recently when a new co-worker was giving me a speech about something that I already knew all about since I'd been working at the place for much longer than she had. I said "I know" and "yes" a couple of times trying to get her to stop and she just kept on going. I finally interrupted her and asked if she is an oldest child. Turns out she is. And she got all red-faced about it, which I didn't understand because a person can't help what their birth order is, but maybe she was embarrassed because it showed so clearly. Anyway, her embarrassment passed, and she stopped giving a speech, that time. She still does it, but now I find it funny. And I'm more aware of when I might be doing the same thing. Doesn't keep me from doing it, though, if it's an emotional topic. But I can see why it might get on some people's nerves. People who are a "youngest child" probably wouldn't get nearly as annoyed listening to me as another "oldest child" would because their former willingness to follow and learn from someone who has (or seems to have) the knowledge kicks in. Funny, huh? There's no getting away, completely, from those early years. Debra Shea, in NYC Tired of spam? Yahoo! I think she said I was barely walking? I also have an intrepid spirit...no fears about anything...what will be will be. This could come from my older brothers and sisters prodding me to do something and wanting to fit in. Sometimes it's difficult for me to make a decision..I vacillate more than I should.
