I watched most of the video and won't say what I really thought. Let's forget that some think Bush is evil and Hitler and some think he is not. Please answer me this to enlighten me. Osama attacked us throughout the 90s. We all remember that, right? Clinton was constantly warning us about him and even launched a few cruise missiles to try to take him out. Osama appeared on a video taking full credit for 9/11. Moussaui recently confessed to the plot. Hundreds of other Al Queda have been caught and and told about various plots. They have also made a number of videos telling us they want us dead and threatenting more attacks. There is video of airplanes, not missiles, going into the twin towers. There are eye witnesses to an airplane, not a missile, going into the Pentagon. There are numerous family members of victims who called from the airplanes on their cell phones saying they were hijacked and flying into the Pentagon, etc. So all of these videos and accounts from family members are all an illusion? Or were they all part of Bush's plan? How can people discount videos, history and eye and ear witness accounts and believe in these concoctions? Some of the stuff in the video linked is just ludicrous to people who have worked in the defense industry. I'm sorry but I think that people are so disillusioned that they want to believe anything to back up their own disillusionment. Why? On some Canadian cable channel???? >> Had to chime in on this, Jerry: have you seen Last Night, Don McKellar's totally wonderful film on the subject of what we would do if there were only a few hours left before the end of the world? It's a unique film, full of droll humour and unforced poignancy. Highlights include David Cronenberg as the head of a gas company who spends the last day phoning all the company's customers and assuring them that the company will continue to provide power "right up to the end"! DL ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Apr 2006 04:24:58 -0800 (PST) From: Bob Muller Subject: Joni Covers Volume 75 - Diamonds On My Windshield It's a diamond anniversary of sorts...after all, the 75th anniversary is known as the Diamond anniversary, and the baseball season kicks off this month and they play on a diamond, plus the songs on this compilation are so sharp they can cut glass! Well, not all of them, but to be sure there are many many shiny joo-wels to be found in this month's edition of Joni Mitchell covers. As is my custom, I offer my heartfelt gratitude to the good folks who helped me round these up: Catherine McKay Les Irvin (I will follow up with a link to the tunes - for some reason the one that I had isn't working) Thanks y'all - now let's get on with the listening & yakking: 1. Bruce Radtke Jazz Trio - The Circle Game: The first of 5 Circle Games on V75, and interesting because each of them is so different. New York based Bruce Radtke Jazz Trio (guitar, bass, drums) utilizes a really different arrangement, very exploratory and unique. And with a running time of almost eight minutes, they definitely enjoy stretching out a bit. It actually takes a couple of listens to pick out the melody, and it definitely rewards repeated listens. 2. Amelia Browning - The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines: A Southern California jazz vocalist, Amelia brings a nice degree of bass-heavy funk to her cover of Dry Cleaner and navigates the tricky melody with ease. 3. Bill Kaffenberger - Urge For Going: While I usually always enjoy UFG covers, this one has way too much echo on the vocal and employs what sounds like a pre-programmed drum and bass track that gives it a very canned feel. Plus he messes up the words, and that's a criminal offense with what I consider to be one of Joni's most poetic songs. It sounds like he's going for a Roger McGuinn sorta thing with his voice and guitar...swing and a miss. 4. Erana Clark - The Circle Game: From Auckland, New Zealand, Erana started singing in talent shows as a child and pretty much grew up in the show business life. She's now a vocal coach on "Australian Idol". She's certainly got a nice voice and puts it to good use in this spirited and pop-flavored 1973 recording. 5. Celia Slattery - Both Sides Now: Boston area cabaret singer & performer, Celia's take on the franchise is smooth and well-done, and the arrangement has some really nice twists to it, including a background choral chant that recalls "Life In A Northern Town". I like it a lot - maybe I'm pouring it on too thick, but like they say, Slattery will get you everywhere! 6. Sarah Slean - Woodstock (live): An unreleased live recording, Sarah (a Toronto-area singer-songwriter) channels Tori Amos on this one. 7. Jennifer Scott - Free Man In Paris: A very fresh take on the Court and Spark standard - loose and jazzy, and the intro recalls Steely Dan's "Home At Last". A wonderful band, fun swinging solos, an outstanding tune - what more could you ask for? And again, they take their time, stretch out and sound like they're really enjoying it. 8. Jennifer Scott - You Dream Flat Tires: Jennifer scores a two-for-two with one of my fave WTRF songs, and a not-often covered one at that. Her vocal is right on, and the arrangement swings and features excellent players, including a smooth, velvety sax solo - she takes it in a great Steely Dan-ish jazz direction, moreso than Joni did. 9. Robin James - Circle Game Medley: This reminds me of when I was in Elementary and on Thursdays the "Music Lady" would come to our class and play the piano and sing. This is an interesting medley but the singing is too didactic for my tastes. 10. The Escape Committee - Woodstock: Hailing from Warrington, Cheshire in the UK, these guys like to get out and rock out in the pubs and such and pull out all the classic chestnuts. They're pretty tight and the guitarists can wail. This one takes the CSNY cover and makes a nice jam ala Skynyrd and Free Bird-style. 11. Rita Chao - The Circle Game (Mandarin): I love the foreign language covers, and lovely Rita sings it Mandarin. 12. Cyril Ornadel Orchestra - Woodstock: Cheesy but fun, sounds like the background music they'd play in a 70's spy movie or detective show when the good guys are on the run from the evil agents. A real variety of sonic devices including a pizzicato string chorus and some righteous fuzztone electric guitar. Makes me wanna do the frug! 13. Wheatones - I Don't Know Where I Stand: Early recording (1978) from the ladies of Wheaton College, this one is interesting because they employ a nearly different melody than what Joni wrote. Nice harmonies though. 14. Tom Young - Both Sides Now: A lovely and intimate instrumental. 15. Cherry Boys - The Circle Game: And those Circles keep going round and round and round and round. The fifth CG in this compilation is an instrumental that features a Duane Eddy-style "twangy" guitar and uses the Agnes Chan arrangement. 16. Stephen Fretwell - Rainy Night House: A pleasant surprise, this live in-studio performance was from 2005 and was only available as a B-side to his single release of "Emily". Stephen is an English singer-songwriter, and given that he's only 20-something I hope to hear more Joni covers from him before he's done. 17. Lynn Skinner - Help Me: Many of us got the chance to hear Lynn in NYC this year, the uber-talented Colorado-based jazz singer and vocal teacher does Help Me in a lovely samba-style. Given her vocal range and talent, and those of her supporting musicians, it makes for a great listen. And at over 6-1/2 minutes, there's some nice solo-ing and time for the players to get into it. 18. Cadence - The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines: More Toronto-based talent. Acapella, with amazingly creative vocals and harmonies. This one almost makes my jaw drop, I am truly in awe of their talents. The more you listen to it, the more you hear. And that's it - not too many clunkers this month, and once again recordings that span the globe, the years, the genres, and the genius that is Joni Mitchell. I'll be back in a month with a fresh batch, and may even have a surprise or two as the month rolls on. Bob NP: John Hiatt, "You Must Go" Tired of spam? Yahoo! You'd probably have to say pre 1958, which is when her vocal problems began. This is when Callas started her highly publicized affair with Onassis, and little by little, stopped studying and singing. Her performances became fewer and far between - and like an athlete, you lose it, if you don't keep in shape. Regardless, her interpretations were even deeper, even if her voice couldn't handle the pressure anymore. She didn't sing at all between 1965, and when she returned for that last tour in 73/74, so there was very little left of her voice at that point. Someone wrote of Callas, those that ride the tiger, never get off - and even in 73, she still gave everything she had, even though there wasn't much left to give it with. To keep this on topic, Joni's voice just became deeper, like most voices do with age. She didn't get a big wobble in her voice, and was never a loud singer to begin with. - - Scott ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Apr 2006 08:28:12 -0500 (EST) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Why are birds are active at night?, njc - --- "Jim L'Hommedieu, Lama" wrote: > Cat, > > I was reading up on weather radar when I found this: > > >Echoes from migrating birds regularly appear during > nighttime hours between > late February and late May, and again from August > through early November.> > > So, I think they migrate at night. > > Jim > > They have to. Your points about Al Queda are well taken, Kakki, there is plenty of evidence that these people were on a mission to strike the U.S. There are some gaping holes, no pun intended: for instance, in the case of the Pentagon strike, this is the most restricted airspace in the world, literally a specially protected zone within another one. How can it be, in this world of cams everywhere, that there is no footage of the plane? How could the highjacked planes get that far in the first place? Why won't the gov't release the black boxes? What are they hiding? How did one of the terrorists' passport survive an explosion/fire that melted steel, and pulverized everything to a fine dust (at the WTC). Why did WTC 7 collapse at all? It wasn't hit by anything, and other buildings closer to the towers were not damaged. (side: it's been claimed that cel phones don't work at 3500 feet, the altitude of flight (73?). Don't know if this is true). The other thing is, even if the theories are true, and a secret Cheney-led cabal purposely caused 9/11, we will never find out, any more than we will ever find out who killed JFK. The same gov't has enough influence over the means of propaganda to cast doubt and derision on the "conspiracy nuts". And while I'm glad there are people out there probing these vexing questions, doesn't it divert us from the glaringly obvious; that this administration virtually put the money on the front window sill and left the front door open, allowing 9/11 to happen, by putting into effect what Al Franken aptly called "Operation Ignore"? That they had their sites on Iraq long ago and led us into an immoral and illegal war based on lies? That they have helped Haliburton etc to loot the defense coffers, and that they have clearly expressed their desire for military-based world and space domination, beginning with the mobilization of the populace through a "new Pearl Harbor" as expressed in the manifestos of the Project For A New American Century? My point is that there are plenty of *obvious* reasons why this administration is out of control, that their actions are actually fomenting more terrorism, bankrupting our country, and ruining our global image. We don't need to waste energy on things that will never see the light of day, when so much is so clear. RR - ----- Original Message ----- From: > O.K. What I can't get out of my head is recently learning that Dick Cheney asked William Cohen, the Secretary of Defense in Clinton's administration, for a briefing on one country: Iraq. Only Iraq. Cheney asked for that briefing in December 2000, right after the Supreme Court put Bush/Cheney in power. Cheney, who was supposed to find a good vice presidential running mate for Bush and who chose himself for the job, had no interest in learning about any other country. Then, the following Spring he held the secret energy conferences, and the Supreme Court has upheld Cheney's right to keep them secret. One bit of info that's been known for a long time is that the men in those meetings went over the map of Iraq. In April/May 2001. So, 9/11 was just what Cheney and his pals and his puppet needed. Cheney was evil long before 9/11. I keep hoping that one (or more) of the attendees of that energy conference gets so tired of not being able to sleep at night that he or they start letting the public know exactly what they were told. I haven't downloaded the video and could only get through half of the New York magazine article, so don't know what mention was made of Cheney. On Bill Maher's show last night, Maher again talked about his anger at how Bush sat for 7 minutes after hearing America was attacked, and one of the guests said it was because Bush knew it was going to happen (exactly what Lori said!), and everyone else on the show instantly pooh-poohed that idea. We'll be hearing it more and more, though, I expect. Good. Debra Shea, in NYC Tired of spam? Yahoo! And thanks to Lori and Mark of the SF Chronicle. I'm aghast at what I saw in this documentary, of course, and the facts presented all appear authentic and well-researched and vetted. Obviously, no documentary or news report of any kind can be completely objective. There are *always* inherent biases. Lots of them. Not least among them is "bias of omission," which is absolutely unavoidable in any news or documentary-style account. This film is no exception. However, the issues raised and the evidence presented are compelling and believable. Moreover, I'm utterly pissed off, which should serve as a red flag when trying to engage in logical thought on any vital issue. Anger clouds judgment and is always the result of one or more of three emotions: hurt, fear and/or frustration. I am experiencing all of these vis a vis the Bush administration. I will have to learn to manage that. Trying hard to, even as I type. I'm determined to approach this extremely critical question of the veracity of the United States government logically, with a cool head, because the world itself is truly at stake. That said, here's what I believe to be an excellent primer on conspiracy theories re: 9/11, as linked in Morford's online article. Let's separate the wheat from the chaff and deal with reality if at all possible. It's interesting reading: http://nymag.com/news/features/16464/index.html I'd be interested in hearing thought if you get a chance to read this. - - -Julius Thank you, Julius. My thoughts exactly, only you expressed them better than I ever could. And thank you Lori, for posting this, and Ed and Mack and Kate and everyone for encouraging us to watch it. I watched the video last night, reflected a lot, slept on it (and had nightmares), and then read the article this morning. Pardon my French, but HOLY MERDE! (Reading the news -- and watching the movie -- and it sure looks bad....) In both cases, I tried to keep a cool head, because truth and logic must prevail. (Fifty fifty, fire and ice, right?) My initial disbelief was: how could two planes, and all those people, just disappear? But it sure does appear that those buildings imploded. But who? Why? When? How? All those questions need to be answered. And all the offices housed in 7 WTC? OMG! So many questions. What does Mark Bingham's mother think? Was that her son on the phone or not? A mother would know. How much planning this all took.... And remembering Bush sitting there reading his little goat story in FL....what was he *thinking*? "So it begins...?" I don't know. I really don't know. It boggles the mind. I'd much rather be responding to Smurf's peridots and periwinkles post (I have a h.s. story about peridots and Joni!), or finally finishing my half-written Carly & Kids concert review, but I am too compelled and shaken by all this new information. By the way, I looked at furnitureforthepeople.com (which I thought was Rickie Lee Jone's site exclusively, but it looks like it's changed) and the movie is posted there, too. So hopefully the word, the questions, the truth, are beginning to get out. I wonder if I should post about this at all. Maybe it's paranoia (are "they" watching?) or maybe it's sensitivity -- this is all so disturbing and frightening and heart and mind-numbing. Yes, in the hope and the hopelessness I've witnessed 52 years, I've learned that evil really does exist, but in such enormity? Again, after the Holocaust? Did Bushco have a despicable hand in 9/11? Or were they at least aware, and ignored the impending HELL? (Aside: a quote from some of the just-released emergency call tapes from 9/11, from a police operator just six minutes after the second tower was hit: "They're saying it might be a terrorist attack. It would have to to be because what are the odds of two planes crashing into the same building, OK?....OK. I can't believe this. It's got to be -- it's got to be hell.") And even worse, now we have a war based on...what? "Lies and crap", as Cindy Sheehan says. Cindy, who continues to speak out and try her damndest to expose the lies and end the madness, and keeps getting ARRESTED? When I met Cindy in December, she said (about why she continues to speak out): "It's not about politics. It's about life and death." So much death, for what???? Why???? The reasons for this war boggle the mind. They keep changing. I call them the "raisons du jour." Now we are fighting for freedom and democracy (while many people in our own country are suffering from Katrina and no health care and under-funded schools, etc. but that's another matter). As my dear dad said: "We are bringing you democracy. And if you don't like it, we'll kill you!" "He don't let up the sorrow, he lies and he cheats..." and now the Senate Judiciary Committee won't even vote to censure him over his clearly illegal wiretapping (some saying "because we are in a state of war." Oh yeah? Well who STARTED the war???). In today's paper I read that Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala said: "Our president is an honest man, he is a candid man, a direct man, a strong leader, and the people of America know it. So this hearing, I think, is beyone the pale. The notion of censure is irresponsible." HUH??? I hope that some good investigative truth-seeking journalists (they're going to aim the hoses on you -- show them you won't expire!) and later, historians, will get to work on all this, but for right now, the world is too much with me, so I am going to draw myself a bath think what'd I'd like to have for supper take a walk a bridge a tree a river...... "Now really," the mother says, "those are personal questions and are really none of your business" Undaunted, the little girl asks, "Why did you and Daddy get a divorce?" I have just one name to add: Leontyne Price. Magnificent voice, my favorite Madame Butterfly (decided years ago based on comparing all recorded versions owned by my opera fanatic neighbor). Beautiful beautiful voice! Rich and warm and, for an opera singer, extremely pleasing. Time to hook up the turntable and listen to her again. Madame Butterfly, Porgy and Bess, Barber's Knoxville... The only singer I've ever said, "stop! I hate that!" about is Rosemary Clooney. I know, weird, huh? There's something spooky to me about her singing, like she doesn't have any insides or something. Good thing I haven't had to hear her often. And Joni as a singer? I've been trying to figure out if she's a great singer or if I just think she's a great singer because I love her songs so much. I don't know. Her voice and her songs are so intertwined I can't figure it out. One thing I do know is that I can't listen to Joni's recent voice, not because it's lower (that's nice) but because she doesn't have the lung power to get out the phrases, and her compensating by chopping formerly long phrases into little bits doesn't appeal to me. I know emphysema when I hear it, and I choose not to hear it. Debra Shea, in NYC Tired of spam? Yahoo! There really is a lot of detail there. Plus that report came out in around mid-2004, awhile after the time of the initial conspiracy theories. The report provides a number of answers to the theorists. >Why won't the gov't release the black boxes? What are they hiding? That's not unusual - lots of other items survived the explosion/fire. I know of people who have lost their homes in brush fires here and it is amazing how some items inexplicably survive the fires intact. >Why did WTC 7 collapse at all? It caught on fire from a nearby burning building, plus it probably experienced some weakening from the concussive effects of the massive airplane fuel bombs. I seem to recall that it was then purposely taken down because it was so damaged anyway and they wanted a controlled "fall." I understand this is another big controversy (that is was brought down by demolitions) but that makes sense to me from a safety standpoint. > (side: it's been claimed that cel phones don't work at 3500 > feet, the altitude of flight (73?).
