The cd's we know/use are'nt the same as the "industrial" cd's. Much poorer quality and they don't last as long. Joni hardly used the internet as a tool, and i don't regret it a bit. I must say that the first way to get new Joni fans among youngsters is "letting" them download Joni. And maybe not only youngsters but everyone. From my own exprience, you'll go and buy the album/s of an artist once you've downloaded some of his/her songs, discovered and liked them. And i don't recall such a fuss made about casettes, when they were in use not so long ago. We should absolutely be giving Joni CDs to our younger folk if we can afford it. Not burned copies, but the "real deal" (unless copies are absolutely all you can afford, in which case I guess it's better to pass on the music "real good for free" than not at all). It's important that recipients of Joni's (or anyone's) music have the lyrics, and it would be wonderful if they could have the cover art (as small as it is on a CD), too. If I couldn't give a "real" CD to someone, I would at least include printed lyrics, or give the recipient the link to where the lyrics could be found (www.jonimitchell.com/lyrics). I've been wanting to give one of my young cousins Dog Eat Dog -- because I think she'll dig the lyrics -- but I intend to give her my vinyl LP along with an original CD. I think she'll enjoy the combination, even if she never plays the vinyl. I do, on occasion, give burned CDs to friends, but typically the music is only that which isn't available on CD via any other means. Of course, I'm lucky enough to be able to afford to buy originals most of the time. Again though, I do believe that it's more important to pass the music along, and I would hope that Joni believes that too -- and if that means someone gets a free CD, that might also mean they get so hooked that they buy more Joni CDs, maybe even her entire catalog. > in class i teach joni's songs as social commentary. i hope that's not illegal. In 1971-72 I was in the 8th grade and I had a wonderful English teacher (Mr. Greg Sikorski) who taught The Beatles' songs and lyrics as social commentary, and it absolutely changed my world. I said: Who is it? Norma: "Yeats." Me: Wow! You know what? Joni Mitchell wrote a song that refers to a Yeats poem! Norma: Really? Which one? A bit more digging reveals that there is a LOT of good music there, though. I've downloaded albums by Maria McKee, Jill Sobule and Mariza (another fantastic voice), along with odd songs by the Kinks, Lene Lovich, Cat Power, Kristen Vigard, some 70s disco classics, etc etc. It also has two of Richard Hawley's albums, which I heartily recommend, a lot of Ron Sexsmith, loads of great world and folk music and even "Natural Sounds" - these recordings of beaches, rainforests and so on represent the best per-track value, as some of them are an hour long! I'm going to give my two cents for some I think are great but go under the radar so to speak. (some of these I will not remember the songwriter, so the group will have to suffice)...in no particular order. - - Roger McGuinn...some of my musical tastes were formed here. Just that attitude of Easy rider and that jangly sound is just hard to beat, along with Hendrix's "If Six Was Nine". - -Cat Stevens - Tea For the Tillerman may be one of the best albums ever. - -Cocteau Twins - One of my all time favorites. Up there with Joni and Jefferson Airplane. - - David Bowie - Anyone would be hard pressed to find a better volume of work with The Man Who Sold the World, Hunky Dory, Alladin Sane, and Ziggy Stardust. A master during that period. - -XTC/Dukes of the Stratosphear - Intelligent, funny, satirical and with a sound to boot. - -Enya - Is there not anyone here that likes her....a lot? I'd like to say that her early works are the best, but all her stuff is soooo good. Shepard Moons is up there with anybody's work. C'mon....so it's classified as New Age. - -Christine and John McVie, Danny Kirwan, Bob Welch, Mick Fleetwood (Fleetwood Mac) - Future Games is such a good album it almost hurts every time. Mystery To Me has one of the most beautiful C. McVie songs ever. Why don't You Love Me I think is the name of it. - -Frank Zappa - A genius. - -Genesis (pre Abacab) - Another group that would be hard for anyone to find a better body of work. Selling England By the Pound, Nursery Cryme, A Trick of the Tail, Wind and Wuthering, And Then There Were Three, Duke. I know, some of you P. Gabriel fans out there cringe when you talk about Genesis without him. You are not a true Genesis fan then. Some of their stronger work was after that period especially Trick of the Tail. - -Jackson Browne - -Jefferson Airplane - -Jethro Tull - -Joe Walsh/James Gang - wrote some real good stuff...Barnstorm, Smoker you drink..and yes James Gang Rides Again....goood. - -Karla Bonoff - - Procol Harum - Live and Grand Hotel are my faves by them. - -Simon and Garfunkel - Need you say anythiing. - -Spirit - Twelve Dreams and A Family That Plays Together. Simply a great California band way ahead of it's time. - -Todd Rundgren - A musical geniius IMO. Way underrated. Utopia, Wizard, Initiation are killer. - -Yes - I know. This genre somewhat divides people. But the ones that love this "art rock" like I do know what I'm talking about with Close To the Edge, Fragile, and the Yes album. Wow. I way over did it. Mike NP: Copeland - Don't Slow Down ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Mar 2006 00:01:25 +0100 From: "Jamie's Box of Paints" Subject: Pirates of Penance hi there Hmmm an interesting choice to do a paper on... It's one of Joni's early 'play songs' where sometimes the melody is taken up by a second or even third character in the play. From what I remember of the song (you must excuse me, my stuff is in boxes as I'm moving house this weekend so I'm only going on memory and the lyric section of jonimitchell.com). there are two characters in the song Penance Crane and The Dancer. I don't think the character of The Pirate says anything but generally it's an operetta with Penance Crane - which is an odd character name as I can only think of someone who lives a nun-like existence - her part is full aria while the melody for The Dancer is more recitative, more counterpoint melody. You think that the song is about how Penance Crane was wronged by her lover the Pirate and his fling, the Dancer. But as the song plays we realise that however convincing Penance Crane's argument is, by the strength of the melody, The Dancer's simpler melody (and it has a melody, merely *almost* spoken) upturns Penance Crane's argument simply by being plaintive and direct, like a whisper. In fact you almost miss the one line 'Ask Penance Crane she was out in her garden she saw us' which tells you of The Dancer's honesty. It's quite a complex and ambitious song for a young songwriter and you can see the strength she has as a writer and composer, weaving story, character, melody and arrangement into quite a tight song. I hope this is a good starting point for discussion. I know that there are a few on the list that don't like Pirates of Penance that much. It does have that slight over dramatic, 'something to prove' air about it. It does. It proves she has talent. (I say it's a solo album but like his others the sound is very much like Steely Dan's). I find it FAR superior to Kamakiriad and Everything Must Go, matter of fact I have to go all the way back to Aja to find a Fagen project that I've enjoyed more. While it's cleanly produced, it's not so deathly sterile and soulless like recent Fagen/Dan stuff has been. And there are some EXCELLENT solo's, hey, they even sound - dare I say it - spontaneous. Anyway, if you don't 'get' Fagen/SD, or you can't take his nasally tone, you won't like this either. But if you're a Dan fan, you'll dig it. I find it enough for me to read everyone else's posts each day, and those of 1 or 2 in particular. Recently I have become unemployed, so I have a little more time, and I have a couple things I wanna write about. First I want to mention Rosanna Arquette's documentary, All We Are Saying. The cable company Nazi's gave me 2 free months of Showtime to appease me for taking over a month to fix my cable modem, and I was looking at the Showtime on demand feature when I noticed this documentary. I like Rosanna, and of course I love music so I watched it. Joni is on it in several places, so it is worth seeing for that alone, but it is also a very well done piece with a wide range of artists being interviewed about how they find, or realize their muse, how they balance (if at all) art/life, and the state of the music industry as it is today. We all know how Joni feels about that. As the credits roll, there is footage taken apparently at Joni's house, so if you do watch it, watch the whole thing. Its on Showtime, but also on Showtime On Demand if you have that, or if you know anyone who does, you could just crash their house and hijack their TV for a couple hours. I have enjoyed reading peoples lists of favorite songwriters, so I though I would sheepishly add my own. Music rules !! 1.) Joni (no last name nec.) 2.) J.T. (Stringbean) 3.) Bruce Frank ( you don't know him, he's my best friend) Just to clarify, these are my own personal favorites, not necessarily who i see as the best of all time. Finally, just a word about Patti P. Patti knows her Joni lyrics well, but there is so, so much more to her............you may live your whole life and never meet another person whose heart is so pure, honest, and full of love, hope and peace.
