After I posted, I saw something that said that she was married to Russ. Nathaniel Kunkel, Russ' son, recorded the last Coyote Sisters CD, he also recorded Crosby & Nash's last double CD, and is known among engineers for his portable recording studio setup. I assume he is Leah's son, too... Also, there is a Coyote Sisters CD in print available through CD Baby. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Mar 2006 18:52:19 -0500 From: frednow@aol.com Subject: possible virus? Thanks, Fred ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Mar 2006 00:21:04 +0000 From: "Patti Parlette" Subject: NCAAs, Husky blues -- and Joni comforts me! You sweeties, Bob and Julius! Thank you so much for the comfort. Comfort and consultation, you know, that's what we find here. As you know, in addition to JMOCD, I have a particularly virulent strain of Huskymania, and the flip side (both sides now) of that is Huskymanic depression. (Since I was seventeen, I've had UConn over me.) We just lost a hard-fought battle. Ouch. I had the Husky blues inside and outside my head. I was going to write in and say since we lost I can't get through the day without at least one big boo-hoo and you know there may be more, and I don't care babies, cuz I'm so square with my sophomore jive about the NCAA's. Really.....I get sooooooo blue when we lose. It's a rough road to travel, that road to the Final Four. Now THIS, what follows, I still cannot believe. Before I got a chance to take my phone off the hook to mope (idon'twantnobodycominovertomytableigotnuthintotalktoanybodyabout, ya know?), it rang. "Who the #$%@ is that?", I say to myself. (People know me well enough to just leave me alone after a big loss.) The caller ID tells me it is Janis, my best friend (who, btw, I met in 1975 at an apt. at UConn, when she put Blue on the turntable and I said: "Do you like Joni Mitchell?" Ha ha....you know how THOSE friendships begin! Three Joni albums and two bottles of beaujolais later, we became best friends for life). ANYWAY, I picked up the phone and growled, sullenly and very very bitchily: "What do want?" Janis: Put on Channel 2. Me: Why? Janis: Just put on Channel 2. Me: I don't care about anything right now.... Janis, yelling: WOULD YOU JUST PUT ON CHANNEL 2??? ME: Alright, alright already. WTF? I turned the TV back on, when what to my wondering eyes should appear: JONI MITCHELL on my TV screen! No confetti, just Joni. She's singing "A Case of You" and I just start screaming: "OMG! OMG! Thank you! Thank you! This is just the antidote for my Husky Blues!!!" I went on to watch, completely mesmerized, the last hour of WOHAM, and boy did it set my soul free! Back to the garden! I have often said that Joni is my guardian angel and has played the soundtrack of my life since I got STAS in 9th grade, and "here she comes again, lookin' better than a body has a right to"...in my dark blue hour. All she's gotta do is smile that smile, and there goes all the UConn bad defenses! And she even said, I swear to God: You have to "get the heart to REBOUND and bloom again." Okay, what she said. I'm a wildflower, wavin' for you! The timing of this is a personal miracle for me. How often do you see Joni on your regularly scheduled programming? Thank you, Joni. I immediately forgot my blues and got back to the "what is really important." Of course, I own the WOHAM dvd, but I haven't seen it in ages. Watching this again was just pure magic.....just the pill and potion I needed to get me through the latest act of this passion play. If anyone ever needs a lift, just put on this dvd and you will be transported to truth and beauty and genius.... God, how can I put her into words? I'm not even gonna try. You all know. I'm just preaching to the (upstairs) choir! SIQUOMB. Period. And back to the other side, good luck Jimmy! As Musik Meister Muller said, you are "the last man standing". I'm cheering for your Gators, honey! I have a sign in my window at UConn that says: "BEAT NOVA!" I meant it for us, but now I dedicate to you. And if perchance you lose....perchance to dream with Joni like I just did. With a rebounding heart and renewed humility, Patti P. (a.k.a. loveuconn) P.S. Wait! My cellphone rang as I was driving, and I see it's Bree! I've only talked to her once (the night Marianne's dad died), so this was a surprise. I've emailed a LOT lot w/ Marianne these days, but we have never spoken. Both of our dads are Richards, and we've developed a strong Mutual Admiration and Grief Society which is a beautiful thing. I felt really bad the other night when she wrote, needing comfort and consolation, and I said I had to watch my Huskies but that I'd be back later, and she said: " i don't know.....what is this huskies...." So sweet, this lady! So I pulled over to answer the phone, and it was BOTH of them...Bree from Cincinnati, and Marianne from her home on Sisotowbell Lane in NY! They started singing, and I joined in: "We are stardust, we are golden, and we've got to get ourselves back to the garden..." Then Bree said: "Are you busy? Where are you?" And I said: "I'm travelling in some vehicle!" And we laughed. And we toasted our dads. Then I pulled into the post office parking lot to talk, and we wondered if Joni ever sang about post offices. We don't think so. But parking lots, oui! It was nice! Just thought I'd share..... Sending you a big hug, friends of spirit, and we'll talk again soon, but now I have to go up to my kitchen and fix my best recipe before the next game. Post-secondary institutions are supposed to keep students' grades confidential. I don't think NCLB can override FERPA, can it? I sure hope not! If so, let me know, and I'll be marching on Washington tomorrow. Read this from the Registrar's page on the UConn website (www.uconn.edu): "The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act ("FERPA") set forth the standards for privacy and access to student education records. Under FERPA, access and rights in accordance with post-secondary education records are exercised by the student. Unless information from a student's education record falls under a specified exception, the information cannot be released to third parties (including parents) without a signed and dated consent from the student. FERPA allows - but does not require - schools to disclose student information to the student's parents if the student is a dependent child for tax purposes. The decision on whether to grant such parental access is a matter of individual policy for each University. In the absence of certain exceptional circumstances, it is the position of the University of Connecticut to provide access only to the respective student and any specific party that has obtained the consent of the student. The University regards this position as appropriate and consistent within the relationship that exists between the student and the University." Bob, I'm so glad Nate got out of Military Madness 101. Joni's mantle - I like that image better than Joni's throne. Imo, there has been no other serious contender in terms of the importance of the contribution, originality of the material, quality of the lyrics and music, versatility of the artist and the overall musicianship. However, the name that comes closest to mind, is not Jonatha or Annie, but rather Jane Siberry. Here's why - her very personal vision and poetic language, the dreamy, multi-octave singing voice, the lush vocal tracks and musical arrangements, her versatility on piano and guitar, the originality and aesthetics of her sound, the sense of spirituality in her work, her refusal to compromise musically, her relatively marginal status in the mainstream music business, her experimentation with folk, jazz, classical and electro-pop, the change in sound from one album to the next. All these things bring her closer to Joni than any other contemporary writer-composer I know of. Now, I like Jonatha very much, but her voice and music don't quite reach me in the same way that Jane's or Joni's does. And like Joni, Jane's an odd one, definitely an acquired taste. My .02 Michael in Quebec NP: Jane Siberry - The Vigil (The Sea) Dave wrote: I don't know how many of you know Jonatha Brooke but she is in so many ways the true heiress to Joni's throne (big words I realize). She writes on acoustic guitar in multiple tunings and plays a fine piano too, her lyrics are confessional and deeply resonating, she sings her *** off with incredible pitch and ease in her upper range like Joni in the early 70's and when she rocks she rocks. She's amazing live, not by any means a studio-only phenomenon. My favorite albums are "Plumb", "10c Wings" and "Live" all of which show the range and breadth that makes me associate her with Joni. I imagine Joni is Jonatha's biggest influence, but that is true for thousands of singers; what may be different is how thoroughly the influences got channeled. She doesn't look anything like Joni however so to play her in a movie would be a major makeover. 'in the mood' and 'thru' with the two-step' sound like nothing zep did. robert plant is also responsible for the single greatest vocal moment in the rock era: 'upon us all, upon us all a little raaaaiiiiinnn must fall' what in the hell note did he sing on 'rain'? i think it was an 'h'! ***annie lennox! - can't believe no one mentioned her so far. almost all of the eurythmics albums were re-released on cd in november, with about 7 extra songs each, so i picked up 'sweet dreams' 'touch' and 'be yourself tonight' and they are in consistent play on my ipod. so much great vocalizing there. one of my favorite eurythimics songs is 'it's alright (baby's coming back)' and the singing she does at the end of that song is just amazing. she also did a great job with more than half of the songs on her solo cover album 'medusa'. her versions of the clash's 'train in vain' and marley's 'waiting in vain' are priceless. other great annie vocals/songs worth mentioning are 'angel' (from respect), 'julia' with a million overdubs (from 1984 soundtrack), 'i need you' (the bitterest barroom lament, from 'savage') and her amazing cover of the sugarcube's 'mama'. ***george michael - i really just adore his voice, and like many people i found his version of 'edith and the kingpin' to be the best joni cover to come out of bob's trove in quite a while. i don't have any wham music, but george michael became a great songwriter in his solo career (his second album, 'listen without prejudice' is nearly perfect). he's also done a bunch of great covers, from the adamski/seal 'killer', to songs by queen, elton john, and stevie wonder. his version of bonnie raitt's 'i can't make you love me' makes me cry. i've been obsessed with a song from the five live ep called 'calling you'. but one of his best covers is wonder's 'as', a duet with mary j. blige, on his 2-cd best of (UK version only). ***todd rundgren - his music has been so near and dear to my heart for so long. one of the first white soul singers, and his covers of 'ooh baby baby', 'i'm so proud', 'la la means i love you' and 'cool jerk', all from 'a wizard/a true star' honored his roots. i think daryl hall modeled his voice after todd's (i even think he admitted it in print at some point). just for range, it's hard to believe that the same guy who sang the naive, kind of irritating 'we gotta get you a woman' also sang 'lost horizon' about 15 years later, from the brilliant 'a capella' album, which was produced using only todd's voice and sound processing equipment. ***rickie lee jones - much has been said. just thought i'd add: yesterday i got to take a nice long hot bath and the tape that was playing kicked up rickie lee's version of the jefferson airplane's 'coming back to you', which i sang gently along with. she is absolutely one of a kind. already mentioned, but in my top bunch joni bette judy garland eva cassidy kate bush thought i'd go ahead and send this out. i may follow up tomorrow. sweet dreams, america... patrick np - rautavaara, angel of light ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Mar 2006 00:07:50 -0500 From: vince Subject: njc Need a place to download Bob Seger's Turn the Page for 99" or something like that - any ideas? I picked up "Louder Than Bombs" and "Viva Hate" and totally dug him. Who else write such lyrics as "Why do I spend my valuable time, with people I'd much rather, kick in the eye" >>> I thought it might interest you to know that The Smiths reputedly just turned down $5 Million to get back together. My family didn't own a television until I was 12. We listened to the radio every day I think that's what made me a music fan(atic). In no particular order: 1. Joni 2. Sarah McLachlan 3. Dave Matthews 4. Nat King Cole 5. Marvin Gaye 6. Willy Porter 7. Tim Buckley (Jeff's Dad) Not technically a "good" singer by any means but his gravelly, stylistic voice is one that haunts me. Since they're related I'll cheat and slip Jeff in here too. 8. Maynard James Keenan (of Tool & A Perfect Circle fame) 9. Bonnie Raitt 10. Elton John 11. Annie Lennox 12. John Mellencamp - A few of you are probably shaking your heads but I'm a huge fan of his... The CD "Words and Music" is a two-CD set of his greatest hits and is surprisingly entertaining. John is quoted as saying Joni and Bob Dylan are the two main influences on his career. He did a CD in 2002 called "Trouble No More" which made me take a much deeper look at an artist I'd always liked anyway. 13. Lenny Kravitz 14. Sade 15. Seal 16. Michael Crawford 17. Tori Amos 18. Freddie Mercury 19. Stevie Wonder 20. Michael Franks I'd rather have done a "top 100" list, my tastes are so varied it's tough to represent all the genres I enjoy with only 20 spots to fill. I left out so many worthy candidates in so many genres for example: how do I pick between: Patrice Rushen, Angela Bofill, Phyllis Hyman, Minnie Ripperton and Millie Jackson? These ladies albums were worn out on my turntable. The days I listened to musicals such as South Pacific and My Fair Lady meant I had to add at least one broadway performer, Michael Crawford did a nice job of filling that spot for me but left nowhere for me to include Sarah Brightman and the many other excellent Broadway vocalists I enjoy. I left off Bing Crosby and Ella Fitzgerald, George Michael, Art Garfunkle, Peter Gabriel, Susan Tedeschi, Aretha Franklyn (and almost the entire Motown/Chess contingent). Holly Cole, Paula Cole, Jan Arden, Alison Moyet, Edie Brickell and Me'Shell NdegiOcello. Donald Fagen, Michael McDonald, Bryan Ferry, David Byrne, James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Neil Young and Donovan. I could go on ad nauseum with those I left off but I won't bore you. I'm making a list and checking it twice myself. I was recently introduced to an album called "The Grey Album". It's a remix done by a guy named Brian Burton, alias "Danger Mouse", a mix of the Beatles "White Album" and Jay-Z's retirement opus "The Black Album". It's very cleverly done though a copyright infringement on both sides and not available for commercial sale. I guess I was way behind the times because it was done in 2004. I wish someone had told me about it sooner, it's cool. There is a link at: http://www.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/Music/02/19/leisure.grey.album.reut/index.html which talks about it. Keep those names coming, I'm really enjoying this thread. I dunno, I dunno. I've met him a few times and he is so sweet - a large positive presence. We both saw him at the party when you were out here in 2004. I had been limping and in extreme pain most of that year from a neurological condition and he immediately asked me about it. He then told me about his hip problem but thought he was being helped by glucosamine at that time. And he was not nearly in the deteriorated condition that I saw later on the show. His kindness and concern has always stayed with me. Indeed, I felt very helped by him. I was so sorry to see how much he was suffering on the show and am happy to see that his condition has been relieved. I also learned from the show that he was the Scarecrow in The Wiz on Broadway! New beginnings for him - it was very uplifting.
