I'm not too sure when, or if the producers would need Joni's permission (i guess they don't because no one owns copyrights for his life story), but i know that Joni's story should be much more interesting than Cash's. I mean, not only would it be a chance to rediscover the era of so called 60's revolution thru the eyes of a woman with an amazing childhood and youth, then a woman and an artist involved with some pretty interesting figures of that time, but also the story of Joni and her daughter alone is much more than good enough for a feature film, don't you think? Not always, true, but true in this case. If a teacher wanted to used it in a presentation in face to face teaching, he/she could. It is an exception called Fair Use according to U.S. Copyright Law. Interestingly, there is no such exception for Canadian Copyright. Films and cd's cannot be played in Canadian classrooms with direct permission or by paying for a license. But I do know that they do play films and CDs in Canadian classrooms, and I'm not aware that they pay a license or get direct permission, unless there's some kind of blanket permission that schoolboards obtain (?) I can't imagine anyone suing a school for doing this. It would seem kind of pointless. When the kids study Shakespeare, for example, they watch one or more filmed versions of the play to help them get it. And when it's close to holidays and a lot of kids have already left early (the rich ones), the teachers sometimes just show movies because they know they're not going to get much out of the kids that are left behind. I should have been more specific. The films that Canadians buy to use in classrooms are higher priced with Public Performance Rights. Those aren't needed here by U.S. Law, and no feature films can be shown in Canadian classrooms without permission. Of course, they can break the law and do, but I'm sure it isn't district sanctioned. As to not imagining anyone suing a school, can you spell D-I-S-N-E-Y? They've done it many times and have set legal precedent with their cases. Last Sunday the interviewee for this long running radio programme was Renee Fleming, the opera singer. One of the 8 songs she chose for her desert island was her own jazzy version of "River". She told the interviewer how nervous she had been about what Joni would think of her cover, and how truly relieved she was when she was told by a friend who had played it for Joni, that she liked it. It was very clear what a great fan Renee is, how she really felt intimidated by "the great Joni Mitchell". At the end of the programme she had to choose one of the 8 records that she would choose to keep if the rest were flooded away, and she said something like: "I find it impossible to choose one singer as best singer. So it will have to be Joni Mitchell, I'll take River, but sung by Joni Mitchell herself." So the way I understood her was: as a classically trained singer she could not choose one other classical singer to listen to all the time, but she wanted to take Joni because that was more than just "singing", it was the whole package of words and music and personality. Waiving as I'm sailing by! Lieve in London. PS Covers Bob, I guess you have Renee's River already? ______________________________________________________________ This message may contain privileged information. Any attempt would surely fall way way short. I hope it's never tried. Hello sweet Bree, If a movie is ever made about Joni, not documenrty, but a feature one with a plot that has to be made and solved, i don't think that it will revolve around Joni's music. Surely, the music would probablly be there all the way, but being a playwright, i can sense that the story of Joni and Kilaurent is one of those things that a script writer/director/producer would'nt resist. That can lead to a very soap-operatic sort of film, and in order to avoid it, i guess the script would have to follow "The dark years" of Kilaurent, plus, maybe, one or two of her scandals, and maybe the fact the meanwhile Joni was busy in her career and men. Another film might choose to tell another story. Since Joni has retired, and no matter how pleased or happy she may be, i feel that there's something tragic going on in her life. I mean, compared to her earlier years, when she was full of creative energy. The choice of an artist to "leave it all behind" is a story, and can suit a movie. I think most of us can't imagine anyone playing Joni at the movies. Maybe because we know her too well. It's going to be really hard finding the right actress to play the young Joni and maybe easier with the older Joni. And if it won't come from the California movie industry, then no doubt the Candian one will eventualy create a film about Joni. I love Canadian movies - do you?:) And we shouldn't worry if it is attempted and tried. I for one am much more worried about Joni fading away slowly in the future, and like she wrote about her cat in Man from Mars - get "Swallowed by the dark". I will be very surprised, to say the least, if a movie about Joni will not hit the screens, sometime, maybe far away from here and now. Love, Nuri - --------------------------------- New Yahoo! In fact, it gave me a new appreciation for Johnny Cash and June Carter and I've since listened to a lot more of their music than I ever did, especially John's. I'm sure it's a load of bollocks as far as being their true story, but as a *story*, it was enjoyable. It's difficult doing true biographies anyway. Everyone has a different take on what the truth of a situation is and it's all coloured by memory (or lack thereof.) And then again, you've got to take out all the boring bits and just include the exciting stuff and then, for the sake of continuity, they often combine several events into one because it makes for better drama. > I can't imagine anyone playing Joni..much less > singing her songs..and then > playing her songs on guitar or piano. > > Any attempt would surely fall way way short. I was driving home (in Texas) listening to Urge for Going. I was getting drawn into the song and all the wonderful images Joni evokes: the trees and the frost and the man when I came around the corner to an eye-full of SPRING. Flowers budding, leaves ready to dress the trees and............ It DIDN'T MAKE SENSE!!!! I was wrapped in Winter inside.....but my eyes saw Spring. It threw me for awhile. My inner and outer didn't match! I love the way she draws us into her VISION! It's so powerful. I particularly like: "I'd like to call back summer time, and have her stay for just another month or so" This is how I feel right now - and every year when I realise that the cooler months are bearing down on us. Speaking of Melbourne and weather, we could hum every song referring to each of the seasons because, as every Australian knows, only Melbourne can boast four seasons in one day! But you are right Mark about the C'wealth Games - Melbourne has really turned it on. Although I still don't "get" the Opening Ceremony, and I live 400 km away, so heaven knows what the folks in Nigeria thought about it! And how's about Scotland with all those swimming medals! Anyway, its always good to hear from a fellow Sydney-sider on the list. In fact, lets here more from the Southern Hemisphere-ians on the list! You're right, Catherine I also had a renewed appreciation of Johnny and June even if biopics, like maps, are subjective things. And yeah directors do edit 'boring' scenes to sustain interest although the 'boring' scenes are quite interesting too. For films that intentionally refuse to yield to jump cuts that compress time and space, check out the films of this Canadian auteur Chantal Akerman. By the way, Shelby Lynne is in "Walk the Line" and is actually good. Not that I think singers are not good actors but . . . Overall ..I liked the movie..and > thought the two stars > did some awesome acting. I totally enjoyed "Walk the line." In fact, it gave me a new appreciation for Johnny Cash and June Carter and I've since listened to a lot more of their music than I ever did, especially John's. I think in the BBC broadcast, JT says it was 5 months. (Thanks Simon.) In "Joni Mitchell: Woman of Heart and Mind", there are about 1.5 seconds showing the outside of "The Night Owl" at night (appropriately enough). It shows nothing more than a sign really but it's 12 minutes and 32 seconds in (on the DVD clock). I'm sure it's old news to most and not so old to a few. (Patti P, Em A, Sharon G?) Beautiful job at sequencing the songs. Because I was listening to the whole CD without looking at the song titles, I was pleasantly surprised to hear "Come in from the Rain" at the very end. I have heard two good versions of this song aside from MM: one is Maureen McGovern and the other one is from the late great Shirley Horn off her "The Main Ingredient" album of 1996. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Mar 2006 23:15:52 -0600 From: "mack watson-bush" Subject: Re: njc, neil young, linda ronstadt, etc. Thanks Patti.
