Since you're all getting into Spring fever up there I thought I'd throw out a shout to everyone else in the Southern Hemisphere. I always enjoy the approach of the colder months after a long humid Sydney Summer. Happy Autumn days to everyone on this side of the planet. Can't think of any Joni lyrics that portray Autumn. Anyone got any thoughts on that? On the subject of Dancin' Clowns and a future recording from Joni. A ballet is a great idea. I hope it tours down this way. Also, I just received the DVD of Rosanna Arquette's "All We Are Saying" from Catherine. Thank you very much. I will get those copies flowing as soon as I can. In her interview, Rosanna tells Joni that she is very disappointed that Joni won't record any more and she has retired. Joni replies that she has "...either retired or on hiatus". She also says she has written quite a bit lately but she just doesn't have the enthusiasm to follow it through to recording and putting the songs out there just now. I think it is only a matter of time before Joni gets back into the recording studio. Congratulations to those on the list from the Commonwealth. The Games in Melbourne have been a great diversion and very exciting. Canada is moving up the list on the medal tally I see. Tony Blair arrives in Melbourne on Sunday. I really like the way that disabled events are mingled in with the others events instead of a separate games like the Olympics. I didn't think Melbourne could outdo Sydney's Olympics but Melbourne is looking like a very cool city right now. They can put on a good show. Anyone on the list from Melbourne? Another reminder that the Joni Remix Project is still alive. It has been on hold for some time now. Nothing new has come in for a while. If anyone has any remixes, extended versions or mash-ups of Joni's songs to contribute, e-mail me off list. When it is finally finished, I will distribute it to the list. Enjoy the Spring weather everyone in the north and watch the changing colours of Autumn for those in the south. There is a great cd of Autmun Songs I have with great songs called When October Goes. That song was recently mentioned here. Barry Manilow wrote the music to an old Johnny Mercer lyric and the result is magic. It moves me, especially when a great artist like Rosemary Clooney sings it. And when October goes The snow begins to fly Above the smokey roofs I watch the planes go by The children running home Beneath a twilight sky Oh, for the fun of them When I was one of them And when October goes The same old dream appears And you are in my arms To share the happy years I turn my head away To hide the helpless tears Oh how I hate to see October go I should be over it now I know It doesn't matter much How old I grow I hate to see October go ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Mar 2006 14:46:41 +0000 From: "Sherelle Smith" Subject: Re: My SXSW report: Day 1 (njc and very long) HI Julius! Future liberals, on the other hand ... Mar. 19, 2006. 10:45 AM KURT KLEINER SPECIAL TO THE STAR Remember the whiny, insecure kid in nursery school, the one who always thought everyone was out to get him, and was always running to the teacher with complaints? Chances are he grew up to be a conservative. At least, he did if he was one of 95 kids from the Berkeley area that social scientists have been tracking for the last 20 years. The confident, resilient, self-reliant kids mostly grew up to be liberals. The study from the Journal of Research Into Personality isn't going to make the UC Berkeley professor who published it any friends on the right. Similar conclusions a few years ago from another academic saw him excoriated on right-wing blogs, and even led to a Congressional investigation into his research funding. But the new results are worth a look. In the 1960s Jack Block and his wife and fellow professor Jeanne Block (now deceased) began tracking more than 100 nursery school kids as part of a general study of personality. The kids' personalities were rated at the time by teachers and assistants who had known them for months. There's no reason to think political bias skewed the ratings the investigators were not looking at political orientation back then. Even if they had been, it's unlikely that 3- and 4-year-olds would have had much idea about their political leanings. A few decades later, Block followed up with more surveys, looking again at personality, and this time at politics, too. The whiny kids tended to grow up conservative, and turned into rigid young adults who hewed closely to traditional gender roles and were uncomfortable with ambiguity. The confident kids turned out liberal and were still hanging loose, turning into bright, non-conforming adults with wide interests. The girls were still outgoing, but the young men tended to turn a little introspective. Block admits in his paper that liberal Berkeley is not representative of the whole country. But within his sample, he says, the results hold. He reasons that insecure kids look for the reassurance provided by tradition and authority, and find it in conservative politics. The more confident kids are eager to explore alternatives to the way things are, and find liberal politics more congenial. In a society that values self-confidence and out-goingness, it's a mostly flattering picture for liberals. It also runs contrary to the American stereotype of wimpy liberals and strong conservatives. Of course, if you're studying the psychology of politics, you shouldn't be surprised to get a political reaction. Similar work by John T. Jost of Stanford and colleagues in 2003 drew a political backlash. The researchers reviewed 44 years worth of studies into the psychology of conservatism, and concluded that people who are dogmatic, fearful, intolerant of ambiguity and uncertainty, and who crave order and structure are more likely to gravitate to conservatism. Critics branded it the "conservatives are crazy" study and accused the authors of a political bias. Jost welcomed the new study, saying it lends support to his conclusions. But Jeff Greenberg, a social psychologist at the University of Arizona who was critical of Jost's study, was less impressed. - --------------------------------- Yahoo! The iconic Canadian singer/songwriter will play a prominent role in the company's 40th anniversary season, Calgarians learned Tuesday during the unveiling of the 2006/'07 lineup. Dancing Joni, a work created by Alberta Ballet artistic director Jean Grand-Maitre, will share a blockbuster February program with ballets by George Balanchine and Nacho Duato, one of today's top choreographers. Grand-Maitre met with Mitchell last week in a Beverly Hills restaurant about his idea for a piece based on her music. "She expressed a lot of excitement for this project," he said. "She wants to create it with us. She not only agreed to let me use her music, but she is also going to design the set for the ballet and help me assemble the ballet soundtrack." Mitchell has also pledged to attend the premiere, Grand-Maitre says. "It's going to be very big -- a huge project. I'm trying to get the CBC interested in it as a kind of 40th anniversary special on the making of the work." Mitchell, a Fort Macleod native who grew up in Saskatchewan, was a seminal musical influence on everyone from Van Morrison to Bob Dylan from the 1960s on. According to Grand-Maitre, the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famer's contribution to her artistic collaboration on Dancing Joni might even extend to the inclusion of unpublished musical material. "I know she does have an original song she would like to let me use; a song that's never been heard for the ballet," Grand-Maitre says. "But whether she'll be able to record it in time for me to listen to it and choreograph it is another story." Dancing Joni will be in good company. Other pieces on the winter program also reflect increasing international awareness of Alberta Ballet as one of Canada's most innovative performing arts companies. Opening the show will be George Balanchine's Serenade, set to the music of Tchaikovsky. "It's widely considered one of the greatest ballets ever choreographed," Grand-Maitre says of the 1934 neo-classical work. "We're very fortunate to be able to finally be able to premiere it in our company." The third piece will be Duato's Without Words, created in 1998. "I just got confirmation last Friday," says Grand-Maitre, describing the Spanish choreographer as "probably one of the top five choreographers in the world right now. "It's a ballet that is given to very select companies in the world, so it says a lot about our company's reputation that we were able to secure this piece now." Other highlights of Alberta Ballet's 40th year include a brand new setting of Carl Orff's popular Carmina Burana and a refurbished version of Grand-Maitre's own Cinderella -- last performed in Calgary three years ago - -- but with original costumes this time around to match the company's original sets. The season finale will be the Royal Winnipeg Ballet production of Mark Godden's 1998 gothic ballet, Dracula. Assessing his season choices, Grand-Maitre says as the Calgary-based company is developing, "it's becoming more and more contemporary, and I think the audiences are developing a taste for that. I certainly felt that last year. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Mar 2006 09:55:18 -0500 From: "Marianne Rizzo" Subject: Which Joni Album/Song are you >Which Joni Album/Song are you? that is a beautiful question. . . . Mark, Can I offer a word of advice? I deal in copyright issues every day as a media librarian. If Joel has requested that you take them down, which is his right whether you make money from them, or not, then I would heed his request and not disribute them in any way. It is very rare that a copyright owner give a specific request to cease in such manner, and if he has, he has laid very credible legal basis to seek remuneration from you if you in any way distribute his work for any reason without his permission. NJC Hi Mack, Sherelle, and other Manchester fans, Wow this thread is still (delightfully) alive! Great! There should really be a discussion list for MM because her music seems to have touched many members in our Joni community. Today I was lucky to see a used copy of "The Essence of Melissa Manchester" in my favorite indie record store near campus. It has a lot of very distinct songs. Here's the track listing as cut from allmusic.com and pasted here. Hope it registers fine in your screen. 1 If It Feels Good (Let It Ride) Manchester, Sager 3:23 2 Easy Manchester, Sager 5:49 3 Bright Eyes Anderson, Manchester 4:28 4 Midnight Blue Manchester, Sager 3:54 5 Through the Eyes of Grace Manchester 3:59 6 Home to Myself Manchester, Sager 2:50 7 Alone Anderson, Manchester 3:21 8 O Heaven (How You've Changed Me) Manchester 3:26 9 Good News Manchester, Sager 5:46 10 Through the Eyes of Love [Theme from Ice Castles] Hamlisch, Sager 4:10 11 Just Too Many People Manchester, Poncia 3:37 12 Lovers After All Manchester, Ware 3:59 13 Fire in the Morning Dorff, Harju, Herbstritt 3:51 14 Whenever I Call You "Friend" Loggins, Manchester 4:44 15 Don't Cry Out Loud Allen, Sager 3:47 16 You Should Hear How She Talks About You Pitchford, Snow 4:14 17 Caravan Manchester 3:33 18 Just You and I Manchester, Sager 4:06 19 Come in from the Rain Manchester, Sager 4:16 Beautiful job at sequencing the songs. Because I was listening to the whole CD without looking at the song titles, I was pleasantly surprised to hear "Come in from the Rain" at the very end. I have heard two good versions of this song aside from MM: one is Maureen McGovern and the other one is from the late great Shirley Horn off her "The Main Ingredient" album of 1996. Have I told you lately how beautiful your performance at Carnegie Hall? It was. Thank you. It's recorded, you know. If only in my mind. Just lovely. So, here's Ben Taylor's official website, Sherelle and all. No mention of the new disc dropping, but he will be on tour in NY and MA in the near. Catch him if you can: www.bentaylorband.com I've gotta mention that Ben sang a super-unique song at SXSW about a guy, who's in love with a girl, who falls for another dude...but then the original guy falls in love with the girl's new guy! It's called "Your New Boyfriend is a *Really* Nice Guy." or something like that. NJC Joseph, so glad you are enjoying the thread. Yes, that CD is fantastic. Melissa wrote 'come in from the rain' with Bayer Sager and although I have heard some passable versions, none come close to the passion she puts into it. There are two versions on two different albums, she also did it on 'hey ricky' with a different arrangement, but that particular version is the best. 'Hey Ricky' has some beautiful tunes on it as well and though the 80's hit she had hasn't aged well, you should hear how she talks about you ( a record co. move) and I didn't really care for it anyway, she does a wistful, beautiful, simply beautiful duet with David Gates called 'Wish We Were Heroes." Also does Gershwin on that album. AAAAh. And to write of it a tune called 'looking for the perfect aaahhh!. The title tune is "Hey Ricky." It's an upbeat number that I always liked, a for fun number with lyrics by Bernie Taupin. Melissa did the music. Really could talk about her all day long. Sorry. mack mackd here.
