Thanks! The article brings a sweet bird to my mind: "At the end of its life-cycle the phoenix builds itself a nest of _cinnamon_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinnamon) twigs that it then ignites; both nest and bird burn fiercely and are reduced to ashes, from which a new, young phoenix arises. The new phoenix embalms the ashes of the old phoenix in an egg made of _myrrh_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myrrh) and deposits it in _Heliopolis_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heliopolis) ("the city of the sun" in _Greek_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_language) ), located in Egypt. The bird was also said to regenerate when hurt or wounded by a foe, thus being almost immortal and invincible b a symbol of fire and _divinity_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divinity) ." Picked it up in the late 70's and I still have it somewhere. Her interpretation of the song ``Alone`` from that album has always stood out for me as a thing of great beauty. I found a used copy of her debut album called "Still I can't be still" last week for $2.99. It was only today that I listened to it. The album will not make you remember her vocal acrobatics on Broadway but she has this song called "Fool out of me" which has a Joni mention. I am pasting the paragraph here. I wish I could fight against Ali and win I wish I could write with Joni Mitchell's pen Sail the Atlantic on a paddle boat I wish I could smile like Bobby de Niro I wish that the lotto was the number of my telephone I wish I could sing a duet with Bono Cause I don't want to sound like Anyone else, you know I just wanna take you under my spell Excuse me for saying What I know down deep is my sin But maybe I'll fool everybody into thinking I know just what I am doing All that I don't know Paralyzes me But somehow I keep going on Just settling for this mediocrity And I wonder if God is trying to make a fool out of me Interesting, no? Her songwriting craft demands to be discussed, analyzed, and accorded respect. Joseph np: Richard Bliwas "Paper Back Yard" mack watson-bush a icrit : Joseph wrote: > I like Melissa Manchester too. When I was a kid in the archipelago her songs were on heavy radio airplay such as "Fire in the Morning", "Looking Through The Eyes of Love" and "Dont Cry Out Loud" - --Her hit records were tremendous Joseph although despite my feelings for her I never cared for 'don't cry out loud'-- always thought the lyrics were a little squirrelly and Melissa herself has said she didn't quite find them the way they should be. Great vocal though but she always pulls that off. I don't listen to the song. The reason I write this is that her old albums are indeed hard to find but well worth it if you can pull it off. That is where she really shines and is quite the songwriter herself. She even pays tribute to Joni in one of the tunes. I have most of her work in some form or another but getting very hard to find some of it. Particularly trying to find the tunes I only have on records, can't even find some of them on Limewire--- yet. She has a website and had a bulletin board where I and other fans would post. ( The format is not as good as this and haven't found any other list with this setup. One would think others would emulate this system.) Unfortunately an asshole came on board and was posting disgusting, obscene messages so they closed the forum down. I would dearly love to contact those in control and offer my services as moderator of a new board for her but can't seem to find out how to do it. Any advice on that would be appreciated. We Missy fans are starving for a place to express ourselves. So check her out if you can find her, the older tunes, the not hit tunes, you will not be sorry. She does a killer version of 'walk on by' that beats the heck out of Warwick's. Her version of Randy Newmans' " I Don't Want to Hear it Anymore' is too fine for words. She is, without a doubt, indescribable. mack - --------------------------------- Nouveau : tiliphonez moins cher avec Yahoo! Messenger ! I also had the pleasure of seeing Melissa live in 1976 at the Richfield Coliseum near Cleveland. What a great concert!! I have to think she was so appealing because of her naturalness. Kind of like Queen music snob Joni liking Norah Jones, for that same feeling of "unaffectedness" when she sings. >but when she sings in spanish...its just becomes totally no longer >white bread...and I don't mean that in any racial sense at all. Aw no, I think it means she can do it all and well. Nothing wrong with a good crossover ;-) Some mentioned Patti Austin. She is the ultimate to me. She has been doing collaborations with David Benoit, Dave Koz and others the past few years. OMG, she is gorgeous. Ronee Blakley - there is a club near downtown L.A. - El Cid - that is kind of like an old Spanish Hacienda and was built in 1890 as the first sound stage in L.A. I've also heard that Rudolph Valentino lived there at one time. There are wonderful Flamenco dance shows there but on the first Tuesday of every month there is a Rockabilly night with some FABULOUS groups of musicians famous, unknown and infamous. I've heard that Ronee shows up there occasionally and was there in January. If I spot her, I'll let you know.
