Every year, on the first day of spring (actually the first day that really feels like spring - you know that first glorious day when the weather is just so perfect it's almost like a religious experience! - I load Miles of Aisles in my car CD player, head for the country, and drive around with the windows down, the sunroof open, and the music blaring. I've been doing this every year since the late 70s, and its always the perfect start of the spring / summer for me. So full of life. So vibrant. It might not have the same impact for those in the deep south, but after a long winter in the Chicago area, its transformative. Life is awaking all around me, and somehow this is the ideal soundtrack. I'll play MOA 5 or 10 times throughout the spring, and then put it away till next year. I'm not sure why, but it is only a spring album to me. Similarly, Don Juan's Reckless Daughter is a winter album to me. Probably because when it came out, Chicago was in the middle of a monster cold streak, and I so vividly remember coming in from the sub-zero weather and warming up to this marvel of an album. Does anyone else have "Seasonal Favorites"? On this day the North and South Poles are equally distant from the sun, so we will have almost exactly the same amount of daytime as nighttime. The novelist Margaret Atwood said, "In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt." Happy first day of spring. LO VE Marianne any Joni references to spring? I can't think of any right now .. (I mean, I think of crocuses to bring to school. . . ) _________________________________________________________________ Dont just search. Find. It's like that old adage of that which we dislike in others is what we dislike in ourselves. The good news is that isn't neccessarily such a bad thing when you ponder it, right? ;-) I always thought Mariah had much talent and loved her singing. I just don't like the kind of outwardly diva style and appearance she has acquired in recent years. Don't think she needs it but hey, it's her thing. I admit to a great love of Gloria Estefan and glad to see others here appreciate her, too. I used to kind of wonder why I did enjoy her. I do love the rhythms and while her voice doesn't blow you away, I think her appeal is her naturalness. She's kind of like the Cuban Karen Carpenter in her easy, natural singing style. There is a lot of nice, understated, sincere and heartfelt feeling. I think I have the same album as Catherine - it's "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me" and includes some of my old nostalgic faves such as "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying," "You've Made Me So Very Happy," "How Can I Be Sure," and "Traces." I adore both Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins. They still have it, too. Kate is so lucky to know Kenny. One of the highlights of my short-lived and obscure singer-songwriter days is having some guy who used to play with him jump in and play electric piano along to my music back in the 70s at a party in Hollywood ;-) (It doesn't take much to thrill me ;-) Kakki NP: Gloria Estefan - Everlasting Love ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Mar 2006 03:04:48 +0000 From: "Michael O'Malley" Subject: Re: RE:The Constant Gardener, and other movies njc Joseph wrote: "The Constant Gardener" along with "A History of Violence" were two of the five best films (along with "Tony Takitani", "Ushpizin" and "Me and You and Everyone We Know") that came out in 2005. Me: I'm happy to see "Me and You and Everyone We Know" mentioned on this list. I thoroughly enjoyed this quirky little film, with its artsy pretensions and strange offbeat humour, although I gather it received mixed reviews in the press. This film stayed with me. Not a great film, but very fresh and original.
