NJC Diva roundup: I like 'Mi Tierra' too, and try not to think of Gloria's politics when she sings, nor those of Celia Cruz either, to mention just two Cubanas. I suppose Em and Joseph are attracted to Gloria because of their Spanish connections, no? Linda Rondstadt's Mexican songs are an acquired taste that I haven't totally acquired yet. I didn't know that Sheena Easton had made any jazz songs and would like to hear some. Bette Midler I don't have much time for, but she can come and sing 'Delta Dawn' or 'Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy' beneath my balcony any time she wants. Diana Ross did a fairly good job of some Billie Holliday songs, I think, in the movie. Other divas? Oh, Mr. O'Smurf, usually I read your messages and laugh right here where you can't hear it, but this time I just have to send an LOL message. Happy St. Paddy's Day to you and everyone! Just an hour after reading the welsh error, i read this in today's times: "...St. Patrick himself. The son of Romans stationed in Britain, he was kidnapped in his youth by marauding Irish who sold him into slavery to a Druid master. Given to visions and important dreams, after years of contemplative indenture tending sheep, he got free of his captors, took Holy Orders in France, thence to Rome where he was given his mission: to return and convert the "pagan" Irish from their worship of nature and its elements." from a very interesting op-ed http://www.nytimes.com/2006/03/17/opinion/17lynch.html incidentally, the name patrick means 'upper class' in latin (patricius) st. patrick took the name as an adult. oops, now reading his wikipedia entry, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Patrick i see that it's possible he was born in the welsh village of Banwen, under roman occupation at the time. anyway, happy me day to all. patrick np - kcrwmusic.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Mar 2006 15:36:50 -0800 From: "Lori Fye" Subject: Re: what smarm-divas do we like? Dear all, Well I have to put my happeny's worth in here. Mariah is Mariah as Joni is Joni and any feelings we have about any artist is a reflection of who we are and Not who they are. Working on this premise we have to assume that any Joy we experience when listening to our favourite artists is because we are able to be and feel more ourselves in their musical world - A world that encompasses Both content and image. So If I hate Mariah it is merely subjective. I know the Ego doesn't like that idea and we all love to debate the merits or lack of in the artists we love or despise, but that is a trick an unreality. so If I hate mariah I don't say it's because of her music or her sexual strutting or her image, I say it's because what she represents to me and how i internalise that representation shakes the idea I have of myself, of who I am - My ego Identity. But I got ahold today of her spanish album called "Abriendo Puertas" (Opening Doors) and it does really fit just right, somehow. She sounds so excellent in Spanish, you really end up feeling the depth of her emotion for this music. I like her MUCH better in Spanish. She feels delicious, like butter on pancakes. Like all things that happened hundreds of years ago or more, my attitude is who the feck really knows! Although I heard about this Welsh connection many years ago, I was reminded of it with today's "Writer's Almanac" from Garrison Keillor. Here's what ol' Gar had to say: "St. Patrick was born around the year 385 in a village in Wales. When he was sixteen, a group of Irish pirates raided his village and took many of the young men back to Ireland to work as slaves. Patrick worked for six years as a herdsman in the Irish countryside. In his sixth year, he escaped and made his way back to Wales. But, according to his autobiography, soon after he got back home he heard a voice telling him to go back to Ireland and convert the Irish to Christianity. That's eventually what he did, but first he went to France to visit monasteries and study religious texts. After twelve years in France, he went back to Ireland, where he founded monasteries, schools and churches, and converted much of the island to Christianity. Patrick transformed many pagan traditions into Christian ones." I suppose being born in the US makes one American, but being born in Wales probably doesn't -- or didn't -- make one Welsh, so I have no idea what nationality St. P. was. But I think we can all be sure he wasn't Irish! - --Smurf, who's so sick of winter, he really wouldn't mind a few Irish pirates raiding his village right about now . . . PS: Some late Joni-ish content. Today's "Writer's Almanac" also featured the lyrics to "St. Louis Blues" by W. C. Handy. I thought some here might enjoy reading it. St. Louis Blues I hate to see de ev'nin' sun go down, Hate to see de ev'nin' sun go down, 'Cause ma baby, he don lef dis town. Feelin' tomorrow lak ah feel today, Feel tomorrow lak ah feel today, I'll pack my trunk, make ma gitaway. St. Louis woman, wid her diamon' rings. Pulls dat man roun' by her apron strings. 'Twant for pawder an' for store-bought hair, De man ah love would not gone nowhere, nowhere. God de St. Lois Blues jes as blue as ah can be, Dat man got a heart lak a rock cast in the sea, Or else he wouldn't have gone so far from me. Been to de Gypsy to get ma fortune tole, To de Gypsy done got ma fortune tole, 'Cause I'm most wile 'bout ma Jelly Roll Gypsy done tole me "Don't you wear no black." Yes she done tole me, "Don't you wear no black, Go to St. Louis. You can win him back." Help me to Cairo, make St. Louis by maself, Git to Cairo, find ma ole friend Jeff. Gwine to pin maself close to his side, If ah flag his train, I sho' can ride. I loves dat man lak a schoolboy loves his pie, Lak a Kentucky Col'nel loves his mint an' rye, I'll love ma baby till the day ah die. You ought to see dat stovepipe brown of mine, Lak he owns de Dimon Joseph line,' He'd make a cross-eyed 'oman go stone blin'. Blacker than midnight, teeth lak flags of truce, Blackest man in de whole St. Louis, Blacker de berry, sweeter am de juice. About a crap game, he knows a pow'ful lot, But when work-time comes, he's on de dot. Gwine to ask him for a cold ten-spot, What it takes to git it, he's cert'nly got. A black-headed gal makes a freight train jump the track, Said a black-headed gal makes a freight train jump the track, But a long tall gal makes a preacher ball the Jack. Lawd, a blond-headed woman makes a good man leave the town, I said blond-headed woman makes a good man leave the town, But a read-headed woman makes a boy slap his papa down. Oh ashes to ashes and dust to dust, I said ashes to ashes and dust to dust, If my blues don't get you my jazzing must. Tired of spam? Yahoo!
