I don't want to get too excited about this because I'm sure it's already in the undercover section and I just missed it, but yesterday I was making a tape for a friend of mine (yes, a tape) of a big 3 record collection called "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" that features all kinds of different artists, including mother Maybelle - I think it came out in the 70s so maybe it was Sarah Carter. Then again, those scrappy Appalachians can live a a long time :) Anyway, when I got to the end of one side of the record, or I thought it was the end, it ended with Will the Circle Be Unbroken? But then I noticed that the needle still had a little strip to traverse so I impatiently waited, not really paying attention. After a minute it dawned on me - I know those chord progresssions, I know that melody - this is Both Sides Now! And so it was, but an instrumental, rootsy bluegrass, old-timey version. Anybody else have this record? I didn't see it in the Joni undercover section but I may have just missed it. Pretty cool sequencing I think that they ended with Both Sides Now and its air of resignated ambivalence over Will the Circle Be Unbroken with its emphasis on tradition, and the connectedness of this sad corporeal existence to the heavenly future one. Just puts me in a good mood on this Friday morning. That's a recording of BSN by Randy Scruggs, Kira. That particular recording isn't listed but Randy's version is listed as part of a Flatt & Scruggs live LP. Still, nice catch and always a fun surprise to hear Joni when you don't expect it. I recall the first time I heard Counting Crows BYT as a bonus track at the end of Hard Candy - I didn't know then that it was a hidden bonus track. Was a way cool moment. She asked to be sure and tell aunt Mar. Marianne has played Joni and told them ( Bella has a twin..her name is Connie) about her since they were babies. Their mother has given them a lovely appreciation for music too. In fact...they went to their first concert last year...we all saw America together. America's encore was Horse With No Name....I was holding Connie... and she sang right along....knew most of the words. I thought a nice little picture to start the weekend with.
