Perhaps however my memory is getting full and working on overload. I do believe i heard them sing happy trails. I was visiting a friend in the Bay area around 1977, and we were both blown away by that last little song on the tape. she still rembers it too. As boomers we all waited anxiously for Roy and Dale to ride into our living rooms. And at the end the show we'd all wait to sing the song with them. that tune was so up! i will believe, and i want to believe that this gem is out there somewhere waiting to found. and when it's found i hope we'll all want to sing along with it. And then there was the great "Roy Rogers" story she told in 1995 at the Gene Autry show. Not to mention the Sons Of The Pioneers songs she's recorded (Cool Water, My Best To You). I don't get to tell any Joni stories. Joni hasn't had much of a connection to Australia, only having performed here once. Well, I finally have a story to tell... A funny thing happened tonight as I was catching the light rail home. A middle aged tourist couple came up to me and asked, "Is this the tram to Darling Harbour?". I said that it is and we got to chatting on the tram. I asked where they are from. They said Vancouver Island. I asked, "Victoria?" (being the only place I know on VI). They said no and I was out of small talk on that subject. So, I jokingly asked, "So, do you know where Joni Mitchell's house is?" They stared at me for a few seconds. I thought they were angry at me. They looked at each other and finally the man said, "That's funny you should ask that. My wife used to live with her". Also meant to be a joke, I said, "Oh, the people on the chat list will love this" and they freaked. The wife looked at her husband and said, "Don't say any more". The husband seemed a bit less worried. I guess they thought you guys were a bunch of lunatics who might stalk her. It seems she is a good friend of Joni's and have known each other since the age of 7. She said they went to school together. Then the husband told me they all celebrated their 50th birthdays together. I don't pay much attention to little details about Joni's life so I don't know if this is true. Does anyone know if Joni spent any school years in Vancouver? As they got off the tram, we shook hands and the husband told me their names as she was trying to shut him up. I tried to reassure her as they walked out of the door but she had a terribly worried look on her face. They were an adorable couple. Mark in Sydney. Anyway, I got there and began to look for everyone I know from this list. The first person I saw was Lama (hiya!) and we gave each other a big hug. Then Ashara, Maggie & Rose appeared. We could hear Paz playing, but couldn't see him yet. Then I realized I'd been in such a hurry to get there that I forgot to pack - no sleeping bag, no tent... Rose said she had space on the floor of her nearby hotel room, which sounded like the Waldorf to me at the moment. So we settled in and wondered aloud who the hundreds of people sitting around us were - and we started singing Woodstock. Then (sadly) I woke up. Guess I must be missing you all - lurking too much, working too much too. Hmmm... someone more talented than me could use that in a song. Sorry to everyone else I know here. The dream was apparently too short to include you all. Recently I made it a point to. Surprisingly Dog Eat Dog, an album I love, isn't that easy to run to. Don Juan's Wreck is a great one though. I use a treadmill - and just about when it comes time for Paprika Plains - you can slow down your pace and use the incline - after that you can get yourself into a nice pace for the rest of the recording. Any other runners who have album recommendations? I'd like to hear about any artists, but if it's not Joni related - you can contact me "off digest." Hey, did I just make up a new phrase? I thought I had them all (tee hee) Laura http://www.smokymountainnews.com/issues/02_06/02_22_06/art_rec_div.html Joni Mitchell Anything that moves me, influences me. - - Joni Mitchell Every time I try to clean out my attic, I end up sitting in the dark, listening to a stack of 45s and old vinyl LPs - a musical trek from my misguided youth to my mature years. This time, I found Joni Mitchell, whose life has kept pace with mine through thick and thin for the better part of 50 years. From the time this lovely young woman did Both Sides Now until she cut Sex Kills, she has been a kind of emotional echo for many of Americas aging baby boomers. Jonis interviews were almost as good as her lyrics. I remember her optimism in the 70s when she said, Weve got to get ourselves back to the garden. When the gossip magazines asked her about her nervous breakdown, she said that depression might be the sand that makes the pearl. Later, after therapy, a divorce and soul searching through an unproductive period, she wryly commented, When you get rid of the demons, sometimes the angels fly away too. Then, Joni got angry. Why are they cutting down all the trees? she asked. She sang I Wish I Had a River I Could Skate Away On. She began to take her lyrics from the front pages of the newspaper: stories of battered wives, drugs, kids shooting kids. She cut a strange and wonderful record with Charlie Mingus that bewildered her fans. Sometimes, she talked back to the audience. When critics advised her to return to her popular, upbeat themes, she said, I never wanted to be a human jukebox. In truth, she ended up being much more than an entertainer. She became a poet and social critic. I guess it cost her, but she made an album called Violent Indigo anyway. I still love Sex Kills. The ulcerated ozone, These tumors of the skin - This hostile sun beating down on This massive mess were in! And the gas leaks And the oil spills And sex sells everything And sex kills... Sex kills... Oh, my! No one wants to dance to that! Jonis not going to compromise, I guess. Let me recommend a documentary that puts it all together in a gratifying tribute that reveals both sides now. Its called Joni Mitchell: Woman of Heart and Mind, and its available on Amazon.com (to purchase) and Netflex (to rent). There are also three DVDs each attempts to feature her awesome musical output.
