I have been thinking of you a lot, and my heart stopped when I read your sad news. Huge sigh. Big hug. People will tell you where they've gone They'll tell you where to go But till you get there yourself you never really know I just "got there" myself, losing my dad last week -- my rock and my anchor of 52 years. (Thank you so much to all who wrote -- I *will* answer you all individually when time and energy allow. I'm really spacy and disconnected these days.) Mon cher triplet de Joniville (c'est toi, non?), I hope you don't mind if I intermingle my grief with yours for a minute -- I don't want to intrude on yours in any way, because it is so deep and personal. I'm just trying to hold your hand a bit and share your sorrow. I think you might appreciate this poem that a friend sent me yesterday (copied below). Reader beware: It's raw, I think it's too raw. Preface from my friend (a French professor who specializes in poetry): Here is one of the most beautiful poem I know about loss and the feeling it leaves inside. It is not mine, I wish (but I am not that talented). It is by born British but naturalized American poet W.H. Auden. "Funeral Blues" Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone, Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone. Silence the pianos and with muffled drum Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come. Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead Scribbling on the sky the message He is Dead, Put cripe bows round the white necks of the public doves, Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves. He was my North, my South, my East and West, My working week and my Sunday rest, My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song, I thought that love would last forever: 'I was wrong' The stars are not wanted now, put out every one; Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun; Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood. For nothing now can ever come to any good. - ---------- Take care of yourself, dear Walt, and strike every chord that you feel. Let the walls come tumbling down when necessary. And may your Robert sleep in heavenly peace. That peace, as you know, is the best consolation for your pain. Love is precious, and so are you. So are we all. That's what I think. Patti P. I cannot express to you the feelings I have for you and Robert. It has been a long tome coming and it will be a long time... It has been a hard week for me as well. My dear friend Susan (Cowsill) who lost her brother Barry to that bitch Katrina also lost her brother William this past weekend. She had planned a repast for Barry at the Kerry Irish Pub on Domdi-Gras coming and now it is for the 2 of them. I am helping produce the memorial with some gear and of course I will be there to support the family and to play music with them in the joyous celebration of their lives thru the second line. I sincerely wish you a second line if thru the jmdl or thru your own community and family in the hood. I know you know, but Robert be calm now and in a better place and indeed you should as well be inspired by that grace. The sadness that you feel for the loss of the here and now should be replaced by the feelings of your past together and the hope that you shall be together again in another place. My dear friend Rodolfo Garcia was diagnosed with cancer and is at the Mayo Clinic as we speak. He had been caring for my dad making house calls thru the last few months and caring for him in a way that is far beyond the expected care one receives from the profession currently. My sister was so happy when he took over my dads case in December when he was at the door of death. Rodolfo and I are joined thru music from 20 odd years ago and I know my dad was comforted by him at this late date. He is so young and has so much going for him and so much to give, yet he is faced with a horrible prognosis. I am constantly challenged with all this grief in my life as well in the parallel with people like you that I love so much. Walt, heal fast brother along with sister Patti, Bree, and Donna and all of us who have lost so much recently.
