As I do now I have to ask myself, what difference does it make? I don't care enough to even mull it over. Many don't like Joni Mitchell at all. I have friends that won't even allow me to play her music. They surely don't respect her if they won't even listen to her. Some can't take her voice, others think she is full of beans. That is, those that have even heard of her, which is few. Up until even a year ago I would have still been believing that 'they just don't get it.' But as I wrote yesterday, maybe I don't get it. All relative I suppose." Let me help you out on this one, Mack. You get it. Your friends noted above don't. An amazing percentage of the artists who make music and the critics who listen to all of it think Joni is among the greatest, if not the greatest. (Stevie Nicks comes to mind recently - thanks, Les). None of them think that about Britney (which is not to say that her "performance skills" are unacknowledged). That is not to say that Britney is not successful, by at least some measures and perhaps in her own mind's eye. Nor does it mean that you or I "get" most things, much less everything. But we get this true thing. Life's got plenty of shades of gray to mull over and get wrong. But some things are close to black and white, and others are transparent. :-) Bobsart ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Feb 2006 05:16:17 -0800 (PST) From: Bob Muller Subject: NJC Britney the cause or the cure? Being a patriot means that you don't turn your back on serving your country just because you aren't getting everything you want. You work at getting it. You work within the system, slowly and diligently, to try to change things. As a gay patriot, you let people get to know you and respect you, and then eventually (maybe) you tell them you're gay. What almost always happens is: it changes their minds. One at a time, they change their minds, because they've already come to know and respect and like you as a person and a comrade. They realize you're no different than they are, and you're the same person they always knew. Then things begin to change and become more fair for everyone. It's not everyone that starts so high as Joni. Some are ugly ducks, and they take their time to turn into swans. Joni never made 10000000 $ when she was 19, so, in a way that joni never was, Britney was "chosen" to be very special. She is in a position that only few can say that "they were there". Most of you think that she would fade, but isn't that what they said about Madonna back then? Go and listen to Madonna today and you'd be surprised by the spirituality in her songs, the production that is so unique and the music that must come from a pop-master mind. False one or not, i don't know, but that's the nature of art. 15-20 years from now, who knows, maybe Britney would write some amazing songs about what it's like to be Britney Spears. Hey, i'd listen to that. I don't like Britney now, that i must say, but when looking for "who's to blame" for the Britney tradition, let's not leave Joni out. Pop-controlers like Britney are the exact result of the "heavyness" Joni and her generation brought to the pop-world, and since no one listens to lyrics, youngsters have chosen to be as silly and stupid has they can be in a sane mind. They'd better lick their lips and dance rather than listen to the blues. Britney is the contrast of Joni, and, in a very sad way, her failure. Secretly and from a very inner place i'd tell you that Joni likes all singers and musicians, no matter what she says to the press, wherever they are. Having worked in several in-patient and out-patient psychiatric treatment(?) programs.... I always used music...movies and books to help tired, worn-out, burned-out souls reconnect. "Song To A Seagull" "Clouds" "Ladies Of The Canyon" "Court And Spark" Joni's early works were especially helpful to many....some cuts from "Blue" and also from "Miles Of Aisles". Joni's more recent CD's were less soothing, I found, to some yearning souls who related more to melody...some to melody then lyrics..."Raised On Robbery" always evoked amazing responses., as did "Come In From The Cold". "For the Roses" is also very good for the broken-souls needing/wanting healing. I've been able to make significant "break-throughs" with Joni's earlier work than more recent..."Sex Kills" would be completely off-limits and "The Circle Game" and "Both Sides Now" were always so, so helpful and loved. Sometimes the melodies would sound "safe" enough to evoke wonder...then I shared lyrics...one thing I can assure you...Joni speaks to us all...regardless of how an individual interprets a line or two...a tune or two...it's a liberating process. There are also a lot of the "New Age" CD's that have been very helpful but without the capacity for increased self-awareness that Joni evokes... "Quiet Music"...Steve Roach "Atmospheric Conditions"...John Themis "Narada...Equinox"...Sampler One Los Incas..."From The Other Side Of The Volcano" and "The Door of the Wind" "Wildflowers"...Judy Collins....this entire album is so soothing....I've used it with individuals in "quiet rooms" (you can imagine what those rooms contained).... One extremely fascinating thing...the album covers of Joni's earlier work allowed amazing insight for many, many people I've worked with....sometimes I'd begin with one small section of an album cover...expand to the entire cover and then we'd explore some of the individual, wondrous pieces. More later IF this is helpful....let me know. Hoping this is a good weekend for all.... Bo - --------------------------------- Yahoo! Like I said, you have to be a part of it (or want to be a part of it) to understand it, and there are as many reasons for gays and lesbians joining the military as there are gays and lesbians who have joined and who will join. It's a personal freedom that we continue to fight for, and part of that fight includes involving ourselves most personally. Back in 1992, I was an active member of the San Antonio Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Veterans of America. Their motto was: "Right to Serve." Here's an old web page that mentions the national GLBVA: http://www.aver.us/pressrls/97-04.htm And ... what a hoot! At least in 1997, the national group was still using the logo (eagle with pink triangle) that I designed for the San Antonio group in 1992 (using Harvard Graphics). The GLBVA eventually morphed into today's American Veterans for Equal Rights: http://www.aver.us We are many, and it's important to us, and we continue to work to make the military accessible and equal for EVERYONE who wishes to be a part of it.
