My word of the week. I've been using it as much as possible. As a noun, as a verb, with or without the "the". As an adjective, I suppose it would be "bollocksy" and as an adverb, "bollocksily".<< Hi Catherine, Haven't heard these adjective or adverb forms, but why not? Heard 'cuntsy' as an adjective on the Sopranos recently ("Don't go cuntsy on me now" was more or less the quote). One important addition Catherine, is the collective term, generally, in my experience, 'a load of bollocks', As an adjective / phrasal verb we usually say something is/was 'bollocksed up'. Catalan and Spanish have many expressions (some euphemistic) for this part of the body. 'Collons' (balls), 'pebrots' (peppers) and 'ous' (eggs) are three examples. Maybe in Galicia too (Hola Emiliano)? 'Tocar' is the verb here for 'to touch', so 'un tocacollons' is someone who the Sopranos would say is a person who 'busts my balls'. In the UK I think I recall that football (and boxing) commentators usually refer to this area of the body as the 'midriff', when the athlete is unluckily enough to catch a punch or a kick in this area. In Spain /Catalonia they use 'stomach' (barriga, panxa), don't know why. In Argentina they have interesting variations too. Juan Antonio Pizzi, an Argentine footballer who played in Barcelona some years ago, used 'macanudo', his version of 'collonut' / 'cojonoudo' (from cojones, obviously, remember Madeleine Albright's use of this?) to mean 'fecking great'. It caused great hilarity and brings back great memories of a famous, nay epic, football/soccer game where Barcelona won 5-4 with a last-gasp goal from Pizzi. 'Maconudo' / 'Maconut' was the headline in the sports press the following day. And before I forget, where the brits say that something cost 'an arm and a leg', the Catalans use 'un ou' (one testicle). There is a Spanish expression which goes 'Manda Huevos', literally 'send eggs /testicles'), but it's used as an exclamation, similar to 'what a nerve'. Any comments from Spanish speakers gratefully received. I could go on but I have work to do. And don't get me started on 'lamb's fries'... mike in barcelona PS If you don't like it, bollocks to you. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Feb 2006 03:41:52 -0800 (PST) From: Smurf Subject: Re: What to cover? -- njc - --- Bob Muller wrote: > It was released on 45, as far as I know recorded > only by O.C. I almost used the word "bollocks" in a work meeting I was at today. (e.g. now that a certain IT person has left and she was the only one that really knew a particular arcane and antiquated tracking system that we use, things are likely to get very bollocksed up before they get any better.) But I chickened out and out and instead, said, "things will likely get worse before they get better." Always the optimist! Bollocks! Lieve, I've just managed to catch up with the digests of the last 6 weeks or so, and see that several people (like Kate and Catherine, see below) have been asking about Colin. Others have done the same before. I haven't reacted before, because I wasn't sure it would be appropriate, but now I think I should just quickly put you in the picture. Colin unsuscribed about a year ago. I don't want to go into detail, but he felt there had been some unpleasant personal comments which other people seemed to "accept" without protest, so he felt unsupported and uncared for, and left. I must say I did not agree with him and I thought he would change his mind. I explained to him many times that things often feel much more personal in e-mails than they are intended, that people have zillions of reasons why they don't react (other than indifference or negativity) on a list such as this one, that he had many friends here etc, but in the end it made no difference, he did not resubscribe. It was a combination with many other aspects in his life: worries about his health, big demands on his time with the dog breeding, etc. But all together he's fine, he's doing well and coping with the health problems remarkably well. He's really learnt to count his blessings, and he and John will celebrate their 25 years together soon. I spoke with him just before I left for the Jonifest in France last summer. He was very tempted to jump in his car at that very last minute and turn up, but then a new litter of puppies made the date impossible. Anyway I would like to think, as I've told him, that he can change his mind at any time, that the door is open and he can resubscribe whenever he wants, but I'm beginning to have doubts that it will happen, because I really think he's no longer fretting about it but has literally "moved on". I'm not in very regular contact, I speak with him on the phone every couple of months, and have been to visit him once. I hope this message helps to answer some of your questions without being too gossipy. All the best to you all, Lieve in London. - ---- Catherine and Kate wrote: Date: Sat, 11 Feb 2006 15:12:12 -0500 (EST) From: Catherine McKay > Subject: Re: The Long and Winding Road... - --- Kate Bennett > wrote: > >Hello, > I'm back on the jmdl. Or ... why? - --I initially thought that non violent drug offenders, in the absence of drug treatment and/or rehabilitation programs, should be given the chance to improve their lives and learn the positive lessons that the military purports to teach. But not only do I not think they should be forced into prison with violent persons, I don't feel they should have to die in the Bush-Cheney oil venture either. And what difference does it make what drugs one has taken in the past when they are being sent to die on the battlefield, if they are fit at the proposed time of service? Being a patriot means that you > don't turn your back on serving your country just because you aren't getting > everything you want. You work at getting it. You work within the system, > slowly and diligently, to try to change things. - --Not sure I agree with this assessment of patriotism but that is what opinion is for although the last sentence of that definition is right on, in my mind. Don't feel that someone that doesn't serve in the military is turning their back on their country in any sense. What almost always happens is: it changes their minds. > One at a time, they change their minds, because they've already come to know > and respect and like you as a person and a comrade. They realize you're no > different than they are, and you're the same person they always knew. Then > things begin to change and become more fair for everyone. - --Unfortunately Lori, there are way too many cases where this is not the case and one was too much. - --Despite what you write is the current case inside the military I still don't understand why a homosexual would enlist in these times. I just got one, a Turtle Beach Video Advantage USB, and it seems to work well, and it comes with software for editing. Amazon sells it for $93. You need to have the v 2.0 USB port on your computer, Windows XP, and a fast processor. A separate hard drive for capture is recommended, and a good video card doesn't hurt, either. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007PO3II/ref=pd_sbs_e_1/102-4793948-3203322?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=172282 If you are using a stand-alone dvd recorder, just plug the video and audio outs from the VCR into the inputs of the dvd recorder and you are good to go. Although, if this is just a one-time thing, it might make sense to find someone who already has the setup to do it for you- since installing software/hardware is time consuming, and sometimes there are glitches and problems due to different frame rates.
