Terry Gross interviewed Neil & the director who made a film about his new songs. At one point Terry asked him if he felt differently about the songs after recovering from surgury. Neil said they put coils on platinum in his brain... She did not re-ask the question. Anyway, it was worthwhile hearing in a post-dope, post-surgery way. I'm glad he has loving people around him. He was a fine producer, singer, bandleader, and songwriter. It was nice to see the industry give some time to his songs last night. That said, the production was all flash powder and no muse. I enjoyed McCartney's "Helter Skelter". I'll keep my remarks on the rest of the evening positive.. All the best, Jim L'Hommedieu PS, I'm sure RR will flesh out the disappointments! :) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 09 Feb 2006 20:05:41 -0800 From: "Mark Scott" Subject: Re: Joni and Carnegie Scott Price wrote: >> > Joni's devotion to her cats is well documented. I've always suspected. Yeah, Sly is a mess. He looked like a common man who had a series of industrial accidents and hasn't yet become a super-hero. He looked like an unholy cross between a keyboardist and a shotgun shack (after Katrina). And yeah, because you and Muller and Niki Dakota at WYSO turned me on to "Extraordinary Machine", I also think Fionna Apple wuz mugged. Stevie Wonder, Sting, and McCartney have plenty of Grammies at home but >will the next one in nest glitter for them so>? On the other hand, if she had "a big head" before, what's she gonna be like now that she's been nominated? Ditto on on that Springsteen comment. "Devils" is Nebraska without a cause. The bonus disc from the 3CD "Essentials" gets much more player-time here. But Bruce will be back on top. He understands redemption pretty well. :) (Hi Rose.) All the best, Jim L'Hommedieu RR said, >I'm still in shock from the travesty of seeing Kelly Clarkson win out over Fiona Apple*, Sheryl Crow, Gwen Stefani and Paul McCartney. Hell in a bucket. Madonna is the hottest 47 year old on this jumpin' green sphere. Alicia Keys looked so hot. Oh...uh...the music, yeah.. Actually, this was far from the worst grammy show ever, or I'm just getting old and less cranky. Coldplay, boring U2 copy. Sugarland, passable. McCartney, not half bad for an old guy...great singing on Helter Skelter. I find "Fine Line" a bit of a snooze. U2, you're starting to grow on me. Is there an ointment for that? Faith Hill/John Legend/Kelly Clarkson...I'm running to the fridge for a mayonnaise on white bread sandwich. I love my animals too... also, she's already been there done that with Carnegie, her long career, & the tnt tribute... I think it is hard for some of her fans to get why she wouldn't be there & if she was smart she might have claimed to be under the weather herself but since she's honest she told what I think is probably the truth... she's a lonely painter & would rather stay in her box of paints... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 09 Feb 2006 20:34:34 -0800 From: "Mark Scott" Subject: Re: dolly and both sides now. - and it gets worse! First of all, Mark David Chapman. Isn't he supposed to be obsessed with Joni these days? Don't think I'd want him stalking me around NYC. Secondly, perhaps Joni WAS there--either in drag or just incognito. That way she could enjoy the show in private while at the same time avoid intimidating the performers with her known presence. Or perhaps Joni stayed away simply because that particular sort of environment makes her self-conscious and extremely uncomfortable, and (like the new Garbo) she now "vants to be alone" with only her closest friends and family. What ever the case may have been, I'm certainly willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. After all, she's earned at least THAT much. ;-) XXXOOO, Billy NP: "Been On A Train" by the late great Laura Nyro. ================================= In a message dated 2/9/06, owner-joni-digest@smoe.org wrote: > ...Joni had committed from day one to be in attendance. > Throughout the planning process she was very supportive of the tribute. > Four days before the event, they received the exact letter that was read to > the audience regarding her sick cat. Nobody I know is talking about it between communities, only within their own. Laurent and Vince have got the ball rolling on this so I'll say nothing on it. I will however mention the knee-jerk reaction to free speech, or freedom of the press, as if it actually existed anywhere on this planet. Free Speech, like the UN's universal rights to education, food, freedom of religion etc are aspirations, not realities. Everyone knows that there is no real freedom of the press, that sometimes news which is anti-government or anti-clerical, or whatever, reaches the general public, but please, give me a break. I'd love to see a world where the press was free, but don't expect to. For this reason I say 'knee-jerk' as this reaction, especially from the press and many liberal (and Liberal) individuals, has obscured the real issue which Vince and Laurent have discussed, and I hope will continue to discuss. That issue is hate, (dis)respect and (in)sensitivity to other individuals and groups, from small groups to major religions. There is no freedom of the press. Get over it. And to use press freedom in order to explain/justify/excuse the publication of these cartoons is as low as we can go. IMHO. And that goes for anti-Semitic cartoons too. mike in bcn np Michele Faber - Mar Vista Sessions ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2006 #53 **************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe -------
