And she surpassed my expectations. And judging from the enthusiastic cheers, ovations and even tears, the collective audience's too. The concert was supposed to start at 8pm but we were ushered in at around 8:20 and were seated 10 minutes later. The place is intimate and can only hold about 250 tops. I can't help but notice the demographic profile of the attendees. Mostly 40ish-50ish. I saw a couple of professors from school quequing up. The sex ratio is about equal. But enough of those details. When RLJ came on stage, I was surprised to see a petite woman who wore a rather unflattering black long-sleeved shirt and loose pants bedecked with what looks like retro-looking flowers, and heavy clogs. She bowed several times before she slid on the guitar and said that she doesn't know how to start. She is endearing and joke-y without becoming familiar. She said she loved the first time she performed at the Arts Center 2 years ago to howls and cheers from the audience. She started the set with "Weasel and the White Boys Cool" that spotlighted her guitar solos and that voice that eschews vibrato but can wail in uniterrupted vocal lines so out-of-this-world and ethereal. She changed keys several times and even approached the songs with notes transposed half-an octave or so. What I found amazingis how nimble and dexterous her fingers are when plucking the guitar. Like she is just casually moving her hands this way and that. Then when she opens her mouth, I am even more amazed at how she never falters in the high notes. As if something more primeval had to come out deep down in her bowels and she is just a medium that transmits that sound. I have listened to RLJ slightly longer than Joni and I feel that I (and my sister in Manila) have this connection to RLJ that is almost like blood relations. We know her songs so well that we seem to think we 'know' her in some higher, maybe astral, levels. RLJ then sang "Ugly Man" off her latest album with many musical asides. The people like that kind of musical banter with her and she smiles while she sings and even added a few words. She, in the grand tradition of cabaret singing, even acted out the songs that make you think for a moment that she is singing only to you. Or telling you something private. She sang a new song called "Friends with Money" (or some-such title) and she said it is for a movie. She later quipped that when she added that song in the movie, it "became a better movie" to a deafening whistles, cheers and applause. But she mined the inherent drama of "Last Chance Texaco" and even (deliberately or not, I can't tell) omitted words but the immediacy of the song especially that pleading and heartbreaking "... its the last chance..." was communicated to us beyond words. She had fun with Dylan's "Times They Are-A-Changin'". She said that she has been humming that song the whole day that she had to hum it to us tonight. Funny thing is, she forgot the lyrics and asked the audience to help her. Unlike Ella Fitzgerald in her historic Berlin concert in 1960 where she substituted her own words to "Mack the Knife" when she forgot the lyrics, RLJ enlisted the people to help her. "I know that half of the people in the audience are singers, so help me out" she said at one point. It was quite hilarious to hear adoring fans dictate lyrics to her while she sings. Then she stops midway and ask for the second stanza. It is like having a funtime with a friend where singing is like an improv. Then she said that her bacjk is wet from sweat. "YOu wont know it because you don't sing continuously and back to back". Then of course when she started playing the familiar instrumental to "Chuck E's in Love", people are swaying to the cadence of the beat and provides the bass-like walking lines to her singing. It was good to hear her sing it again. After the song, someone asked: "So who is Chuck E?" RLJ replied while drinking water "Its rather late for that". One thing I noticed is that the audience can potentially get out of control since the venue is intimate and you can tell that RLJ herself enjoys the banters, but she she never slips into a kind of overfamiliarity that lets other people wise-cracks beyond that is acceptably funny and appropriate. And the songs she sang tonight heavily draws from her debut album, "Pirates" and "Flying Cowboys" and with occasional detours to others. But just when we have seen enough of this talented lady and delightfully seeing her giggle at one point like a mirthful girl, she removed the guitar from her and bowed several times. Then she approached the camera and said: "I am going to do what I don't do nowadays. I will sing this particular song". Then singing a capella, she launched into "Something Cool". But oh, what goose bumps she gave us because it is apparent that while we are hearing someone who borrows lines from different stanzas of the song, she still managed to communicate a narrative of a woman who must have seen life at, well, both sides now. Her fragile voice gets broken at times. She never finishes a phrase sometimes too. And she sometimes stops for 4 seconds and this is where I finally realized and discovered through a live performance how silence conveys much much more. She was wiping her mouth at one point, then putting her fingers underneath her eyes as though she is wiping sweat, but as she went on into the heart and heart of song for about 6 minutes, the wiping of something liquid from her face became almost uncomfortably like wiping tears. And when she sings in that ragged and stop-sing-start fashion sometimes imitating a man's voice or maybe it is a woman's voice crying while singing, people started to get really really still. Some sniffles there. A clearing of throat will encourage many others to clear theirs as though to hide the incipient tears. But what really made me misty-eyed (which I discovered later after the song), is beacuse she was moving her hands erratically. Like she wants someone to feed her the lyrics but none came from the audience. Then she would fold her arms sideways and place the top palms of both her hands to her sides like wanting to fly and make awkward movements while singing and coaxing the song to come out. At one point, some strands of her hair fell because of her vigorous gestural movements conveying oh so articulately the feeling of loss and desolation. And she would stop and look at us blankly as though reminiscing something, then launch into another phrase. When she ended the song, she prolonged the thin high note for a long time, it is like hearing someone cry softly and with great pain. Then covering her face, she bowed so low and long, the audience was too moved to applaud. Then she smiled and quickly withdraw to the dark corners of the stage. Then the applause came. Loud. Louder. Ovation. People were seen wiping their faces. I have never seen such spectacle since Marcel Marceau came to Manila many years ago and performed a 2-minute "Birth, Maturity, Old Age, Death" to the strains of Mozart's "Air" that got almost everyone teary-eyed in that very touching evocation of time passing. RLJ then went to the piano and sang "Coolsville," "Pirates (So Long Lonely Avenue)", "We Belong Together" and "Living it Up". It was odd that she chose a darkened part to play the piano and since I was seated facing the slant of the upright piano, I can see a diagonal slice of her face. With the chiaroscuro lighting and with her songs that sounded so beautiful accompanied by the piano, it is like hearing a distant voice in a darkened room. Like a voice from the past. She enjoined the audience to sing with her in "Living It Up". She said: "Come sing with me even if you dont know the lyrics". "Pirates" had everyone stomping their feet. Afterthat set, she stood up and bowed several times and left the stage. She was given a standing ovation and about 8 minutes of uninterrupted applause but she didnt come out. I am so glad and happy I saw her at last. Now I am flying to NYC in the early morning and see another concert. This is the best week for me -- music-wise. Sorry for the long post. I am still obviously high and drunk with the magic of RLJ. Joseph in CH (soon NYC) np: humming of the machine somewhere - --------------------------------- Nouveau : tiliphonez moins cher avec Yahoo! If it is, you can ask at JFK for directions as this would be a least expensive option (whatever the shuttle charges, maybe $2. and the $2. subway fare right into Manhattan- ask someone at the subway station which stop to get off that's clostest to Park Central.) As many of you know, I work at an international airport ... and on many an occasion have met the likes of Margaret Atwood, Thomas King, the Governor General; peeps from all walks of life....and so it seems, even Joni. !!!!!! Yes indeed, Joni Mitchell was at the Winnipeg International Airport, as she had just been visiting her parents in Sask. The weather on the prairie here has been crazy warm/cold/warm again, and thus the boggyfogg rolled in....and if you know anything about fog on the prairie...forget about flying. When a rolling thunder chases the wind, ;-), on top of that...yea, a thunder storm in the middle of winter!!.. .well, needless to say,the airport in Saskatoon gets socked in something terrible. And so it went today. Joni's plane had to make an emergency landing down here and whilst the fog was wrapped around this faire city like a heavy wool blanket, she made an appearance in the lounge behind security, where I work. Anyway....Joni was very excited about the Tribute, smoked like a fiend, (hackhack) (of course they LET her) , she was madder than a hornet that the Relay Store didnt carry her brand of ciggys....alas and alack. She snarged back several DuMaurier and caused quite the commotion....Joni who??? . oh yea, that thing on tv last night....She thought she got ripped majorly by the small bits and bites of her on that CBC show, and plans to raise a little hell, and will no doubt say so in New York...hoping that she's get her due attention. Amazing woman. And so short. Well, next to this nearly 6' tall amazonian ;-)) Awww she's a sweetheart, feisty and wonderful to hang with. No worries about not having anything to say...those of you who have met her can attest to the fact that she is more than capable of holding the convo while you hold the sil=ence ;-)) Happened to mention my guitar , and she told me all about the journey to open tuning, so y'all dont need to fill me in on any of that.
