Shakin' All Over, a two-hour CBC-TV special airing at 8 p.m. on January 30, shines the spotlight on many of these pioneers. The show is based on Nicholas Jennings' excellent 1998 book, Before The Gold Rush: Flashbacks To The Dawn Of The Canadian Sound, which chronicled the country's '60s musical revolution. Narrator Jian Ghomeshi and Jennings, who conducted more than 60 interviews across North America for the special, introduce you to a number of bands and artists who remain well-known today, as well as several you've probably never heard of unless you're a major Canadian music history junkie. "Not many of these shows get made, and there's a good reason," says Jennings of the three years he put into the project. "They're so time-consuming and labour-intensive. To get as many artists and as many songs as we got into the show was a huge amount of work." In addition to the usual suspects you'd expect to find, like The Guess Who, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, Shakin' All Over pays as much attention to relative unknowns like Vancouver's The Seeds Of Time, Ottawa's The Esquires and Montreal's Les Sultans. "There was a mini scene in every major city that supported a healthy roster of bands," explains Jennings. "When you look closely at those artists, they were as much a part of the scene as the big icons. "For every Randy Bachman or Gordon Lightfoot, there were all these other artists that they listened to and respected. We were able to make it like a love-in, where all the musicians talked about each other and what great songs their colleagues wrote." Jennings also spoke to a variety of current musicians b including Sarah Harmer, Matthew Good, Hawksley Workman, 54.40's Neil Osborne, Barenaked Ladies' Steven Page, Sarah Slean and Sloan's Jay Ferguson b to get their perspectives on their musical forefathers. "If you listen to records by The Ugly Ducklings or The Great Scots, they could almost be a hit in this day, because it's so contemporary with the revival of that sound by The White Stripes and The Hives," says Ferguson. The special is brimming with rarely seen archival TV footage from Canada and the U.S., while some classic songs are given new life by modern artists to help bring things full circle. If you miss the show on TV, Jennings says that EMI Canada plans to release it on DVD along with at least one companion CD highlighting some of the memorable music to emerge from the early days of Canadian rock. "Canadian songs of the '60s stand the test of time," he insists. "Canada has always had the strength of songcraft." bSteve McLean This story can be accessed online at http://www.chartattack.com/damn/2006/01/2709.cfm ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Jan 2006 03:40:22 EST From: JRMCo1@aol.com Subject: Tom Rush: Music Review MUSIC REVIEW: Tom Rush BY BILL CRAIG SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT Sunday, January 22, 2006 The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen last night Tom Rush is probably not the first name that comes up in a discussion of major players on the'60's coffeehouse playing field. But it would hardly be a stretch to describe Rush as a folk-music icon, a designation earned for his role in defining the sound of American folk and blues during the genre's revival a few decades ago. Not only did Rush contribute his own high-powered lyrics and melodies, he introduced the American listening public to the work of then undiscovered and now superstars such as Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell and James Taylor. And as a full house at the Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen learned last night, the 64-year old Rush hasn't quit yet. Opening the center's five-show Music Connection Series, Rush knocked out his own folk and blues tunes from back in the day but also continued the vital work of sharing the best music of writers you may never hear coming out of your FM radio speakers. Decked out in the folk-music version of business casual, a black shirt and blue jeans, Rush charmed the theater of baby boomers with a pair of sets that were part music, part stories and part Rush's commentaries on life in America infused with his deadpan humor. A Tom Rush show is nothing more complex than a man, his guitar and his music. And absolutely nothing more is required. His stripped-to-the-bone but quietly passionate delivery of tunes such as Mitchell's "The Circle Game" and his own "No Regrets" were stunning reminders that well-crafted lyrics need no bells, whistles or synthesizers. Rush claimed that he fell in love with blues while studying English at Harvard, attracted by what the blues masters "did with the syntax." Among the evening's highlights was his gritty take on Sleepy John Estes' "Drop Down Mamma." The Music Connection Series continues through May with shows by Al Stewart, Christine Lavin, Jesse Colin Young and Jesse Winchester. Next up is British folk/rocker Stewart, who has a Feb. 4 date at Glen Allen. Jim Savage wrote: "Greetings to everyone on the JMDL,....... Switching gears now, how many of you live in the great state of New Jersey? " "Greetings" back at you, Jim. I'm not sure I could name all the New Jersey people, but you're not alone. Rosie (that's Rose Joy from NJ) - do you have a list of NJ -ites on the JMDL? Maybe we should set up a voluntary contact list within the group - just names, e-mails, and maybe states of residence. Yeah, I know, security, paranoia, etc. Bob Sartorius (bobsart) from Parsippany-Troy Hills, NJ PS - I dunno about the "unconditional" love representation - but I have used the word "altruistic" about my feelings (and, I think, about the feelings of many on this list). I truly hope that this woman, who has done so much (even if egoism impelled her work more than altruism) to enrich my life (and those of so many others lucky and/or wise enough to have discovered and embraced her art), is blessed in return in terms of health and happiness. Some may feel that such an attitude on my part is unbecoming, over-the-top, or perhaps symptomatic of dreamery, delusion or even egoism - and perhaps even potentially threatening in some way to Joni's psyche. I concede that those baser instincts exist side by side with the nobler ones in me - and, I think, in all of us - - doing battle like Joni's eagle and serpent. But I do believe the noble ones are also alive. And, given the extent to which she has touched my life with her art - and her character - I think it would be ignoble of me to not acknowledge it, for fear of appearing overly self absorbed or self-interested. So, with respect to addressing an "issue" like Joni's attendance at the concert, the perception of "conflict of interest" or "self-serving, suspicious reasoning" will inevitably surface, unless one chooses to remain altogether silent for fear of giving the appearance of acting wholly or primarily from one's baser instincts. I'd rather acknowledge the conflict and discuss the issue. Apropos of this, in an earlier post - in the wake of the news of Joni's not coming - I asked "how will the artists feel?" Although I intended that question to be rhetorical, I think Jay Lustig shed light on the answer in his story, which quoted from Elton John's famous (to us, anyway) mini-speech from the TNT tribute, which began more completely "I just want to say what an honor it is to actually be on this show. I mean, every artist backstage is going 'Oh my God, I can't believe we're actually playing Joni Mitchell's songs, with her sitting right there in the box'. I've played before the Queen of England, and it's not so intimidating as playing in front of such a great musician". Lustig goes on to write "On Wednesday at Carnegie Hall, more than 20 other artists will get to experience that feeling, too..." One will be 16 year old Sonya Ktchell - "There aren't that many artists that are my favorites: it's like Joni Mitchell and the Beatles". We all recall that Elton John's was not the only heartfelt offering at the TNT tribute. There were also the "I love you's" of Ashley and Wynona Judd and KD Lang, the "thank you's" of Shawn Colvin, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Hilary Clinton, Susan Sarandon and James Taylor, the character acknowledgements of Laurence Fishburne and the glowing smiles from the audience. Which brings me to the point I'd like to make. Joni, if for some reason you can't come, our prayers are with you. If you decide not to, "we know you have your reasons, and we're sure they're all fine. ;-)" But if you can and do decide to come, it will be a mitzvah - bringing joy and pleasure to a few thousand people. Not just the joy of seeing you there, but the joy of being allowed to tell you they still love you. And giving is good for the soul - you'll feel better for the giving. And, of course, you'll feel good hearing again how much you're still loved and admired. Forget about the risk of appearing to be attending just to take your bows; we all know that's not where you're coming from. Your coming would be a blessing for all - - including for you. Which would, in turn, make us even happier. Assembly of Dust Rocks Attitash http://news.alpinezone.com/7695/ January 28, 2006 - 3:59 PM By AlpineZone News BARTLETT, New Hampshire b In honor of its Founder's Day, Attitash featured the group Assembly of Dust who performed to over 400 fans in the Attitash Grand Summit Hotel Ballroom in Bartlett, NH on Saturday night. Playing songs ranging in style from folk, country, funk, rock and reggae, fans moved and grooved to the up and coming "Jam" band for nearly three hours. Having recently opened for bands like the Allman Brothers and Dave Mathews, AOD left Attitash to perform at a Joni Mitchell tribute concert at Carnegie Hall. AOD recently released its newest album The Honest Hour. Assembly of Dust's musical line-up includes Reid Genauer and several of the East Coast's favorite underground players: keyboardist and co-songwriter writer Nate Wilson and bassist/backing vocalist John Leccese (both from Percy Hill), Moon Boot Lover drummer Andy Herrick, and guitarist/backing vocalist Adam Terrell from the collective known as Groovechild. The mix of ages reflected the bands musical variety and unique fan base with the youngest in attendance being 18 years of age and judging by the receding hairlines and grey hair of many of the others at the show, a good portion of the crowd was in their 40's, 50s and 60s. The band, of which three are natives of New Hampshire, enjoyed the trip back to their home state. Reid Genauer was thrilled at "the gorgeous sunset" and although "inspired by the sounds of the snow guns and the energy from the good New Hampshire oxygen there will be no time for making turns at Attitash because duty calls," he said referring to their trip to Carnegie Hall. Following up last year's Five Day Forty concert with AOD, Eric Fredrickson from Attitash and organizer of the show was pleased with how the evening went. "You just don't see this level of performer in Mt. Washington Valley very often. Everybody had a great time." Attitash is in the White Mountains of New Hampshire on Rt. 302 in Bartlett. During the winter Attitash offers 2 mountains with 70 trails and 22 miles of skiing and riding on 280 acres. He is undoutably a brilliant tunesmith as well as being an idiosyncratic if not seemingly a bit shy of a performer. I feel under his spell this year and subsequently have bought all 5 of his records. I can't wait to hear more of what he has to offer. And Hi to Wes, Bo and Rose too. I bet you guys were at the BSN concert in Camden a few years ago. I really lucked out as I was the "Official" reporter and photographer for jonimitchell.com that evening. It was an incredible once in a lifetime experience that I will never forget.
