Like I said, Eels are a total wildcard and there was no telling what E would do. This will be an interesting version of River. Joanne Shenandoah - Dawntreader: Glad I was wrong, for two reasons: 1- Dawntreader is one of my favorite Joni tunes; 2- it shows that singer-song matches are really off the charts as opposed to being more predictable - very cool. Sonya Kitchell - Trouble Child: Again, very cool because like Dawntreader this one just doesn't get much exposure - it shows that we're going deep, deep into Joni's songbook as opposed to just being a celebrity greatest hits revue. But the question remains - will the 80's Joni continued to be ignored? (Bryan, your choice of Chinese Cafe/Unchained Melody for Sedaka is an awesome pick, and I hope you're right...Joni segueing to 60's pop heaven - a good fit for him to be sure. I remember that feeling when I bought clothes for my mother and helped her dress because she had lost so much weight and become so weak from cancer. I have been in such denial about my mother-in-law being so sick because it brings back painful memories of my own mother dying, memories I still haven't worked through. When I talked to the lady at Delta to cancel my flight to NY it was not what I expected. I told her about my mother-in-law and said we don't know how it is going to turn out. She said, "we all know how it is going to turn out." That hit me hard. I talked for about 20 minutes with this Delta lady. I asked her if she was for real because she was more like a counselor or a minister than a reservations lady. I was shaking and in tears during the conversation and told her she was the first person to really reach me about what was going on. I am close friends with Marianne's sister, Annette, and we were talking about our common experiences right now with both her dad and my mother-in-law having brain tumors at the same time. It came up about how in denial I've been about my mother-in-law's condition. I can talk all about it medically in depth, but the thought of losing her is beyond me. I'm not ready for that. Don't the best of Joni's fans represented on JMDL not know that she has stated that she is no longer a musician? That she now classifies herself as a painter of words? Are we setting an example of allowing the artist the same freedom of choice we claim for ourselves? If we truly love Joni Mitchell for her ingenious artistic abilities, should we not follow the thread of consistency with unconditional love and understanding? As sad as it is to me that she does not want to be a musician any longer, should I not respect her decision? If I do, than I do not need a reason for her decision to attend, or not. It's just the way it is. Hi Cat, Yes, I know that about Joni because I learned it through the JMDL sources provided here... seems like it was in a filmed interview where Joni said she isn't into music any more. I personally love her no matter what is or isn't her fancy. She catches mine for what she's done and for whatever she's doing. I don't have and never had expectation that Joni will/would attend the Tribute but have always the hope she will. What a nice image in my imagination, Joni sitting in the best seat in Carnegie Hall, like a queen, looking down at the stage... me catching only a glimpse of her, a mental painting that would never fade. She doesn't like being thought of as a queen though it seems. She instead prefers for people to just say, "hi Joni" to her like she is a friend they pass on the street... not oooed and awwwwed at. That is something else I learned on the JMDL through a quote of her that was posted. Question us on please! Questions are great for prompting discussion, and that is what this list is all about Questions lead to information being shared and helps us to learn and grow here. Many of us are at the age where having living parents is a luxury we can't afford to take for granted. My father died a few years ago and I still miss him every day. I didn't have the opportunity to say goodbye to him as his death was unexpected and before I knew it he was gone - don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone? My personal advice is to take advantage of the time left without grieving in the presence of the person slipping away. Try to have fun with them (when they're feeling up to it) and share jokes and happy memories, not tears for their loss. Take it or leave it. My mother is in better health than I am myself and I hope to have her around for many more years but I see the signs of aging. When she's gone I will move up a generation and finally acknowledge myself in the third stage of the "triple goddess" hierarchy (Virgin - Mother - Crone) For those having difficult, busy lives right now, my thoughts are with you and I send positive energy in your direction. For those who are experiencing the loss of a loved one, I send love and warmth and will ask the Goddess to ease their transition. Anyone? All-Star Concert to Benefit A Place Called Home Tuesday, February 7 at Gibson Amphitheatre at Universal CityWalk Guitar Legend Les Paul With Merle Haggard, Alison Krauss, Steve Lukather, Joe Perry, Joe Satriani, Neal Schon, Shayna Steele, Switchfoot, and Edgar Winter Presented by In Touch Entertainment and Centerline Entertainment LOS ANGELES, Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- On Tuesday, February 7 at 8:15pm, one of the world's greatest gatherings of guitarists will take the Gibson Amphitheatre stage at Universal CityWalk for LES PAUL & FRIENDS: 90th BIRTHDAY SALUTE. The star-studded celebration, benefiting A Place Called Home, is produced by In Touch Entertainment and Centerline Entertainment and presented by Gibson Guitar. Tickets, priced from $42.50 to $104.50, go on sale Friday, January 27 at 1:00 PM PST. Guitar legend Les Paul, celebrating two Grammy nominations in his 90th year, will share the Gibson Amphitheatre stage with some of music's finest performers. Les Paul & Friends: 90th Birthday Salute, an all-star concert to benefit A Place Called Home, shares the collaborative spirit of Paul's 2005 album, Les Paul & Friends: American Made World Played, released in August by Capitol/EMI Music Catalog Marketing. Paul's first new release since Chester and Lester, his 1978 Grammy-winning collaboration with Chet Atkins, Les Paul & Friends marked Paul's first return to Billboard's Albums chart in 50 years, while also setting a new record for Paul as the eldest living artist to ever enjoy a Top 200 chart debut. Songs from the album have received two Grammy nominations in the Rock and Pop categories, making Paul the eldest living nominee ever in those fields. Les Paul, the father of the electric guitar, was born June 9, 1915, in Waukesha, WI. The five-time Grammy Award winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is the inventor of the solid body electric guitar and the pioneer of multi-track recording, the use of reverb and other now-standard recording techniques. Paul is being honored throughout his 90th year with an array of new product releases, honors and awards fit for the father of the electric guitar. In addition to Les Paul & Friends: American Made World Played, Capitol/EMI released Les Paul with Mary Ford: The Best of The Capitol Masters (90th Birthday Edition), a collection of Paul's finest Capitol recordings, with new artwork, bonus tracks and a package essay written by Paul himself. Last May, Paul was inducted into the National Inventors' Hall Of Fame at the Hall's Akron, OH headquarters. On June 9, the evening of Paul's 90th birthday, he was honored with the Songwriters' Hall Of Fame Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award. On June 19, an all-star group of guitarists took the Carnegie Hall stage for "All For Paul: Les Paul's 90th Birthday Salute," a star-studded celebration presented by Gibson Guitar at the JVC Jazz Festival -- New York. In addition, two new Les Paul books have been released: The Les Paul Legacy by Rob Lawrence (Hal Leonard Publishing) and Les Paul In His Own Words, a limited edition autobiography with each numbered copy signed by Paul (Russ Cochran Publishing). Guitarists around the world favor Les Paul's signature line of Gibson guitars, which debuted in 1952. (http://www.lespaulonline.com) The Les Paul & Friends all-star celebration features: Merle Haggard, arguably the world's greatest living country music singer and undeniably the greatest living country music songwriter, has been writing, recording and performing for over forty years. He's charted over forty number-one country hits. While considered the most truly "country" of country artists, there has always been a strong influence of blues and especially jazz music in the sound of Haggard and his virtuoso group the Strangers. Few bodies of recorded work have aged as well as his. 2004 saw Haggard reunite with his old label Capitol; his first release for the label is Unforgettable, a collection of standards. Haggard completed a tour this past year with Bob Dylan. Alison Krauss, at the age of 33, has achieved more career milestones than most people do in their lifetime. Her first album was released when she was 16. She has released ten studio albums, all on Rounder Records, with her long time band of highly acclaimed musicians, Union Station. Their most recent release is Lonely Runs Both Ways, which has already been certified Gold by the RIAA, with their two-disc recording Live and their two-disc Live DVD being certified Platinum. To date, she has earned 17 Grammy Awards and multiple Country Music Association Awards, International Bluegrass Music Awards and countless others. Her album releases have been critical and commercial successes, with multiple RIAA platinum and gold certified records and more than a combined 7 million albums sold. Steve Lukather rose to fame as guitarist, vocalist and a songwriter with the chart topping, Grammy Award winning band Toto. He branched out with a solo career, recording four albums, and collaborated with Larry Carlton for the Grammy Award winning live album "No Substitutions." Along with Kiss' Ace Frehley, Aerosmith's Joe Perry was responsible for inspiring thousands of teenagers to pick up guitars and start rocking n' rolling in the 1970's and beyond. Born September 10, 1950 in Lawrence, MA, Perry got his first taste of rock n' roll at the ripe old age of 6, when neighbors turned him on to such early rock nuggets as "Rock Around the Clock," "Tutti Frutti," etc. Infatuated by the likes of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones in the 60's, Perry picked up the guitar during his teenaged years, and started jamming along with such British blues rockers as The Yardbirds (Having A Rave Up with the Yardbirds) and John Mayall (Bluesbreakers), which would serve as the basis for his tough n' rough blues licks that would later put Aerosmith over the top. Along with teaching some of the top rock guitar players of the '80s and '90s, Joe Satriani is one of the most technically accomplished and widely respected guitarists to emerge in recent times. His 1987 album Surfing With the Alien garnered him national acclaim as the burnin'est superguitar axeman of his generation. Since then Satriani has continued to release albums of intricately constructed virtuoso guitar rock, almost all of it instrumental. By the time he was 15, Neal Schon was traveling the world with Santana. In 1973, he left the band to join Gregg Rolie in what would become the mega-group Journey and is now the only original member of the band that has been on every album. In addition to Journey, which celebrates a new album, "Generations," and hits the road on June 26 for the 30th Anniversary tour, Schon has maintained a solo career that produced the Grammy nominated album "Voice" and his latest solo offering, "i on U," as well as "WorldPlay" with his band Soul SirkUs. Shayna Steele was an original cast member of the Broadway musical RENT and has also performed in the Broadway musicals JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR and HAIRSPRAY. She appeared on Moby's recent album HOTEL, and will be appearing in a Steve Buscemi-directed episode of HBO's "The Sopranos" this spring. Keyboardist Edgar Winter has been thrilling audiences and garnering critical acclaim throughout his 35-five year career with such hits as "Frankenstein" and "Free Ride" with The Edgar Winter Group. He has more than 20 albums and numerous collaborations to his credit in addition to film, television projects and live performances where he continues to display his cutting edge style. Larry Carlton once said, "There are a lot of great bass players in this world, but there is one, and only one Abraham Laboriel." Originally a classically trained guitarist, Abraham infused his flamenco style on the bass guitar when he made the transition to four strings at the Berklee School of Music. Since the day that the late Henry Mancini encouraged him to come to Los Angeles, Abe has played on over 3000(!) recordings and soundtracks, prompting Guitar Player to succinctly peg him as "...the most widely used session bassist of our time." You have undoubtedly heard the diversity of his contributions to recordings by music's creme de la creme including: Stevie Wonder, Robbie Robertson, Joe Zawinul, George Benson, Barbara Streisand, Al Jarreau, Dave & Don Gruisin, Elton John, Joe Sample, Dori Caymmi, Quincy Jones, Justo Almario and Michael Jackson to name a few. He was also a founding member of the internationally acclaimed fusion groups Friendship and Koinonia. Kenny Aronoff is one of the most in-demand and influential drummers in rock music. He has worked with many of the world's top artists including The Rolling Stones, The Smashing Pumpkins, John Mellencamp, Alanis Morissette, Bob Seger, Melissa Etheridge, Jon Bon Jovi, Elton John, Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart, Michelle Branch, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Bonnie Raitt, John Fogerty, Joe Cocker, Mick Jagger, Alice Cooper, Meat Loaf, Avril Lavigne and many others. With a style of playing that combines power and finesse, Kenny was named the #1 Pop/Rock Drummer and the #1 Studio Drummer for five consecutive years by the readers of Modern Drummer Magazine, and in addition has played on over 30 Grammy-nominated recordings. Vinnie Colaiuta is regarded as one of the most influential drummers of all time; in fact, Modern Drummer has been quoted as saying that he is "the greatest drummer of our time." Vinnie emerged in the late 1970's, and took the world by storm. He spent his formative years backing up some of the most demanding bandleaders, Frank Zappa, and Gino Vannelli. Vinnie had a knack for difficult time signatures, and rhythmic invention, making him a perfect match for such groups. His unique polyrhythmic style was garnished while attending Berklee and studying under Gary Chaffee. Being a preferred session player had its perks as well, earning him respect from such diverse artists as Sting, Barbra Streisand, Joni Mitchell, Al Kooper, Don Henley, and a plethora of others. During the 80's Vinnie was one of the most sought after session players, recording literally hundreds of albums with the likes of Madonna, Herbie Hancock, Michael Jackson, B.B. King, Ray Charles and Billy Joel to name a few. Also joining Les Paul for the celebration are long-time Les Paul Trio band members John Colliani, piano; Lou Pallo, guitar; and Nicky Parrott, bass. Proceeds from the concert will benefit A Place Called Home (http://www.apch.org). A Place Called Home has been accomplishing its mission for the past 15 years, providing at-risk youth with a secure, positive family environment where they can regain hope and belief, earn trust and self respect and learn skills to lead a productive lifestyle through learning. There may be another Living Room in the city, but I don't think so. I am so excited I can barely stand it! Everyday I get so amped up to meet you all. There's so much in these digests that I want to reference in my posts, but I'd be writing a book, so now I can say my thoughts to most of you in person. YAY!!! I thought the Brokeback Mountain posts were awesome. I hope W gets to read that letter, because it was perfectly written. I saw the movie last Sunday and was blown away. Although I love pretty much all of Ang Lee's films so that wasn't a surprise. I want to go to Wyoming so much now. My boyfriend, a mountain climber and lover of National parks, is thrilled. The city girl wanting to go camping in the woods!! ; - ) I also want to buy the soundtrack. My lordy those songs were so incredibly beautiful. My thoughts on Joni not being there are simple: it bums me out that she isn't, but in no way did that make me want to not see the show. I am going to hear other talented people perform her music, musicians who obviously share our love for her as an artist. Plus, I still get to see all of you wonderful people. I just hope that I still someday get the opportunity to either meet her and sing for her, or see her perform live. I have a list of artists to see before I die or they die. Some I have gotten to see : 1. Earth, Wind, and Fire (saw them with Chicago - amazing!) 2. Steely Dan (saw them, can't wait to see them again in a better venue) 3. Gloria Estefan (her spanish album "Mi Tierra" speaks deeply to me as a cuban woman) 4. Roger Waters (i have yet to hear a song from him I dislike, like Joni) 5. Joni (duh!) Also, in reference to the tribute concert, I don't know if any of you know La India but she is one of the top salsa singers. She had a huge hit a number of years past with Marc Anthony called "Vivir Lo Nuestro" which means To Live Ours (the translation stinks). here's her amazon page: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/102-0337313-7835344?url=index%3Dmusic&search-type=quick-search&field-keywords=La+India check her out. Now, my only problem is trying to figure out what to wear for the concert. Is everyone getting pretty dressed up? I mean, I'm probably not wearing jeans, but I don't want to be uncomfortable. If you can include my name to the (guest)list to Seppi's I would truly appreciate it otherwise I can call them on Monday like you suggested. About a minute ago I finally booked a flight to Laguardia from RDU. A very cool JoniLista (hi Em!!) gave me the opportunity to watch the Tribute to see, gawk, rhapsodize at my favorite artists performing at the said event. That and also meet the cooler-than-cool JMDLers some of which will perform after the Tribute. Plus who knows, Joni might just be there (to see her wave at us would be theprice of admission). The mix of getting the right flight and NY airport to land can be a daunting task. But also exciting. And plane fares are pricey for this poor grad student (Some airlines charge the RDU-LGA flight much more than the trip to Germany or Ethiopia). Anyone arriving at Laguardia on Wednesday around 2pm too and who wants to go with me to the concert area? I have to give myself plenty of time to find my way around. Since it was only recently that I realized I can attend the Tribute, I was wondering if someone can re-post the where and when of informal gatherings before the concert? Otherwise I can just go to Carnegie around 7:30. Someone in the List recently asked something about attire to the concert and I was wondering the same thing too. Is there a dress requirement? A Carnegie Hall newbie wants to know. They will be putting an area of 50 aside for us. when you make your reservation, please mention that you're with the joni mitchell discussion list gathering. seppi's' phone number is 212.708.7444. please try to call by Monday, I'm going to check in with Nadia on Tuesday to see how many people made reservations. the point is, we don't want to go over there and find we don't have enough room, but they don't want to turn people away because they're holding room for members of our party that might not show. i spoke with the music for youth organization, and they're adamant that the show will come down before 11:00 pm, for union reasons. i'm so excited about this whole evening. seppi's is at 123 west 56th street, just around the corner from carnegie patrick leader p.s. Karen and Jahida are included in my reservation.
