I completely understand anyone being dismayed at joining a list like this and seeing all this bile flying around. Personally, I'd have replied along the lines of "Jeez, is it always like this? Well, here's why I love Joni Mitchell's music..." rather than storming off in a huff with this: << I encounter too many ignorant conversations as it is. Some of you may know; the ones lacking wisdom, knowledge, logic, or experience needed to have intelligent, reasonable dialogue. I'm out. >> And when the person hasn't made any other contribution to the list, it's hard to resist responding with sarcasm or indifference. Someone we didn't know was here has decided to go. You don't miss what you never >knew you had. > My brother, Azeem, who I deeply respect and can't recall ever disagreeing with, the word "sanctimonious" is way to strong and I will not accept it as expressing what I feel, while it expresses what you feel. We should be very open to how new eyes see us. There is no ladder of seniority one must climb before one's observations are valid, and I am bothered by the hostility in many posts to the perspective that Cathy has as if because she is not one of us that she should show us the proper respect we think we deserve. Especially as this derives from Mack's original expression of his feelings. I mean, someone posted that if Joni hit them with a shovel; they would be in awe and what is that but the very opposite of any sense of discernment and values. I wouldn't accept that from God and I don't accept that from Joni and she is not beyond criticism and this list is for all to post. The observations of a newcomer are as valid as anyone's and perhaps more so because they see things with a new perspective. I think we have failed to embrace someone who has called us on our failures. The reactions to Mack were hostile and the reactions to Cathy have been hostile and that disturbs me greatly. We have not embraced, we have judged. Hell us those of us who have been a long time have argued and feuded and disagreed and after all these years us old timers can dish it out and not welcome it when dished back. There are very few of us - and certainly not me - innocent of never lashing out or issuing a strong opinion which has stung others. I sure as hell am guilty. Mack did not deserve to be raked over the coals - in the range of reactions from 1 to 100 that a community can tolerate, his were well within that range and so are Cathy's views. If either one of them quit because their views were found so unacceptable it would be a loss to all of us, whether we agree or not. If Cathy or Mack felt that the list as a whole was sanctimonious to them, I'd understand why. I have received a whole slew of emails through the years, on list and offlist, pointing out my faults and lack of community. Often times those emails have been correct and I needed the perspectives of others to see through other eyes how I was coming across as a poster. We need that as a list too. Cathy has served us a needed refresher and show us perhaps what we did not want to see. I welcome Cathy. As a whole, we have not treated her well. Even if many feel she was wrong, she has not been affirmed as having a valid perspective but judged as not being able to have one. Cathy, rock on. Stay with us.
