I am looking forward to seeing Brokeback Mountain when it is released in Sydney on January 26. I just know I am going to weep like a baby. Now, even more so because I will be thinking of your life experiences too. Many Australians will relate closely to this story. Our outback is very similar to the Mid-West of the United States. There are many young men living a life of fear out there in a very redneck society. This may be the reason Heath Ledger decided to do this movie. He would know of the plight of young gay men in the outback and the horrible rate of suicide out there. I have been brought up in a privileged environment and never had to suffer the pain of living a double life. Many years ago, when I was at university, I met a guy on the internet who lived in Wyoming. He was a true cowboy, living on a ranch and stuck in a marriage he couldn't get out of. He was miserable and took a great risk by even chatting to me. He was so desperate to live a life of truth and freedom but couldn't find a way out. It broke my heart. Then, as the song goes, "One day he just disappeared". I never found out what happened to him. Of course, this is the reason, Two Grey Rooms is so heart wrenching to me. To never be able to reveal your love to the only person who matters to you or to suppress your feelings and your identity is the saddest life to live. For Fundamentalist Christians to impose their ideals on others and create an atmosphere of bigotry and fear for others in their community is selfish and tantamount to emotional terrorism. You need to be in a more caring and accepting environment. Don't let it stifle you. Since I saw the movie (and loved it, by the way) the same weekend that I saw the Producers, I couldn't help but compare the two. After I saw The Producers, I wondered why I had never heard anything about the portrayal of gay people in this movie. I'm talking about the scene with all the extreme stereotypes of gay men (and one very butch-flannel-shirt-wearing lesbian.) While I thought it was funny to a point, I have to admit it made me squirm in my chair. Do we just pass this off as "all in fun," or is it a bad thing to encourage laughter at the silly, prancing queens (and manly lesbians)? Just wondered what people thought about this... The play really bolstered that character and threw him into the light. I think the song, the character, etc are all examples of an older school of comedy where gay people were mainly the equivalent to the jolly black servant of the golden age of hollywood and that their sole purpose in the film was to illicit laughter or to be colorful stock characters. I recall Neil Tennant of The Pet Shop Boys saying to HX or Next magazine in New York back in 2002 that he was not impressed with the gay characters or songs in The Producers...that they were exactly as described above and that offended him. I wasn't offended, though I do think that nowadays showcasing gays or lesbians in that manner is old hat and makes me squirm as well.
