Very excited to see that you're from Raleigh - I get back that way a couple times a year, and it's where my love for Joni was cultivated, both from Lisa Kline demanding that I put down my macho rock records long enough to listen to Hejira, and also thanks to Jolee at WQDR, now a country station but then an AOR station...she would ALWAYS play a Joni track on her show, and when DJRD came out she practically played it all. And you're right - if you've been here since November you know that things can get bizarre, so hop in and help keep things stirred up. Just remember to adjust your subject line and add an NJC when you go No Joni and all will be cool. Hopefully I'll see you up in NYC. Hey Listers, Michael Paz and I have been hatching a plan to have our own mini-Fest at a venue in the city the day after the Carnegie show. I have a tentative agreement with the booker at Rockwood Music Hall, a great lower east side listening room with a really nice parlor grand piano, to host us from 11 pm to 1 am on Thursday 2/2. This would be a benefit for the Katrina's Piano Fund for which Michael has been working. The room is a no-cover, pass-the-bucket kind of place. In terms of keeping the owners happy, much purchasing of drinks will be required. All bucket proceeds will go to Michael, who will then pass them to the Katrina's Piano Fund. I am trying to gauge how many of you would be likely to attend. Those of you who are advanced amateur or professional musicians are encouraged to perform. Please contact me OFF LIST at kay@kayashley.com as soon as humanly possible to let me know if you will be an audience member and/or if you would like to be a performer! :-) Thanks!! When my husband, er I mean Santa, brought it to the frame shop, another customer asked who it was a picture of. He told her it was Joni Mitchell and when the customer said she didn't know who Joni was he said, "She wrote 'Both Sides Now'". To which she replied, 'Oh, I love that song!' Hi Joni-folk, I've just received what I think is an exciting and rare offer to have our JMDL pre-Tribute reception at the Citigroup Cafe in Carnegie Hall, starting at 6:00 p.m.!! There are a few nominal fees involved, but only a total of $482.50 for the royal, separate entrance, private area treatment is a steal. Gail and I will pay the first $200 as a small token of our appreciation to the list for all the support during her recent surgery. I would be thrilled with other sponsors, or we might have to ask a small entrance fee, which I hope won't be necessary for administrative purposes. I've also asked that our group be able to order off the standard menu, with separate checks, rather than their catered fare. The complete offer from Carnegie Hall is below. Please let me hear from you if you have ideas, resources or sponsorships. I think this will be special. We could have music, maybe. Maybe Joni and others will visit prior to the VIP reception. JMDL people going to the VIP event would have 30 min to mingle with us beforehand. Please let me know if there is interest in this, as I'm nervous about pursuing it without full JMDL Tribute attender support. Thanks! The offer: Julius b B After some discussions here amongst the Carnegie Hall folks we have come up with. B 1. Your group may have the Citigroup CafC) as a private event space from 6:00pm b 7:00pm. B Your guests would enter through the 154 West 57th Street entrance and walk straight ahead in to the CafC). At 7:00pm the space would open to the general public but your group could stay and enjoy the space along with others coming in. B The cafC) does connect directly into Stern Auditorium so it would be very easy to move to the concert space for the 8:00pm show time.B We could do a cash bar for your group or bar on consumption which we could charge to a credit card of your choice. We could also provide any food or beverage you may need. B I have attached a basic menu package for review.B The only house fees to have this space is $250 for a security guard, $75.00 for an usher to tear your guests tickets and $157.50 for the bartender. Carnegie Hall has waived the $780.00 room rental fee for this space for your group. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jan 2006 15:07:30 -0600 From: "Donna Binkley" Subject: Re: carnegie, park central., njc Me too! That's two of us. Kay, I got your call, sorry I haven't called you back yet! I will before I land in nyc on 1/27 (I'm working a conference all week, so won't have tons of time for hanging out, sadly). I'm working on Wednesday, and won't likely be done until 5 or so. One of my favorite bars is across the street from Carnegie and my hotel, it's called PJ Carneys. I think my sis and I will have a drink there if anyone wants to find us. Can someone email me the details of the pre-gathering at *someone's/that guys* house??? Sorry for not paying better attention. I'm swamped at work right now. Forgive me! I wish everyone Godspeed. Please post reports ASAP afterwards. I regret immeasurably not being able to attend. Second, today on my way home from work, I heard a Terry Gross interview on NPR's Fresh Air with Steve Coogan about his new movie, "Tristam Shandy, A Cock and Bull Story". Immediately after tuning in they played an audio clip from the movie and it is about JONI. First, Big Yellow Taxi plays and then this Tristam character does an analysis of what his interpretation of the lyrics should mean. Satire. Pretty ironic tha withhin seconds of tuning in, Jon's singing hit me. Great feeling. It is based on a novel, so not sure if the same content is in it, Smurph!! We got it! We're confirmed for Thursday 2/2 from 11pm to 1am or later. Exciting news: among the confirmed performers are Joy Askew (of Joni's Jazz/Summer Stage fame) and fellow Listas David Lahm and Bryan Thomas!! Paz and I need to get a better idea of JMDL performers -- do you wanna play? Let me know by writing to me off list at: kay@kayashley.com Also, Paz suggested a rehearsal on Tuesday 1/31. Let's have a show of hands: are you a JMDLer who wants to perform and would you benefit from a rehearsal the night before the Carnegie show? If there are enough of you who'll be in town and will be game, we'll rent some rehearsal space at a mid-town location TBD. If an accompanist is required for rehearsal and performance, we'll work it out. The performance slots are going to be short: probably only 2 songs apiece. So please list what you want to perform, and dig deep into the repertoire - -- just among my NYC singer-songwriter colleagues, there are already 3 peeps who wanna sing "People's Parties" -- and you know, AH wanna sang that wun... ;-D LOL but seriously, Paz and I will be arranging the set list, etc., according to what songs are featured, and we want to avoid duplication since it's only a 2 hour show. Contact me and/or Paz off-list with any questions, and I'll see ya'll soon! I know absolutely nothing about Furry, but if he was anything like Pat Robertson, those three things would be enough to send anyone of that ilk over the edge into non-Jesus-like words and deeds." I realize that this was not really about Furry, but I had not heard that Joni was with Allan Ginsberg until now. Still, taking you at your word (what a fool I am) about not knowing anything about Furry Lewis, I would guess that he was not anything like Pat Robertson. That would be some match-up; Ginsberg-Robertson, at - say - Carnegie Hall. Better than Ali-Frazier in Manila. "Also, I can sorta understand Furry's resentment at being visited by a coked-up limoload of "beautiful people," one of whom eventually wrote an unflattering song that mentioned his false teeth and leg. The song has always made me a little uncomfortable in that Furry seems to be treated a bit like a sideshow curiosity. Maybe Joni is totally innocent of any 'wrongdoing' -- whatever that means -- but hers is a perspective Bonnie Raitt (for one) never would have taken, and this is a song Bonnie never would have written. " I also had not heard that there was a "limoload". I thought Joni was supposedly driving back alone (which would have meant the limo may have comprised poetic license for effect - or maybe not, I suppose). I understand your lack of comfort with the song, and agree with the sideshow curiosity element you sensed, since the song was as much about the condition of Beale Street as about the condition of Furry - both on their last legs (no pun intended). However, the scene has a powerful ring of truth to it for me - I think it is a very strong work of art with respect to both the depiction of the street and of the man. Yes, one could argue that Joni was insensitive to Furry's feelings - but I bet it was an honest and fair portrayal. Sometimes one reaps what one sows. Joni was pretty adamant that she had treated him nicely and respectfully, and seemed upset by his antisocial response. Just maybe she wasn't coked up that day. Actually, I think there is a good deal of sympathy in her portrayal - one could argue that it was closer to pity, but again, there is that fine line that Joni is willing to risk for the sake of her art. Not much of Joni's work is really comfortable, IMO. I love that song. And you're right - Bonnie Raitt would never have written it. (Maybe she's too nice). Nor (however, IMO) could she have. I saw Bonnie a month or two ago (at the Beacon). She was dynamite, her band was truly first rate, and the sound was excellent. One of the best concerts I have been to, really. But she's no Joni Mitchell as a songwriter. Then again, who is ?
