I think she is a very serious writer but like all such she is extraordinarily capable of setting up and batting away a good funny line both to drive home a point and for some light relief. There are obvious examples like pissing the tequila anaconda and the woman in "raised on robbery" sitting on her groceries. But I've been reading the messages about song for Sharon because it is still one of my favourites and one of the things I love is the self contained little stories often with a punchline in every verse. "All I really want to do right now is find another lover"; ".She lit a candle for my love-luck and 18 bucks went up in smoke". OK, perhaps jokes is the wrong word but I smile, sometimes laugh out loud when I hear these - thought-provoking AND funny, imo -references and whenever anyone says that Joni is one of the few writers to make them cry I always say "yes, and laugh!" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Jan 2006 06:35:31 -0800 (PST) From: Bob Muller Subject: re: Pre and Post tribute plans NJC Well, if I had to bet I would bet money that it was a Guiness - I think that's what I was drinking as well, but since at that moment it was about 4AM 'body clock' time, my memories may not be that reliable. I always pictured Joni's face on this really paranoid deer rampantly charging across a snowy field. Then there was a list years back about Joni having dirty contations in her songs and one person sarcastically suggested that, "boxcars are banging in the yard" was dirty. So, from now on all I can picture are these Gumby-like trains with big eggy salacious eyes dry-humping one another when I hear that line. It has further endeared the song to me for sure. Blair NP: King of The Mountain by Kate Bush ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Jan 2006 01:15:51 EST From: Bobsart48@aol.com Subject: Re: tribute concert and "the noble cause" This concert seems to have gotten the juices flowing a bit on the old list, eh ? Anyway, it's got me energized a bit. I just wanted to send out a little warning to Joni and whoever will be in charge of the sound at Carnegie Hall for the concert. It's a dangerous place for electric music. A couple of years ago, I posted about an Emmy Lou Harris concert I went to there, which was pretty much ruined by the acoustics. She brought her band (Spyboy) and had the McGarrigles (sp?) there too. As NY Times critic (and big Joni fan, as all of you know) Stephen Holden reported in his review, what should have been a triumphant and fitting exclamation point to her career was badly compromised by the fickle acoustics of Carnegie Hall with respect to non-acoustic music (the couple of songs she played acoustic and alone were the only ones that sounded good - though the concert sounded fine when mixed, cleaned up and played back on WFUV, so the musicianship was fine). So, if Larry Klein and her "team" (house band, et al) are going to be involved in this one again, I would caution them to take extra time preparing and - with respect to the non-acoustic accompaniment - err in direction of not miking the drums, keeping the electric bass at a low volume, and keeping the instruments essentially flat (i.e., little if any reverb like effects). The hall will take care of the rest. Testing testing testing.- but how do you do it with the place empty ? That said, I hope a decent portion of the concert will be acoustic. Do you think there'll be an orchestra for the finale ? If so, that would sound so great - CH is built for that. Another thought - this event is for music education. Not sure if anyone heard this "news", but sometime last year Yale's college of music received what I think is by far the largest donation ever for a music institute - $500 million. All future students admitted to the program (I assume we are talking graduate school, here, but I suspect this may extend downward) will go tuition free for starters. But even at 5% per year (treasury yields plus a hair), the annual income of $25 million can fund quite the program. And, Yale's endowment guy is a legend among legends - he'll do 2 or 3 times that well if historical performance holds up. Maybe Joni should hitch her wagon up to Yale's music school, and try to come up with some "win/win" activities that would benefit her noble cause, with something in it for Yale too. You know, like super pop concerts for fundraisers, etc. I mean, if Bono can do it for his cause, surely Joni can persuade those bleeding hearts at the university to help put up or shut up.......... :-). If she needs an ombudsman to get in touch with President Levin, I'm sure my daughter would be willing to introduce him to another in the wide wide world of noble causes..... and to a Companion of the Order of Merit, at that !!!!! I think Joni should go for it. Looking forward to seeing you all again.
