But there's one serious, serious gap in my live concert memory book that I'd love to fill: Joni Mitchell. Like most of the other singer-musicians that move me deeply, she's a passion from my high school and college years, which is when her lovely, brilliant albums and songs started breaking the waves and her image exactly suited the times. I loved her look--her long, straight blond hair and direct gaze. And I love her stuff, not just because she's a compelling singer and a daring composer--someone as capable of collaborating with jazz maverick Charles Mingus (at his request) as well as The Band, Tom Petty or Willie Nelson--but because she's such a wonderful writer. In her early folk and love songs ("Marcie," "Both Sides Now"), she could cut right to the bone, make it pretty but diamond-hard. She could go rhapsodic, bluesy or giddily ironic ("paved paradise, put up a parking lot!"). Or mix it all up. No one was a more daring experimenter. And nothing summed up the true (if perhaps illusory) '60s spirit better than her "Woodstock." I'd just like to watch her sing and play for a few hours--to remember what it was like and then give her some loud, deserved applause. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Jan 2006 14:48:50 -0800 (PST) From: Bob Muller Subject: Re: 'Golden Reggie'? Hi Karen, First. please allow me to say that I LOVE your questions! Like other have said, "Golden Reggie" is a specific person, obviously Joni and Sharon (Bell) know him but we don't, and that's OK - what Joni tells us about him tells us all that we need to know. I think it's part of a pattern with Song For Sharon in that the song deals in specifics. Unlike BSN, which deals in generalities, universalities. We can immediately put ourselves into it. SFS, on the other hand, is a litany of specific recollections about Joni and her relationship/history with Sharon. Over and over again, there are SPECIFIC references: Staten Island Bleecker Street Dora Betsy Maidstone Reggie Wollman Rink The brilliance of the song is that we can STILL relate to the imagery that Joni's writing about, even though it's decidedly pointed at someone else. While dealing in specifics (or maybe because she does) she touches upon big themes that we all deal with; ambition, love, death, family, etc. Blew me away when I first heard it and it still does today. Probing the Brokeback Syndrome Can a straight man fall in love with another man? By RYAN LEE Friday, January 13, 2006 DESPITE HEATH LEDGERS critically acclaimed acting in Brokeback Mountain, its not entirely convincing when his character, Ennis del Mar, defiantly insists, You know, I aint queer. What makes the statement difficult for some audiences to accept at face value is that Ennis says it right after he and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) engage in decidedly queer sex. Movie critics and the mediagay and mainstreamare largely ignoring Ennis protestations, universally classifying Brokeback as the gay cowboy movie. Both lead actors drew the ire of some gay moviegoers and critics by insisting in interviews that their characters arent gay. I approached the story believing that these are actually two straight guys who fall in love, Gyllenhaal says in a recent Details magazine story. These are two straight guys who develop this love, this bond. Ledger attempts a similar argument in an interview in Time magazine. I dont think Ennis could be labeled as gay. Without Jack Twist, I dont know that he ever would have come out, Ledger tells the magazine. I think the whole point was that it was two souls that fell in love with each other. So can a straight man really fall in love with another man, or are love and sex inextricably tied to sexual orientation? Does Brokeback Syndrome, at least as Ledger and Gyllenhaal tell it, occur in nature? Eric Marcus, the gay author of Is It A Choice? Answers to the Most Frequently Asked Questions About Gay & Lesbian People, dismisses talk of Ennis and Jack being anything but gay as box office-influenced political correctness intended to steer straight audiences to the film. Its absolutely a universal love storya love story about two gay men, Marcus says. My vote is that Jack and Ennis are gay, and there was never any doubt in my mind. But how can Jack and Ennis be gay when their sexual and romantic lives included wives, girlfriends and children? It gets complicated when we have to assign labels to something that is often more complicated than the label presents, , Marcus says. [But] in terms of what they desired, it seems pretty clear that what they desired was each other. Even the people responsible for bringing Brokeback to the screen dont all agree with Ledger and Gyllenhaal. Director Ang Lee told this publication that the bond between Jack and Ennis constitutes a gay relationship. Producer James Schamus responds to Gyllenhaals statement in Details with surprise. Did he really say that? Schamus asks in the magazine. Well, I suppose movies can be Rorschach tests for all of us, but damn if these characters arent gay to me. You can tell that both of these issues are close to his heart. I watched a movie on PBS called "Yesterday" and was reduced to complete tears especially the first time I watched it. It was a story of a young South African wife and mother who contracted AIDS from her husband who worked in the mines of Johnannesburg. Her name was "Yesterday" and she had a five or six year old daughter by the name of "Beauty". The daughter reminded me so much of my daughter at the same age and I was beside myself with grief over this fictional character and her loss. The second time I watched it a panel came on afterwards and someone representing Bill Clinton's AIDS foundation spoke on how accurate the movie was on the real conditions of medical attention in South Africa. I know it has forever changed my life. I urge everyone to try to catch it on TV whenever you can. Julius, thank you so much for sharing this article! Sherelle Julius wrote: Way to go, Bill! This is huge. Think of all the lives that will be saved! - - -Julius From today's New York Times: January 12, 2006 Clinton in Deal to Cut AIDS Treatment Costs By DONALD G. McNEIL Jr. Former President Bill Clinton plans to announce today that his foundation has negotiated lower prices on AIDS tests and on two important AIDS drugs. Four companies, from the United States, India and China, will offer rapid H.I.V. tests for 49 cents to 65 cents, which will reduce the typical cost of a test in poor countries by half, Mr. Clinton said in a written statement. Another four companies - three from India and one from South Africa - will make the antiretroviral drug efavirenz for as little as $240 per patient per year. One of the Indian companies, Cipla, will also make the antiretroviral abacavir for $447. The most common three-drug combination pill for H.I.V. now costs $136 per year, so the new drugs, even at steep discounts from the thousands of dollars they cost in the West, can easily triple the cost of therapy. But as patients become resistant to their first-line drugs, doctors must have new options. The William J. Clinton Presidential Foundation acts as a broker, meeting with the health ministries of about 50 poor countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America and with drug makers. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Jan 2006 03:43:15 +0000 From: "Sherelle Smith" Subject: RE: suggested - plus earlier preshow suggestion Hi Patrick, I forgot to put myself on the NE Jonilist so I missed this! Check the menu out at www.ninostuscany.com; there's also a piano player although it may be too early for his shift. It's a tad on the pricy side but not really crazy. As she and her fellow travelers hiked in the desert, Regina would make up little songs and melodies to fill the time. I noticed that some kids would always try to hike next to me and ask me to sing particular songs that I had made up, she recalls. So I started trying to remember them. By the end of the trip, all these kids were telling me that I had to write songs! It had never occurred to me, she continues. To me, the mentality was you sit at the piano and play Bach or Mozart or Chopin. You didnt ever improvise, so the idea of writing my own music was an intimidating one. The way I got into music was totally backwards, she says. Id write a song and someone would tell me, That sounds like Joni Mitchell,' and I'd go, Who?'
