This is huge. Think of all the lives that will be saved! - -Julius From today's New York Times: January 12, 2006 Clinton in Deal to Cut AIDS Treatment Costs By DONALD G. McNEIL Jr. Former President Bill Clinton plans to announce today that his foundation has negotiated lower prices on AIDS tests and on two important AIDS drugs. Four companies, from the United States, India and China, will offer rapid H.I.V. tests for 49 cents to 65 cents, which will reduce the typical cost of a test in poor countries by half, Mr. Clinton said in a written statement. Another four companies - three from India and one from South Africa - will make the antiretroviral drug efavirenz for as little as $240 per patient per year. One of the Indian companies, Cipla, will also make the antiretroviral abacavir for $447. The most common three-drug combination pill for H.I.V. now costs $136 per year, so the new drugs, even at steep discounts from the thousands of dollars they cost in the West, can easily triple the cost of therapy. But as patients become resistant to their first-line drugs, doctors must have new options. The William J. Clinton Presidential Foundation acts as a broker, meeting with the health ministries of about 50 poor countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America and with drug makers. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Jan 2006 12:05:16 +0100 From: Emiliano Subject: Re: njc, a song for today Hi, Patti! On board will be many fine grains from the comet's tail, as well as a smattering of interstellar dust grains from nearby recent supernovae. Finding these grains will be tricky, requiring tens of thousands of hours of searching through photos of aerogel. In the old days, this would make for someone's dissertation, but with the internet, a new option is available: In a new project called Stardust@home, University of California, Berkeley, researchers will invite Internet users to help them search for a few dozen submicroscopic grains of interstellar dust captured by NASA's Stardust spacecraft and due to return to Earth [this weekend]. ..."Twenty or 30 years ago, we would have hired a small army of microscopists who would be hunched over microscopes focusing up and down through the aerogel looking for the tracks of these dust grains," said Westphal. "Instead, we developed an automated microscope to scan the aerogel and hope to use volunteers we have trained and tested to search for these tracks." ...If at least two of the four volunteers viewing each image report a track, that image will be fed to 100 more volunteers for verification. If at least 20 of these report a track, UC Berkeley undergraduates who are expert at spotting dust grain tracks will confirm the identification. Eventually, the grain will be extracted for analysis. Discoverers will get to name their dust grains. What a wonderful way to get people involved with space exploration (though I would have preferred something more Tito-esque by 2006). I think I will name my dust grain ... Can we all agree to meet there? At Citigroup Cafe? Let's just put it this way. . . . if we have time or interest to meet anywhere at Carnegie Hall before, during intermission or *immediately after the show we will meet at the Citigroup Cafe. Can some of you say "okay" or "sounds good" or something just so we know we are moving in the right direction? It doesn't mean you HAVE to be there. . it just means that if you want to meet up, this is the option. you may find you do not have the time. . . . OR you might be happy to find others. . Marianne >Hi Marianne, Rather than meeting in the lobby right before the show and during Intermission, I recommend designating the Citigroup Cafe inside the hall itself as the One meeting spot at those times. This from the Carnegie Hall website: Citigroup Cafe Before the Concert Enjoy the newly expanded light-fare menu, including gourmet sandwiches, desserts, espresso, cocktails, and champagne in our century-old bar. The Cafe opens one hour prior to concert time and is located off the Parquet level. Intermission The Citigroup Cafe is also a great place to visit during intermission, when coffee and dessert service is available. Pre-order before concert time, and your selection will be waiting for you at intermission. Sounds ideal to me. It's right outside the door near my seats, and Patti's and Sherelle's and Michael's and Bob's and many others down on the floor, stage left. - -Julius treegreen1@hotmail.com writes: >2.
